Great history lesson. Things change I get it. What point are you trying to make? Our numbers are down, but so are they elsewhere. Yes we all know you love the High School system, more power to you. We do not, thats why we play Throughbreds. How in anyway does that effect you? Achiever Academy is the real threat to your system. The Thoroughbreds will continue and the girls playing will get better and form a real bond as teammates and friends. On the weekend after Thanksgiving we are hosting a tournament at Highland arena with 16 teams from all over North America, why don't you come and watch its free.

The T-Breds aren't "hanging on" in a negative way. They have plenty of talent and play hard. Unfortunately, a short bench will catch up with you when you play 20 minute periods at the pace of the JWHL.

As has been noted, the dynamics of the sport have changed over the last five years or so. In Minnesota the fall elite league now gains players exposure above that which they really only got during the summer "AAA" season. However, the numbers of players moving on to D1 has remained consistent (roughly 35 a year), even with the addition of several new programs in D1.

The T-Breds exist as an option for players who need to develop their game, and/or don't have solid options in their area. The T-Breds joined the JWHL because of the level of play and exposure offered to colleges, particularly those in the East.

As I said, things have changed, and there are now a lot of very talented players in non-traditional areas. To boost their numbers in the coming years the T-Breds may need to adjust their model some, and recruit well outside of the upper mid-west, as do all of the other teams in the JWHL.

There is a ton of talent in the US, Canada, and abroad looking for places to play so as to elevate their game and gain exposure. While the cost may seem prohibitive to some, there are plenty of people who are willing to pay the freight, particularly since it is well below the cost of private schooling or on par with the typical expense incurred for tuition and travel (player and parent driving, flying, hotel, food etc) as part of a AAA team in other parts of North America. (Most of you Minny folks take for granted just how good you have it with a pretty compact footprint for the bulk of your season.)

This coming weekend the Thoroughbreds will be playing in Syracuse, which is centrally located to dozens of college programs. There will be many college coaches in attendance. While they may tail off some over the last 20 minutes, and regardless of their record T-Bred players will be noticed, and next year they will be playing on college teams across the country.

Thanks Hux for the post. Just an update, we have added 4 players and 2 will be in Syracuse this weekend. Earlier in the month at Albany NY we played well and had a great game against Washington Pride (won 2 to 1) with our 9 players. The new players will help greatly. Remember our Thanksgiving tournment starts next Friday at Highland. 16 teams, food, free addmission and losts of fun.

And sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm not too familiar with how the JWHL works on the girls side. Are these high school students foregoing their MSHL eligibility to play for you? Or 2013 grads playing nationally for a year before college because they weren't scouted as hs students or wanted a chance to increase their options?

No question is stupid. Our schedule is up to date, Our roster on the website is not. A volunteer does our website, so its not updated regularly. Yes the girls give up their MSHL eligibility. They don't play for me , I am a parent. My oldest played years ago with the Thoroughbreds as well as my youngest now. We don't recruite, the players find us. Several girls give it a try routinely with no strings, most enjoy the level of play and coaching and are willing to go through the 2 week tryout process. Each player has different reasons to join the team, and we don't care what they are as long as they are there to give 100%. Having 2 D1 scouts as well as 1 D3 scout at our practices every now and then also helps. Hope you attend our tournement, it will be fun.

Looks like their roster took a postive bump with girls having varisty experience.

The 2 new players have been a nice addition. The varsity experience is not what has helped, its just that we can role 2 lines of forwards and d without someone double shifting. It gives the girls a chance to recharge. I can say, even when we had 9 skaters, no one complained, they just skated their hearts out. Many of the coaches in the JWHL commented how inpressed they were with the Minnesota girls and their determination, never quitting or slowing down.

I remember Turner when she played at Duluth. She was a stud. Played football too if I remember correctly. They had Bellamy and Turner in net back when Fryklund was coach. What a combo. I always wondered what happened to her after her stint with UMD. Based on the stats you provided, she's doing a fine job at EC. Thoroughbreds have a fine history of developing collegiate players. Great option for girls who want to elevate their experience.
