If Breck, STA, and T-G opted up prior to this season, the A tourney would probably be:
Hermantown
Marshall
Lourdes
Apollo
EGF
Delano
Mahtomedi
Duluth Marshall
I don't see a 12-0 game in there, and maybe not even a 6-1 game, given Breck is better than Hermantown (according to seedings). No matter what the games would be more entertaining. Hermantown would be the favorite, but it wouldn't be insane to think that Lourdes or EGF could knock them off, not like it would be to think that any of them could beat STA.
I would love to see EGF upset STA, but I just can't see it happening.
I don't see a game in there worth watching.
Then don't. And leave us that want to watch alone.
You wouldn't watch either if your favorite team wasn't involved.

My team isn't involved and I watch every A game. You don't like A hockey fine, don't watch.
I have a buddy who is a huge NHL fan, and he can't fathom why anyone would want to watch HS hockey. Another buddy of mine
played for East in the epic Apple Valley game and even he can't get himself to watch HS hockey, but he will watch any NHL game on TV.
Competitive games are fun to watch, no matter the level.

Maybe you're on to something. I'm going to call KSTC and ask that they televise the U12 Girls state tourny.

Well, since you wouldn't watch it, then it probably isn't worth showing then, is it?
Do you live in North Korea and Kim Jong Un has decreed all citizens must watch the A tourney? Or did you lose your remote?

To use the oft quoted phrase from AA/private folks................"Haters gonna hate".

Fans possibly not interested in these 494 ring privates dominating the outstate small public teams. I'm not saying there's not great outstate teams, just not enough of them to ensure 4 good tournament pairings. Kind of hit and miss just waiting for a great game. Maybe one good semi and hopefully a good championship. I love it, but where is the fan support. Really disappointed in all the empty space.
While i am all in favor of STA moving up, and think they should have earlier...the most attended game in Class A history was last years seminfinal game against Breck (over 11,000). If you think there is apathy now... just wait until STA opts us and you will see a Hermantown/EGF final next year in front of 2500.
How many people were at the Hermantown/Thief River Falls semifinal last year? I'm assuming the 11,000 number was the attendance for the 2 game day session on Friday. Have you seen the fan sections that STA and Breck bring? Outside of students there is virtually nobody else that comes to see STA or Breck beyond some alumni. I know many of us from this site go to the X just to watch some great high school hockey in a great venue regardless of who is playing. If you look on this site you can see a big number of people don't enjoy private schools, especially in class A, so I'm guessing people weren't going just to watch a STA/Breck game. Also, Friday is more of a day people take off for the weekend and is more convenient than a Wednesday or a Thursday. Just my thoughts.
The reason the first game started 30 minutes late was due to the long lines outside to get in the arena, pretty certain the first game was the 2 and 3 seed game Breck/STA. You underestimate the sense of "community" STA has with there alumni.

Attendance for Class A isn't low because the schools are from small towns. Attendance is low because people without connections to the schools involved don't find the games interesting. It's not just competitive games people want, they want to see the best teams in the state playing.

Ditto to this. Don't remember the last time I missed a game. I just like the atmosphere and purity and Minnesota appeal. Just was raised watching it and I never stopped.

So from 1945-1968 teams from the Cities (actually just St. Paul Johnson) won 4 of the 22 titles. All others were Northern Schools. Do you think the folks in the cities spent their time at the barber shops and taverns whining about how those Northern schools all dominated the tourney and it was not fair? Do you think they talked about having a separate tourney for the Northern schools?

No, I think they were embarrassed that they had so many more kids yet won so few titles. And likely envious of the commitment to hockey these schools had.

Until 1969 the hockey tournament held very little sway. The NCAA tournament was of little consequence. The state basketball tournament was THE thing. Hockey has been big in some towns in the north and in the Twin Cities. In other parts of the state, hockey has never taken hold. But nearly every school no matter how small has a gym and a basketball team.
That's what people thought about when northern schools were winning championships.

Oh well, can't change attitudes, and it certainly isn't worth an effort.
Fortunately, there's nothing in the state tourney charter stating "Games will only be held if the attendance numbers please the metro folks".......
Why A attendance numbers bother you metro folks so much is interesting though......
Aren't (according to you) the best teams in the state already playing in the AA tournament ?
And if so, then why do you care what is happening on the A side ?

Eveleth was the STA of the 40's.
Except 2.5 million people didn't live in Eveleth.

I just watched the tape delay of today's East game and they had a profile of John Mayasich...he said his mom and dad never watched him play a game...ever. His Dad was working in the mines and his mother was busy raising 12 kids.
Yep, just like today's privates....lol

12 children? Evidently dad wasn't always at the mines.

Todays STA game was proof that select teams dont belong in "A" - don't belong in "AA" and dont belong in the MSHSL. Take Hill and the other privates and go somewhere else. A game is suppose to be fun. The whole bunch of 'em takes fun out of the game. Choke on your trophys and get out.

Northern schools did not have the competitive advantage that private schools do, today. This isn't just about success at developing local talent.
Level the playing field, and you have no grounds for complaints.
