Goldy is right. You keep numbers by allowing more kids play at the youth levels. Look at the youth teams that don't split - Rochester, Mankato, and St. Cloud. All have average high school teams. You can't pick the best players aka 'future D-I guys when they are 11-14. Most kids will never play beyond high school. Create depth and let kids play with their neighbors. You also produce less leaders, which is huge in all levels of hockey and life.
It is sad that we have fewer elite players and even fewer good players now.
High school coaches tend to work with youth/bantam teams that are their own.

Luckily Mayo has a good number of bantams coming up and some good pee wees as well.

Next year will be lean, but you never know how much players will improve in the off-season.

albert lea upsets faribault and jm ties winona?

how is jm's season going? thought they'd be a mediocre team but with just tying winona shows they are a little more than that it seems? or did jm just really expose winona's d men?

another interseting score with West upending Holy Family as well.. this crazy season continues.

2 of JM's 3 goals came off of breakaways, otherwise they didnt have too many opportunities. And for once in a very long time Winona could not put the puck away. There were many missed opportunities with a few missed open nets, literally. The play in the last 2 periods was very one - sided and its disappointing that the score didn't show the same.

What a crazy season this is so far. So far this season I had a feeling that Faribault was a vulnerable team and would get beat at times. You look at the scores of there games and most of them are close and I mean 1 goal games against teams that most of us thought would be or should be blowouts. Don't get me wrong they have some good players but for some reason they underachieve. The JM -Winona game was interesting as well but as we all know if you allow breakaway goals you can get beat by anybody. This certainly helps out Century for the big 9 title.

Just remember that when it comes to the playoffs all teams have the same record 0-0. It's the teams that can close the deal and move on.

As far as Albert Lea goes compared to the past years , I think this team has had a poor start of the first half. They are now just starting to pick up some steam as the season moves forward.

In the past Albert Lea use to spank teams like Faribault and Winona.

It is how you play at the end of the year that matters.
AL is down a bit this year, but I'm guessing they will be playing their best hockey in Feb

Mayo and JM used to always beat up on Winona and Faribault too, but RYHA has really robbed those two programs of quality players and depth in the past 7-8 years with this one A team crap - which is when the expert consultant came into the picture, not to mention the Purple Posse. Thank goodness they help the current Purple coach because he sure doesn't do much at practice! It's nice those other guys are there to tell him what to do eh?

Also Winona and Faribault are keeping their players instead of them leaving, such as Holland to Century and Rescka to Lourdes.

The Lakeville schools have their own programs so they actually get A level players every year.

If Mayo gets Spencer Lee - their best offensive player - and Sikkema healthy and McMasters is a good as people say they will finally have 3 lines. And if they get a goalie playing consistent they might be overlooked.

Today vs. LS will tell us alot about where they might be, but it could get ugly too. Don't forget that LS had an awesome pee wee A team a few years back and those kids lead the team in scoring as 9th & 10th graders now. Rochester might not send a team to state for a long time with youth hockey producing so few players now.

Winona is playing without the Florin kid. Got hurt after a hat trick in first period against AL last Tuesday. If you believe the Winona paper it sounds like he might be out for a few weeks. That might really hurt their ability to put the puck int he net.

Alex Van Galder played his best game of the year for the first two periods and than completely fell apart in the last of the 2nd and third period. It was 2-0 with about 4 min to go when South scored 2 quick goals about 10 seconds apart. This really rattled Van Galder and he couldn't get back on track. It was 6-0 Lakeville South when I left with about 10 min to play.

I think you're right though, if Mayo can get Lee and Sikema back before the playoffs they might be able to pull off the shocker. Also, isn't youth hockey supposed to be about teaching kids the skills needed to compete at the next level? Why is Rochester so concerned about winning at the Bantam level?

Also I don't know if this means anything for next year. Mayo's JV defeated Lakeville South's JV 4-1 today. DeBusman started and played a great game. The defense for Mayo was solid. Might be a better season next year for Mayo. I don't know how you could get any worse though.

Van Galder played well today. Only one goal would be considered soft today. Unfortunately his defense played poorly at times. The SH goal was a joke - 2 guys got beat by one LS penalty killer and the other guy was left out in front. Mayo's D struggled with LS's gifted forwards. He must have had 40 saves today. I think missed Sikkema and Lee's speed. The other forwards are pretty slow and it showed.

I'm not sure the JV's win means much for next year. Go to the Big Nine website and you will see that all the scoring is coming from seniors this year. Some guys will really have to improve and/or they will need some bantams to step right in because most of their scoring is from the senior forwards.

Does anyone think Century will lose the conference? They're in the driver's seat from here on out..

west wins 5 straight games, matt campbell gets his 100th point as a defensemen, congratulation to the kid rare feat great achievement

east loses 4th straight game, ries gets the lone goal for the cougars, making his goal total 26 for the season

Mankato West (7-10-1) will play Mayo on Thursday
Mankato East (9-10) will play Austin on Thursday

The Rochester district may need to another Bantam team soon. Talks are heating up to add another public high school on the southwest side of town. Won't happen for a few years, but they should think about adding another team soon.
