NEW ULM — Paul Schrupp’s power-play goal with 3:43 left in the game broke a 3-3 tie and lifted Willmar to a 4-3 win over the New Ulm Eagles in nonconference boys hockey Saturday at the New Ulm Civic Center.
Josh Mead, Jay Bredberg and Matt Kroneberger scored the other goals for the Cardinals (5-11).
Wade French, Cody Kohn and Beau Burgau scored goals for the Eagles (7-6).
Kohn added two assists with Zach Fischer also getting a helper.
While Schrupp’s score late in the game was the eventual game-winner for Willmar, it was two Willmar goals less than two minutes into the game that proved to be the difference.
Mead got the Cardinals on the board just 22 seconds into the game when he picked up a lose puck and skated in alone on Eagle goalie Kyle Fischer and beat him with a wrist shot in his glove side for a 1-0 lead.
Travis Hanson unloaded a slap shot that Fischer stopped but Bredberg was right there to stuff the rebound past Fischer just over a minute later.
“I think that giving up those two early goals did us in tonight,” New Ulm coach Erik Setterholm said. “There is no question about that. But we did not roll over — we showed some backbone. We fought back and showed a lot of character.”
The Eagles began the road back with a man down when Wade French ripped a wrist shot by Cardinals’ goalie Jon Mattison at the 7:50 mark of the opening period..
But Willmar used a two-man advantage to score its third goal of the contest when Kroneberger put the puck by Fischer at the 14 minute mark for a 3-1 lead.
After a first period that saw eight penalties called — four on each team — the second period saw the same number called with five on the Eagles.
But it was the New Ulm power play that cut the Willmar lead to 3-2 on a Kohn rocket at the 15:31 mark of the second period.
The Eagles again used their success on the power play for the game-tying goal on a Burgau shot at the 8:27 mark of the period.
The Eagles had two power play goals in the game compared to one for the Cardinals.
The third period again saw New Ulm trek to the penalty box, as the Eagles saw four penalties called on them.
“They called a ton of penalties in the game tonight but they called a couple of key penalties on us with four minutes left in the game and the game tied,” Setterholm said. “We got back in the game with Cody’s goal but then the officials took over.”
Setterholm was happy with his team’s ability to kill the power play.
“Our kill is good but they can get worn out too. You can only hold them off so long.”
The Eagle JV won 5-4.

Not really an upset. Teams are pretty equal.
Those darn "Parents Night" games. Home team always seems to come out flat.
Game had a great "playoff type" atmoshpere. Lots of "big" hits.
Shots were about 40-20 in favor of Willmar.
NU took way too many penalties and played with little discipline.
NU was a "reflection of the coach" tonight.
When you play 5 on 4 or even 5 on 3, your going to get burned.
Refs made bad calls both ways. Each team had a goal called off.
Congrats to the lads from Willmar as they took advantage of the evening and on this night were the better "team".
How can anyone pick this section!!!

Just to bring up something new, who do you think will be the best team in this section in the next few years. How are the bantam teams and JV teams.

Not much "in-section" action for awhile.
Will be good to see how these teams keep doing against other sections.
There have been some pleasant surprises.

17-2, was there really a need to run up the score like that, thats very classless in my opinion, well at least sleepy eye scored.

It was run time for the 2nd and 3rd period and marshalls top 2 lines were split up, the score could have easily gotten up to 30. I thought marshall showed a lot of class.

i agree with dangles...the score could have been alot higher, marshall did all they could to let the younger kids have some playing time, it could have been alot worse.
