I might add some perspective. Stating the obvious...our HS enrollment is 630. Half the size of Mahtomedi. We typically have barely enough kids tryout to fill both HS and JV. Our Bantam and PeeWee AA's did not crack the top 20 in rankings this year. All that said, we do have a high participation rate in hockey within our low numbers and lots of parents with high level hockey experience. Like many with hockey background I chose to live in a place where there kids will have great schools, great coaching, and lots of outdoor ice. I am a parent of 2 players at Hermantown, 1 Bantam and one squirt...I would hope my Bantam plays single A but but the time my squirt is in HS...he competes in AA as our community grows. But, at present time I firmly believe single A is were we belong to grow our program.
Why doesn't this apply to your youth teams?

Is there anywhere to see population by high school boundaries?

You can't honestly say that you are still "growing" your program. Gone to stay 7 times in the last 9 years and been in the title game for most of them, granted you have only won 1 because of STA staying down for so long but i think its blatantly obvious that your program has outgrown single A. Its getting old at this point.

High School boundaries don't matter anymore. It's really not relevant in a Metro area.

Seriously???
4 Mite 1 teams
5 Mite 2 teams
4 Squirt teams
3 Pee Wee teams
3 Bantam teams
Yeah, that sounds like a association that barely has enough teams to fill a Varsity and JV to me too.

As long as your top 35 try out, who cares? Players 36-100 don't really matter, do they? How many tried out in Roseau this year?

Here's the thing, I don't like the 2-class system (reason's don't belong in this post), but about the only positive thing I see in it - is that it can help bring a program around. Get some showings at State, increase your numbers and so on.
This has worked well for Hermantown and a number of other rural schools, but now Hermantown is there and it is time to move up and let someone else try to do the same, say Denfeld or Hibbing. Let them build and then move up as well.
I look at this Hermantown team and a bunch of others and I see a AA team - they just are. They beat 7AA Cloquet (and tied them) Rapids and Marshall. Who's to say what they would have done with East, ER and a couple of other 7AA's, but at least a split with them I would guess and they would have had a #2, #3 or #4 seed in the section at worst.
What would be more satisfying getting a crack at beating your arch-nemesis or running up the score on a team you outshot 50-10.
Until the merger in Duluth East also would have been able to play A - should they have? What and won 12 A tourneys in a row. NO.

Sorry, I could go on and on and on - and I guess I am.
Do you think Locker and Spehar should have been in the A tourney? What so Spehar could have gone for Mayasich's record - hahaha
I am not saying Pionk and Kero are the same thing, but they deserve more. They were not challenged out there.
Try this on for size:
Hermantown not only hurts itself by staying in A, they are hurting all of Northland hockey, both 7AA and 7A!
We want more AA programs, we want the Hibbings, Greenways, Denfelds, I Falls to have success and to get back to where they belong. Hermantown trouncing them every year in another bid to pad stats is hurting their chances and all of the Northland's.

And I would not cheer for Rapids if the made it to the tourney either. Not that I have worry about that happening.

Quarters of the A tourney are rarely competitive. There are always 2 weak sections...There are 4 teams in section 7A alone that would have beaten SLP badly. Can't blame the Hawks boys for beating an unranked team.

Can you blame them for having their top line polish off Hat Tricks with 1:30 left in running time?

SLP is lucky Herm did not 10 goal them as they easily could have. Cloquet would be a good fix for section 5A.

Probably about the same...and one could argue they would likely not be in St.Paul now in class A let alone AA. They have a great tradition but I would
be amazed if they ever compete in AA again. In my opinion they belong and would better serve their program in single A.

Actually no...those boys score. That's what they do. It could have been much worse.

Lead story on PA's show on KFAN is the "Hermantown Running Up the Score" story.
Oof, the Hawks are catching some serious crap for what happened last night.
I agree you don't stop playing and that the other team needs to stop you if they don't want to get buried, but two goals by top line in last 90 seconds? It is a bit much.

We have always competed in the top level in Bantam/PW...and most years
get beat down by the cities Mega-associations and their 12 team levels. No question it helps the boys prepare to compete very well in single A. Seems to be a model that works. This team is the best I've seen I am confident they
would have done fairly well in AA, but so would Mahtomedi, EGF, DM, Denfeld and maybe few others. We are just a REALLY good A program. Like Edina in AA people hate us for it and as sad as it is...I guess that's human nature.

We will always field a strong top 6...and have 1-2 good D men, but after that the vast majority of years we will not match up well against AA with kids coming out of their ears. That is the difference.

So according to all of the previous logic, Edina, HM, Blaine, Wayzata should all move up to AAA?
The state tourney needs to remain as regionally based sections on school enrollment, period. Fiddling around just muddys the waters and injects politics into decisions and all of you would then have 10 times more things to gripe about.
I'd be entirely happy if Hermantown beats everyone by ten goals and entirely happy if they lose by ten goals.
You're all sounding like a bunch of whining socialists. Root for your teams and enjoy the hockey.
