Every former player is invited to the reunion. One JV game makes you a Roseau alumni. I saw him this summer. He's not in top physical shape, but he's come a long way from the fat kid he was 3-4 years ago. He's not someone I'd call fat and out of shape anymore. About three years ago, TSN did an in-between periods special on Dustin when he played for the Prince George Cougars. It focused on how he was so talented, but he couldn't control his weight. The video had Dustin at a McDonalds chowing down about three big macs while his coach was saying that he was one of the most talented players he's seen, but probably won't make it to the NHL unless he gets his eating under control.
It's also likely the reason that despite consitent scoring, he wasn't able to hold a consistent spot on the Blackhawks roster until after the first month of this year.
I think Savard and the Blackhawks have finally come to the conclusion that Dustin is never going to be in shape and that a fat and out-of-shape Dustin is still better than many other players.
To call Dustin out of shape at this point in his life is just plain old silly like Billy. While he may never have washboard abs or win a Mr. Universe competition, He plays 18-22 minutes per game. The fact is....every coach and GM in the league expect players to be in top shape. Do you really think he eats like he did as a teenager? About 6 months ago, I witnessed him order Salmon and Vegetables at a restaurant, while every one else was ordering burgers and fries.
As far as Dustin not being able to hold a roster spot in the past..... He was a 20 year old kid in his first taste of the NHL and he wasnt' scoring much. His second stint didn't go as well as he had hoped, and his play was not that of what he is capable of. Now, at the OLD age of 22, he has figured what is his job is and is establishing himself in the upper echelon of the players in his draft class.
