Ah yes, I remember this now.
I wonder if this means someone else (Anoka?) will be added to this section after the realignment at the end of this season. Or some other team could opt up, of course... *coughDenfeldcough*
How about Duluth Marshall opting up will that ever happen or do they want to stay in the JV Level forever.

Yes, this is official.
If he is transfering to Cloquet from another school, wouldn't he need to sit a year or play JV for a year before being Varsity eligible? Or is he a 9th grader? Any ideas...
I believe he is a senior and they took up residence in Cloquet

Correct...if the family moves, the player doesn't need to sit out.

I think I've lost all hope of that ever happening.

Hey Karl and Lee what is East doing scheduling a single A team in Princeton? You boys should of come up to the 'snake pit' to take on the 'green machine' of Greenway!!

I believe they agreed to a two year committment. East scheduled some 7AA teams last year so this is the second year of that. Little did they know that Princeton would move down.

My guess as to what the seedings will be this year for the top 5.
1. Duluth East - Lots of talent, lots of expectations, lots of pressure
2. Elk River - Best goalie in the section?
3. Grand Rapids - If sophmores produce scoring, look out
4. Cloquet - Hard work will create opportunities, but talent to finish chances?
5. Forest Lake - They win occasional quarterfinal game, but never reach final.
Semi-finals @ Amsoil Arena (arena.decc.org)
GAME 1 Duluth East vs. Cloquet
GAME 2 Elk River vs. Grand Rapids
I'll make my section final participants and winner picks later.

On paper, this section is East's once again, as much as some of our number love to hate them.

This year's East team should be stronger than last year's, and though they took a couple of lumps last year, they were not seriously challenged in sections. The talent pool at forward, though perhaps without a superstar (yet), is deeper than any in recent memory, and there just aren't any pressing weaknesses. They can't take anything for granted, and they're going to be a rather young team, but the title is theirs for the taking.
Flake is on the rise, certainly, and could definitely be a top-15 team. They have one very deep class, yes, but past experience suggests teams with one good class (take Andover last year, for example) usually generate a lot of hype but don't ever make the big leap. Depth is key--to have a big year, they'll need to fill in the gaps via contributions from the less-hyped senior and sophomore classes, and also erase that ugly end to their season last year from their memory.
Grand Rapids has a strong bantam crop coming in and enough other returning parts to be a threat. A lot will depend on how quickly the younger players develop, and to what extent they can ride DiGiuseppi. Never a team to be ignored, but they too have to prove they can rise above what they've done come playoff time these past few years.
Cloquet is the wild card in this section. After a year and a half in the toilet they came on strong at the end of last year, and with McFarlane coming back and a nice added boost from the youth program, I suspect they'll be back. They may not have the overall talent of the above three, but anyone who's followed Dave Esse's Cloquet teams over the past decade knows that what's "on paper" rarely matters. I'm very curious to see how their year plays out.
Elk River does return its very strong goalie, who gives them a chance to steal any game, but they also lost 7 of their 8 top scorers from last year, which means they have a lot of replacing to do. It's a deep program, so they may come around by the year's end, but they have plenty of questions that need answers.
Andover lost just about everything (as did St. Francis), and I believe Cambridge lost a ton of seniors, too. I don't know much about Princeton, but for all intents and purposes, this is a 5-team race.
There's an awful lot of young talent in this section, which makes it a great one to watch. The big questions revolve around whose sophomores grow up fastest. If it's East's, it'll be another methodical march to the X for the Hounds. If it's someone else's, we have the makings of a great final 4 at the DECC.
I'd say the talent pool at forward a couple years ago when Tardy, etc. was there was pretty deep...maybe that is not "recent memory". No difference in depth at East this year than most years- as usual they have plenty to choose from. I agree that on paper they should be the team to beat. I hope the section is stronger this year than it has been lately. I have a feeling it will be.

Captain practices started at FL mon. [everyone but football team] Kohls, looks good, skoog got hurt during elite but be back soon.C.J. playing football still but the kids look bigger than last year.We hope for a fun year. First time F.L. has been defending conference, but that Jr class is used to winning.

No doubt the talent pool is always pretty deep, but I think they have a chance to have 3 lines this year that are legitimate scoring threats. During the Tardy years they were a bit top-heavy in my opinion; that's not to say the lower lines weren't contributing in other ways, but they just weren't expected to share the scoring load.
A lot depends on player development, of course, particularly with the sophomores, but I like the depth on hand.

F.L. won in football last night. So the football season continues. With captain practices going on and the seven varsity football players that are missing them a thought crossed my mind. How do schools that go to state in football conduct hockey tryouts? I'm not saying this is going to happen at F.L. I think it will at Stillwater,or Cret. E.P. way or others. Can someone clue me in ? I know Rapids has gone far in football a few years back. How did they do try outs?

The team to watch by far is cloquet in this section. Cloquet returns Jack macfarlane and ben michaud who were the leading scorers last year and jack led the team as a sophomore also. Adding nolan meyer is also a huge asset to this team and they should beat east and any other contender in the sections this year. Esse constantly has a team that wont quit and this one wont be any different . Only down fall will be the D which only one has high school experience at D in chaise jokinen but with john scheuer in net they will be tough to score against. Cloquet to state this year.

It is now hockey season, time to hang up the cleats and strap on the skates, the football team will survive (or not)

So without making another thread, can I get a recap ( or update ) on how DE looks this year.? Wishing they would get the big names and numbers they used to get back in the day, is this year the year, or are they gonna be the same East that they have been the last 3-4.. A good team , but nothing spectacular or standout..
Cant wait for the game at Amsoil against Denfeld/central.. Should be a great game..
Love this time of year!

Here's a rough idea of the roster, with some of the players' credentials:
Forwards
Zac Schendel-SR-Elite League
Phil Johnson-SR
Jake Randolph-JR-Elite League/7AA Advanced 16
Dom Toninato-JR-Elite League/7AA Advanced 16/Bauer NIT
Trevor Olson-JR-7AA Advanced 17
Steven Holappa-JR-7AA Advanced 16
Ryan Lundgren-SO-National Advanced 15
Conner Valesano-SO-National Advanced 15
Alex Toscano-SO
Defense
Hunter Bergerson-SR-Elite League
Nate Repensky-JR-Elite League/7AA Advanced 17/Bauer NIT
Nate Kotter-JR-7AA Advanced 16
Miers Moore-SO-7AA Advanced 16
Goalie
JoJo Jeanetta-SR-last year's starter
Dylan Parker-SO-National Advanced 15 Alternate
Since I'm a bit distant from the situation right now I don't know how the roster will fill out completely, but there's a start. I didn't list all the advanced 15s because there are about 10 of them, and I'm not quite sure how they'll sort out.
The senior class is thin--only 4 returning players who saw significant ice time last year--but the junior class is very strong and the sophomore class might be the best in the state. A lot will depend on how well the young players develop as the year goes on, but there's a world of potential there. If they have a weakness it's the thinness on defense.

Thanks Karl. I always enjoy watching east, but I just wish they could get rebuilded to the powerhouse they were in the mid 90s- early 2000s
Winters here , hockeys back at the heritage, new arena, it's gonna be a good year
