3-1 Final for HM. Game reminded me of so many section games against WBL where Hill jumps out to a lead and then sits on it to let the other team have chance after chance. Stillwater could have easily won the game and dominated long stretches of it. This will be the first game where we can say Hanggi really stole one. He played outstanding tonight. Vanek sure has a great shot and the Jarvis kid was all over the ice for Stillwater. In the end, HM beat both WBL and Stillwater and earned the ability to only face one of them again in a section final. Was an exciting game...

Odd game. Hill jumped on Stillwater immediately to start the game. Things evened out significantly after that. I agree, Hanggi played fantastically tonight, which was needed.

I assumed Stillwater would come to play, and this game ended up almost exactly where I thought it would. I was thinking this was going to be a 3-1 or 4-2 game for Hill. Stillwater is a very very good team, ranked #7? So I wasn't expecting a blowout, especially being @Stillwater and knowing what was at stake: Hill locks up the #1 seed in 4AA tonight. If Stillwater won, they would be in line for the #1, assuming they could beat WBL in their rematch.

Stillwater came out flat for the first ten minutes, and they paid dearly for that. They are a very nice team, they're speedy and they can move the puck. They took a lot of shots. Keeping them scoreless for the roughly 2:30 at the end with 6 skaters was an accomplishment. If that were a section game, I'd have been very nervous the entire third period.

Of course, Stillwater enjoyed some tasty home cookin' from the zebra, and there's no surprise there.

If Stillwater had only been able to recruit a top notch goalie, one who could hold them in a game when they're getting outplayed for a solid ten minutes, they'd really be a threat.

EDIT: I'm not sure if it was a hard sellout, I doubt it. It's a nice building, ten times better than that crappy place White Bear plays. I'd have thought the atmosphere would be more electric, more of a playoff feel.

Stillwater clearly outplayed Hill the second and third period, but they need to learn to hit the net. They missed at least five or six wide open shots.

Not sure where you get the home cooking from, he is noted for taking cheap shots. They could’ve had a lot more penalties called on them. Refs did a nice job on letting them play.

More like 1,000 times better than the home ice for White Bear.

If "letting them play" means "overlooking Stillwater penalties", you're right. In the second period, ten feet in front of the ref in the corner a Hill player had his stick slashed right out of his hands, with no call. Twice in the third the puck came out of the Hill end by a foot and was batted right back in, no off sides.

Nobody gets more favorable calls from the referees then Lechner/Hill. However, I was impressed that the Hill goalie didn’t kick the net off 15 times like he normally does.

Right. It sends a tingle up my spine when I think about when we score a goal at the Fuse Box and 90% of the attendees leap to their feet. We're always the fan favorite, everyone loves us, from Austin to I Falls, from the St Croix to the Red River. It actually gets a little embarrassing. And the anti-SEC bias of the zebras, why the MSHSL should investigate that instead of harassing innocent goalies who just want to move in with a relative a few counties away.

I won’t comment much on ref home cookin - I don’t know that it exists to any real extent in high school hockey. If it does, I’m confident in saying Hill isn’t getting the benefit of the majority of calls.

Regarding last night’s game, there was at least one egregious missed stoppage. Stillwater was in Hill's zone, the puck was a country mile out of the zone, refs missed it, and it directly resulted in Hill taking a penalty that should have never happened. Beyond that, I didn’t see anything else that stuck out on screen.

Assuming Vanek on Stilly is related to Thomas?

It’s his son, and Thomas is the assistant coach to Greg Zanon

And I assume Geisbauer's dad was Jay Geisbauer who was a star for Johnson in the early 90's and then played up at St. Cloud St. Fun to see these names keep coming through.
