obviously the biggest game of the year goes to the "best 3 refs in the state so we hope"....so with that in mind...we all have to live with it..

the call could have changed the outcome...but getting it right and having all fans,players and whoeevr wonder about all summer long is too bad

Spuds ruled for most of the year

Congrats Stars and Coach Trabull

IS IT TRUE THAT OLSON & OLSON ARE SECTION 8 REFF'S? IF SO WHY WOULD THEY BE ALLOWED TO REFF A SEC. 8 TEAM IN A CHAPIONSHIP GAME? AND IF SO THIS WAS A WORSE CALL BY THE MHSL THEN THE REFF, WHICH WAS REALLY BAD.

Quote from bigcurve961: "Apparently most of the posters on this one have never been in a situation that required a quick decision based on what happened in a "real time" sequence."

bigcurve961, would fighting in a war count by your "quick decision" criteria? I've done that... I'm good at making quick decisions under pressure, so can I be critical of a bad/horrible/one of the worst ever call please? And no, I'm not a Moorhead fan, just a hockey fan, so I really have no agenda, nothing to gain by bitchin' about this call. It's a simple matter of right, and terribly wrong!

There are certain things that a ref should have in mind before having to make a "quick decision". Whether or not they will put somebody on the power play towards the end of a game with a less than obvious penalty call, or, perhaps, whether or not to call off a goal when it is not clear as to how the puck went in the net. What a concept eh? It was quite clear that the ref had no clue as he stood behind the net and didn't make a call for several seconds. If it wasn't clear, call a goal! The puck is in the net! GOAL! Refs who consider these situations in their mind ahead of time don't make HUGE mistakes, and this was a HUGE HUGE HUGE MISTAKE! Not acceptable, especially in the championship game.

question for anyone who's reffed

Have you ever made a bad call?

I'll guess that the answer is yes.

Everyone who's reffed any sport has made a bad call at one time or another. You've got a split second to make a decision, no benefit of an instant replay, only one line of sight, and you've got to call it based on what you saw.

The ref saw a guy swing at the puck in a downward motion starting above the post, and then saw the puck go into the net. He made the call.

If you're a ref, the best you can hope for is that a call like that doesn't happen in a critical situation.

I'm sure Moorhead has had the benefit of a few bad calls over the course of the season. Every team has.

Props to Morinville for not blaming the loss on the refs.

Congrats to Moorhead on a great season. They may have been the best team in the state, but as you know, the best team in the state doesn't always win the state championship.

Congrats also to Holy Angels for a great season as well.

it is well known that these refs (at least the olson boys) do not like moorhead. they are from east grand forks and have made their points of view known in private settings.

the fact that the mshsl allowed this to occur is preposterous to say the least. section 8 refs in a state championship with participants from section 8.

aren't there any provisions in place to prevent this from happening?

<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... rassed.gif ALT=":o">

also, bluesbuddy made an excellent point that nobody wants to address:

why wasn't the replay of the call in question shown on the big screen at the Xcel?

can somebody (a mshsl official, or whoever) answer this question?

did the referees have a stake in the outcome?

was there political hanky panky?

we want answers.

it's not a question anymore about how it affected the outcome ~~~it's a question of integrity and what should be done in the future to prevent such an outrage from occuring again.

<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... rassed.gif ALT=":o">

The possibility exists that the official was processing what he saw, not that he didn't have a clue.

Your comment "It was quite clear that the ref had no clue as he stood behind the net and didn't make a call for several seconds. If it wasn't clear, call a goal! The puck is in the net! GOAL!", is nonesense.

When it's not clear, you make the best call possible using what you saw. If we use your logic, all the Holy Angel people that are reading this laughing, would be the people talking about the call.

Thank you for fighting for your country. I believe it is almost standard that questionable calls are not replayed on the big screen at events. Especially when the person running the replays knows the call was wrong. I have tons of respect for the Moorhead fans and Moorhead students. Showing the replay on the big screen could have caused something bad to happen that would have tarnished the game even more. The fact that it wasn't shown only demonstrates more that the call was blown.

i disagree . showing the replay on the big screen may have caused the referee's to consult with each other and rethink their decision after a brief conference.

why not let the truth be known?

sounds "shady" to me <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... rassed.gif ALT=":o">

Replay

First of all replay is not available to the referees. The referee had to make a split second decision based on what he saw and believe me it happens much faster at ice level with many fast moving bodies than it does on TV or from the stands. I am sure these officials feel badly that they got one wrong, but ##it happens. Should there be replay available-yes, will it ever be at the High School level-no. The goal judge can only tell an official whether the puck completely crossed the goal line-period. For anyone to suggest that these officials were biased is ridiculous. The referee at the blue line would not have had a view as the player would have been between him and the goal cage. From the angle the referee on the goal line saw the play, it is easy to see how he could have thought it was knocked in with a high stick.

No way are the refs going to stop and look at the replay on the big screen to see if it was the right call. You want to talk about controversy. I'm a Moorhead fan to the bone, but showing the replay to everyone in the building would have done no good. Between the die hard Moorhead faithful and the fans in 206, it could have got very ugly.

I'm not into bashing refs, but here is the thought process that I think must be used in this process.

1. Must be absolutely 100% sure the puck was played with the high stick.
2. Must be absolutely 100% sure the stick was actually high. I believe the rule around the goal is over the net no matter the height of the player. Is this correct???? If not, that hurts moorhead cuz cory johnson is the shortest player on their team.
3. If you aren't absolutely 100% positive on the first 2, then ask yourslef if the puck wasn't touched was it going in anyways. I know this is lame, but i just think you have to be so sure when taking a goal away.

Bottom line is that Moorhead didn't do the things it needed to win, but it sure would have been nice to see what difference that goal would have made.

They did NOT use replay in the Warroad game, the referee called the goal judge to see if the puck crossed the goal line. There is NO replay available to the referee's. And the MSHSL has instructed the person controlling replays in the arena to never show any controversy.

BB, I got it right.

What I was saying is that had the goal been counted, they would have pulled the goalie exactly when they did and that would have been the 5th goal and it would have been tied. They scored the 4th goal with the goalie pulled..that should have been the 5th.

Now, if yewz were sayin that they would have not pulled him until 40 seconds left then it wouldnt have mattered because they had that situation anyway. 5-4 40 second left, pulled goalie.

Geez, mahself tinks dat da Cesar Chavez guy was around yewz guys too much over dis lost weekend.

Even if the goal would have counted, the faceoff would have been at center and not in Moorheads zone, it would have been a completely different game from then on! Theres not much more to discuss.

I'm don't think the refs tried to screw Moorhead... the guy just made a bad call in the State Championship game! Bad call, bad time. I'm not saying to ban the guy, the Moorhead players almost took the law into their own hands on the rink... a couple of the players actually put their hands on the ref, Lee included, and the ref, realizing the magnitude of the call and the closeness of the game, didn't give any of them ten or anything like that, so I think the Moorhead bias isn't a relevant argument at all (or maybe he was scared for his physical well-being). I do, however, think that this guy lacks the experience and preparation skills to ref such a big game... he made some "interesting" calls in other games too... the mustached-boys were much better game officials. I also want to say that I'm glad that these guys come out to officiate our games, as it's not something I have ever desired to do... I'd probably end up killing a kid or coach, so, yeah, bad idea. If he would have made the call right away I would have not been so critical, but he just stood there, and I honestly think he played "eenie meenie miney moe" behind the net... you don't do that in such a big game.
