Heard the same. Wise move on his part. His style of coaching would not work in Rapids. Bit of a payback?
I’m thinking Grand Rapids hires an interim for this year with and understanding Clafton will Coach Grand Rapids next year. He wants to see this senior class through at Greenway. That’s smart and that’s perfect. Rapids needs a guy like Clafton in charge.
Won’t happen. Reed Larson is a teacher in the school district and he’s a possibility. Former Bemidji coach Wade Chido resides here now and would be a good candidate. There’s quite a few others in town too who would be plenty qualified. I don’t see the school board and AD wanting to go through this process again next season.

I hope the scenario that has been presented about Clafton being offered the job and turning it down is not accurate. I certainly would lose a lot of respect for Grand Rapids administration if this is true. How do you post a job and then offer it to someone before applicants have a chance to apply and interview?! Sounds unethical to me! This isn’t the NHL, it’s high school hockey!

Hiring an interim coach is wishful thinking and not in the best interests of the kids, knife.

You like to preach stability for the kids. Where's the stability in that? [-X ](*,)

GR should hire the best coach they can given the situation they are in. If things go well and that coach is the best long-term option for the program, then hire back for the next season. Like most places in life: make the best decision you can, evaluate that decision at the appropriate time, determine if it is best to continue with that decision, continue or make a change, re-evaluate, and repeat....

I can tell you from direct experience with a similar situation. A interim head coach could set the program back. If there is an opportunity to simply make a hire, that would be ideal.

I really could care less what they do. I’m a diehard purple so I really could care less. I actually hope they hire a mistake. That would be better for my purple too.

If the guy you want is available, then yes absolutely hire him. However, if the guy you want (long-term) is in a head coaching job currently and has some ethics and values that tell him it's not right to bail on his current program two weeks before the season starts, then you go with an interim and hire the guy you want after the season is over. Interim shouldn't be that difficult, there must be an assistant on the staff that could take the role for one season. What about Geisler?

Wait, what if Geisler (Coleraine boy) was named interim at Grand Rapids while Clafton (Grand Rapids boy) did one more season at Coleraine. Then after this season is over they both switch jobs and go to their hometowns. And they're both former Bulldogs. It's a story that writes itself!

Correction, Grant Clafton played college for St. Cloud Huskies. Clafton is the right man for the job long term no doubt about it.

Agree with the assistant. I think they should be treating this as any mid-season coaching issue because it sort of is midseason for the kids. If this were to happen in January, you would have the assistant slide into an Interim position then hire at the end of the season. I think that is how this should be handled. Especially with having a whole week go by now.

It was posted within the last week. Interested candidates had ten days to apply. What I heard. I was also told it couldn’t have been offered to anyone without posting the position, so rumors about Clafton turning it down are probably just that.
