Trojans back to the X. 3-1, empty net. Incredible. Wish I could have seen the Wayzata goalie.

Wow, just when everyone thought Edina had an easy path to the X, Wayzata says otherwise. Waszczenko played the game of his life. My brother texted me and said Edina ran into the 2002-03 version of Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

The CCX Media video feed was corrected in the second period, and was fine throughout the rest of the game.

Waszczenko played out of his mind but this wasn't exactly a fluke. Wayzata will give some teams trouble next week.

Any team next week can beat any other team. I can't think of a more even state tournament ever played, no matter who wins these last sections. EP will be the favorite, but they could lose 2 and out just as easily.

Does beg the question how they lost so many games this year.

Great win for Wayzata.

Waszczenko put on a performance that was something to see. Definitely the game's No. 1 star and maybe you should give him Nos. 2 and 3 too.

Actually with their schedule and overall talent level (good but nothing exceptional) I can understand why. Plus you can't expect the kind of goaltending that they got tonight over the course of the entire season. Ditto on the compete level which was outstanding tonight.

Wow! A work of art by the Trojans! Wayzata goalie incredible. His record going into regions 1 and 12 and 1. You win with defense goaltending....and Casey! GB

Wayzata wins 3-1, shots something like 33-25 for Edina

Wayzata scores about 25 seconds in the game when a bouncing puck finds its way to Griffin Ness and he has an open net to score. I thought Mackay looked shaky after that as he dropped a puck or two, but he was not at fault of any of the goals. He played good enough for the game.
In the second Brinkman scores on the powerplay when Wayzata has a bad clear after a scramble and he scores top shelf. Waszczenko looked partially screened. Brinkman had hit the crossbar about 15 seconds earlier with a very similar wrist shot.
In the 3rd, the game winning goal comes from Tyler Stevens. The puck comes back into the Edina zone, Brinkman is coasting after it while Urban is hot on his tail. Brinkman goes around the net, Urban pokes it lose, Stevens gets a open shot.
The empty netter was scored with a second left, one wayzata kid took off his helmet after it happened, Waszczenko took off his gloves, kind of funny, reminded me of last year's state championship game. Anyway, puck came back to brinkman at the point and he whiffed on it, comes outside the zone and a Trojan took it all alone and put it into the net from the blueline for the winner.

Before I give my analysis I want to congratulate Wayzata, They wanted the Win more tonight.

After being at the game, I am not sure I agree 100% of what people have said on here so far. After watching that game, I don't think Wayzata will give a seeded team much trouble. I don't think Wayzata is a great team. To be honest, I didn't even think they played the trap that well. When I watched them, I understood why they were below .500. Wayzata has a decent defense, and a solid goalie and then two good forwards. They could not generate any consecutive pressure in the offensive zone. Both their goals came off quick entries. They were very opportunistic. Wayzata could win a game at state, heck they could win two, but I expect to see them back in Dinkytown.
I also don't think Waszczenko stole the game like it has been said. He was very, very, very good tonight, but he didn't steal the game. He made great saves, notably the breakaway against Moon. Walker made a perfect pass just outside a Trojan's reach where Moon came in alone starting at the red line. He came left to right on his backhand and Waszenko stretched out and grabbed it with his glove. The glove was a theme, he saved everything at his glove, he picked 3 or 4 out of the air and flashed it. It was quite impressive, but if you realize a guy has a strength, don't shoot it there. Edina did not get that memo. Again, Waszczenko was excellent, but the opportunities were there for Edina especially in the last 5 minutes. Waszczenko gave up 3 large rebounds in front of the net, where anyone of them could have been scored. Jungels and Walker were sitting on the doorstep on two with an open net, but were tied up well. Moon had a wide open net after a rebound and was handcuffed and whiffed. Waszczenko was very good, but Edina was given the opportunities to score.

I don't mean to be so harsh because Wayzata earned this win. They played harder, they out hustled and out muscled Edina. They are also still, an excellent puck blocking team. They came out pretty strong in the 3rd period too.
It was a frustrating game to watch as an Edina fan, but I was probably one of the first people to call this happening back in like december. The person I was with kept relating it to the Duluth East game, but the only similarity is that it was frustrating to watch.
Maybe you could argue the players on Edina for both those games got a bit too individualistic as the game went on. Edina controlled probably 80% of the game I thought.

After watching Holy Family and EP, it didn't seem like Edina was in either of those two teams talent bracket. Edina was lazy, lethargic and full of mistakes. Players were not catching passes, mishandling the puck, bad shots etc.

I thought the officiating was pretty bad, but I recognize I am biased, and so too are the Edina players. I got sick of watching Edina raising their arms looking for a call and whining about not getting them instead of just battling through adversity. At some point you just have to battle through and take what you want. Also, of all the years that Giles has played only two line, of all the years that he has cut his bench down, I'm not why he didn't do that this year. I realize Edina's strength is usually depth, but I didn;t think the 3rd line was great for a 3rd line and I thought he would shorten the bench when they were down a goal in the 3rd, but it didn't happen. Edina's strength I think is in the defense, yet they only play two pairs, even though they have depth there to play 3, while their offense was put on 3 lines when I didn't think they had that. A bit funny I guess since we are usually arguing about not using that depth, but I guess that was my issue with it, why now with this group playing a third line? Probably not a fair point, but it was something I was thinking about. One of those moments where the coach gets criticized either way

Anyway, congrats again to Wayzata, their heart was into it more I thought and are well deserving of state with their performance.
I will be rooting for the Spuds next week.

Well, I think we knew Wayzata had it in them. Was very tempted to pick them on the podcast this past week, but couldn't quite pull the trigger. Say what you will about their style, it wins games when it counts. There's talent on defense, they've got a couple of kids who can score, the rest know what to do within the system...mix in a hot goaltender, and you can pull of a big upset.

Curious to hear from the Edina faithful...just too inexperienced in big games? All those early departures coming home to roost? Or just an ugly matchup with a tough rival that was on its game?

I think its a complex answer. I would say inexperience played a part, but then again the best players for them tonight were Boltman, Vorlicky, Jungels and walker. 3 of those 4 are inexperienced. Brinkman scored the lone goal, Mackay played good enough. The players who didn't step up were the experienced players.
And like I said in my previous post, Wayzata did do some good things, they blocked shots well and they recovered from an ugly 2nd with a solid 3rd period, but I didn't think they played their system as well as I had seen them in the past. They gave up about 8 2 on 1's, one breakaway, countless uncontested shots from the slot, and 2 or 3 that I woudn't call breakaways, but where an Edina guy was behind the last D from close in. Their D was getting skated around a lot, I don't know.
Wayzata was opportunistic on their two goals and Edina played poor I think. The answer I am going with is half Wayzata being opportunstic and crashing down in the 3rd period plus a good performance in net and half Edina just being not very good tonight.

Unbiased fan here, just came to watch some good hockey and I got what I wanted.

I saw a post about the crowd being underwhelming. Sure it isn't what it used to be-but all in all it was a success. Marriucci is still the perfect venue IMO.

Hands down the Wayzata goalie was the story. Wayzata did do a nice job of clogging lanes and blocking shots. However, the quality of chances were very lopsided in the Hornets favor. I don't like knocking HS kids but if you flip-flop goalies its probably a laugher. To me, O'Leary is a heck of a coach. His teams play disciplined hockey, stopping on pucks, fronting shooters, playing from the inside-out. Wayzata won't win the state title but they'll be a tough out.
