Angus,

I do believe you nailed it. Those five would have to be at the to of any list. Let me throw out a few more that might draw some considration:

George Pelawa, Bemidji - This guy was absolutely dominant and a first round draft pick coming out of HS. Died in a tragic car accident that summer.

Pat Micheletti, Hibbing - Absolutely tenacious. Great scorer and could get under the skin of any opponent.

Scott Lecy, Rochester JM - A scoring machine for JM. In fact, I think he still hold the unofficial record for points in a season (112 - don't quote me on that).

Jon Casey, Grand Rapids - I kow there have been a number of great HS goaltenders, but this guy was the best I've seen.

Aaron Broten, Roseau - I've seen a lot of talk about Neal on this thread, but not much about Aaron. He could flat-out play.

Keep the names coming. Brings back some good memories.

And, by the way, Angus is right about Spehar. That kid could could bring you out of your seat anytime he touched the puck.

Definately Ken Yackel as one of the top D from Minnesota. Played for the Gophers and The Bruins in the NHL. On the 1960 Olympic team I believe. When I was younger my dad always raved about him. Probably one of the best Minnesota D this state has seen.

DoRight101,
How can you say that Aaron Broten doesn't belong in this discussion when he along with Neal and Butsy Erickson each had over 100 points during the 78' season. He led the state tournament in scoring two years in a row. Led the nation in scoring in 1981 with 106 points and a total of 179 points in two years at the University of Minnesota and played ten years in the National Hockey League. If that doesn't justify being noted on this list, what does?

Ram Hockey
Edited by: <A HREF=

Two of the best players from minnesota high school hockey both came from Elk River.... Joel Otto, came up when Elk River was a nothing town with terrible hockey, played college hockey at Bemidji State where he won a national title, got drafted after that and went on to win a Stanley cup and play in the Olympics. And Paul Martin, Mr. Hockey winner, drafted by New Jersey right out of high school, went on to play for the gophers where he won two national titles and is now getting a regular shift for the defending champion New Jersey Devils....

Not a chance...

My dad and uncles raved about Mayasich. Reed Larsen belongs on the list, but not in the broadcast booth. Steve Christoff and Craig Norwich were both very good.

your dad and uncles had good reason....the guy had like 8 goals in the finals one year. 15 in the tournament that year. he would play like..35-40 minutes a game,..rarely off the ice. he is the true father of minnesota high school hockey.

bonin

"What about Brian Bonin, no one has mentioned him. He had a great high school career for WBL. "

Brian was one of the best high school players I have ever seen. The thing that might of held him back is state touranment appearances. I believe the team that kept him out of it was always Hill Murray(Jefferson was the team of the 90's but, Hill and Moorhead were usually in the tourney and made some pretty good runs). Petey keeps talking about Crowley because of his 3 state championships but, look at the the supporting cast he had(over 12 division 1 hockey players I believe). I'm not flaming Crowley what so ever. He was a two-time all american at the U of M the first defensemen to lead the WCHA in scoring since Lou Nanne and if he wouldn't of left the U of M early he would of put up a fight for a hobey baker. Bonin did win a hobey but, in high school he did not have enough help to get it done. Both players should be mention in this thread.

How about Larry Olimb. The kid never came off the ice the entire state tournament when he played. He was Warroad at the time.

Darby Hendrickson, absolutely amazing at Richfield. Also, nobody has really mentioned any goalies. How about Karl Goehring from Apple Valley, he was awesome in Apple Valley's State Title Run in 96'.

So many great players, so little time.

John Mayasich, obviously. Mike Antonovich, Neal and Aaron Broten, Butsy Erickson, Phil Housley, can't forget Corey Millen - he was tremendous. Big George Pelawa was a helluva player. I remember when his Jacks routed my Spuds in the 1986 Section 8 title game. Brian Bonin was great. I'd have to add Billy Lund of Roseau to the list. Mike Crowley was one of the best. Tom Chorske and Larry Olimb.. Darby Hendrickson, Ryan Kraft, Jamie Langenbrunner, Dave Spehar, Jeff Taffe, Derek Plante, Troy Riddle, Matt Cullen, Paul Martin, Chris Locker.. Obviously I haven't named them all, these are off the top of my head.

Neal and Aaron Broten Broten both belong on the list. Another player that played high school hockey in the late 50's was a defenseman from Roseau named Don Ross. The locals here say he was one of the best to ever come out of Roseau, and that says alot.

I have to say there are some great players that come out of MN hockey! Jamie Langenbrenner, Derek Plante, and don't forget about the younger boys still waiting their turn; Josh Johnson-one of the best goalie's i saw in high school, nate wood has always been awesome, and the list goes on! MN breeds the best players, there must be something in the water! Love always, ME!

henry boucha, neal broten, and george pelawa have got to be up there. for goalies...i would say shelstad of southwest in the 70's was one of the best.
