In our lone game to start Week 5 it was:

Wayzata 4, Irondale 2

Wayzata scored three consecutive goals in the opening period and went on to beat Irondale 4-2 at the Schwan’s Super Rink in Blaine. Natalie Heising of Wayzata and Alex Toupal of Irondale each had a goal and an assist. Shots on goal were very nearly even at 31-30.

No. 3AA Wayzata was heavily favored by our panel by a 25-4 margin. RailingWizardofOZ and u12dad are off to a nice start with the extra point for predicting the 4-2 score.

Five games are on tap for tomorrow evening, including a very interesting matchup between Achiever Academy and Lakeville South. Our group is favoring the Cougars, but only by two at 15-13, with one saying it will end in a tie. Each of the other four games have an overwhelming favorite, so correct scores figure to be important!

Generally speaking, those who don't have sentimental favorites tend to do better in these contests.

That said, in tonight's game against Lakeville South, a slight majority has Lakeville South winning, with 18 yeas and 14 nays, plus one tie.

But in Saturday's game down in the unfriendly venue of the Dodge County Ice Arena, a solid majority is favoring the home team, by a margin of 23 to 9, plus one tie.

Both should be good hockey games.

I try not to get too excited, sinbin - life's too short, and after all hockey's just a game. That said, it IS the best game in all of sports, no contest!

As for my even-handed demeanor, thanks for the compliment! I've been on the board for quite a few years now, and have always tried to keep it positive.

First reported final of the evening, from “the Hinterlands” no less:

Warroad 2, Thief River Falls 4

Emily Bergland’s power play goal at 7:20 of the 3rd period broke a 2-2 tie, and Madison Poole scored just over a minute later to seal the 4-2 win for the Prowlers of Thief River Falls. Frances Marshall stopped 26 of 28 Warroad shots for the win.

32 of 33 picked Thief River to win, and in what I think is an all-time high, there were EIGHT who also got the score right to add the bonus point: ERhockeydad, clutterbucket, backspin, Misterright, RailingWizardofOZ, MIYY4U, sinbin and spars46.

In another game when the higher ranked team and favorite of our group pulled out the win:

Roseville 4, Edina 7

After a scoreless first period in which the two teams combined for just 13 shots, the game took a sharp turn as both offenses got rolling in the second and then really got rolling in the third, when they scored four and then seven goals respectively. Pacing Edina was Riley Anderson with 3 goals and an assist, and Taylor Williamson with one goal and three assists and Emily Oden with four assists. Leading the way for Roseville was Erika Bjorkman, with two goals and one assist. Amazingly, the teams combined for 31 shots in the third period, four more than their total in periods one and two.

In our contest Edina was favored by 30 of 33, and not surprisingly no one guessed the score.

Hey, Maverick2000, I've been there, really! It was a U14A tournament, about 10 years ago now, and it seemed like the whole county showed up to cheer on the home team!

In a game that was much closer than expected by most:

Mounds View 1, Minnetonka 2 (OT)

No. 1AA Minnetonka’s Annelise Rice scored the game-winner at 5:24 of the overtime period, on the power play, to edge 18AA-ranked Mounds View. Emma Bigham opened the scoring for the Skippers with 10 minutes gone in the second period, but the Mustangs’ Sydney Brodt tied it up two minutes later. In the scoreless third period, Tonka held Mounds View without a shot on goal, and for the game had a 38-14 shot advantage. Mary Dingman had a stellar game in net, stopping 36 of them.

All but one had the No. 1 ranked Skippers winning, but again there were no correct scores….lots of 3-1’s and one had it 1-0, but most predicted Tonka would win more decisively. Kudos to the Mustangs for giving them a real good run.
