HM welcomed HB back and beat Hibbing 5-0 to win the consolation bracket. Hannah had 3 goals and an assist in her return. Shots were 51-11.
come on it was Hibbing not Edina they should have won 10 to 0 on running time
When shots are 51-11, that says enough. Sometime a goalie makes the saves. I'll take that margin in shots any night of the week.
Schafhauser will not run up scores. If it gets to 5 or 6 goals ahead against a weak team, he will try and keep it there.

No surprises there, the two teams playing with a full roster advance to the championship game. Overall a good tourney for all, too bad so many players were missing.

Than why did they beat Henry Sibley 11 to 1 and Simley 8 to 1 Tartan 8 to 1 if they don't run up scores

I watched the Sibley game and Schafhauser did move HB back to D late in that game - in the 3rd period at least it appeared she was playing there. It seemed that she was setting up other players more than trying to run up the score by taking the puck on her own - but I could be wrong. HM has typically been very good about the 5-6 to 0 score being enough. It could be that adjustments were made in some games and they still were scoring goals.
I've had that happen when the adjustments are made. Sometimes the opposing team stops playing or starts playing their 3rd string goalie that can't stop a beach ball or less experienced skaters that make it even harder to score control.
This is a never-ending discussion about how to handle these situations. Do you sit your best players? Do you not shoot? Is there a "x-pass" rule before a shot? Do you move players into different positions? Do you try to work on alternate systems? Do you try to run your PP vs the other team when they are full-strength? Etc., etc. Not shooting, intentionally playing a player short, etc. can have mixed results and either get you punched by, or a sincere thank you from, the opposing coach after the game depending on the individual.
Usually if these contests are expected - a little conversation between coaches before the game might be a good idea. I saw this happen once when a coach had to put a skater (inexperienced goalie) in the net for a game against a top team in the state.

When HM was up 6-0 to start the 3rd period against a good Eden Prairie team he also moved Hannah Brandt back to defense and she played sparingly. I'm not sure if that was to prepare for the Christmas tournament without her or if it was just to give other girls a chance to play, both of which were good ideas. It sort of backfired though as Eden Prairie outscored the Pioneers 3-0 that period for a final score of 6-3. There are still a few more games against teams that could produce ugly scores, so we'll see how it is handled there. There isn't much point in putting up 20 in a game however, and while HB is a strong canidate for Ms. Hockey, putting her on defense is a classy move which isn't helping her numbers (not that she needs more points).

I wonder if HM actually lucked out by losing the first game. Roseville beats Blake in a shootout and ends up 0-2-1 in the Tournament, while HM loses game 1 and then wins two games against easier opponents (granted one was Blake who tied Roseville) to go 2-1-0 in the tournament. So while Roseville technically took 4th and HM technically took 5th, HM probably got a leg up in the race to #1 in 4AA by taking 5th and only losing once. Weird how that works...

It is painfully obvious that Roseville is a completely different squad without Stecklein and Flug...

Oh ya, I can see how it would be tough to compete with only a All state goalie and three othe D1 committed players.
Puts in perspective what WBL is missing with the loss of Hansen. Does anyone know if she will be back this year?

I should have used the

icon. Was just being a smart ass. No team is going to not suffer losing the likes of Stecklein and/or Flug. Should be fun come Sections however. When all teams are full strength should make for some great competition.
