Anne Girtz
"For the first game of the Kvalserien, we were playing one of the relegated Riksserien teams, SDE. About 10 minutes into the first period, another girl and I were going hard for an icing; I lost my edge around the bottom of the circles and hit my shoulder full-force into the end boards.
Stunnned, I got up, didn't feel much pain, but knew something was very off with my shoulder. I slowly skated to the bench while the refs and my teammates motioned for me to get to the other end of the ice for the face-off after the icing call. I shook my head no, and climbed, dazed, into our bench.
I put my gloves and stick down and reached into my shoulder pads to feel on top of my shoulder where the pain was starting to worsen. Over my underarmour, I could feel a searing hot bump at the edge of my collar bone where it meets the shoulder. Immediately, I knew something was not right.
Fast forwarding through the next 7 months - which included diagnosis of a grade 5 AC joint separation, two surgeries to repair the torn ligaments in my shoulder, and 6 months of rehab, I am now back at full ability, and very impatiently ready for the first game of the season -- which happens tomorrow."

Worst Concussions
"The worst is women's college hockey. For the more common sports, especially in this area, softball, basketball, and soccer are the three primary areas that have been studied. Two to three times the amount of female concussions occur in those sports than males," says Dr. Balagna."

Haley Irwin
Irwin suffered a concussion in January 2015, while playing for the Canadian Women's Hockey League's Calgary Inferno. As she closed in on clearance to play later that year, a chronic hip injury blossomed into a condition that required surgery.
Of the two maladies, rehabilitating the hip was more straightforward. Concussions can be a one-step-forward, two-steps-back injury.
Irwin wondered whether she would be able to return to the sport and what her personal future might hold.
"I worked a lot with (a) sports psych during that time and one of the questions she asked me was, 'Who are you without hockey?'" Irwin recalled. "That one stumps you good."

doctor portrayed in movie 'Concussion' stands by conclusion that kids under 18 shouldn't play high-impact sports
"The doctor portrayed in the 2015 movie “Concussion” repeated his conclusion Wednesday that kids younger than 18 should not play football and other high-impact sports.
Dr. Bennet Omalu, who battled with the National Football League after discovering signs of a dementia-causing disease in the brain of a deceased NFL player, was the keynote speaker at the Better Business Bureau’s 21st annual Integrity Awards luncheon at the Embassy Suites in La Vista.
Clete Blakeman, an Omaha personal injury attorney and veteran NFL referee, served as the event’s honorary chairman and introduced Omalu, calling him a “game-changer” who stood up for the truth and showed “real, true moral courage,” persisting even when he was ridiculed for his findings.
Blakeman, whose physique earned him the label the “hot ref” after he served as lead official in this year’s Super Bowl, noted that the theme for the event was “Courage Under Fire.” The BBB’s awards are intended to promote the importance of ethical business practices and recognize local organizations’ commitment to them.
Omalu, played in the movie by actor Will Smith, wrote in a New York Times opinion piece weeks before the movie was released that kids under 18 have not reached the age of consent and should not play football, hockey and other such sports.
He repeated his conclusion Wednesday, saying there was no justification for children under age 18 to play high-impact sports. He said he will not let his own young son play football. “It damages your child’s brain, yet America keeps quiet because money is involved,” he said."

The latest concussion update from CBC
"I would say it is a Wild West, and I think unfortunately the people who suffer in this culture are kids and families," Reed says. "Until we get together to make sure that the people who should be delivering concussion care are delivering it, those kids and families are going to continue to not get appropriate care and to be very confused about what to do when you have a concussion.”
Private concussion clinics called a 'Wild West' of unregulated treatment
As fears about concussions grow, hundreds of clinics are profiting
