I wasn't at the game but I heard Alex had only 20 shots on net? How does that happen when they had 8 power plays, thats equivilent of an entire period on the power play!

LF penalty kill did a very good job in the corners and on the points when alex was fortunate enough to get set in their zone, the neutral ice play was also very good. I don't understand why alot of people keep saying hemingway is better than spearl, two of the alex goals were scored off of LF defense sticks otherwise spearl didn't let out very many rebounts. Hemingway has a tendancy to let most shots rebound out. I think Hemingway is a very good goalie but not better than spearl.

I would not say that it was a poorly officiated game by any means. Little falls was more physical then alex was. Alex didnt play the body very much and that is why they did not get as many penalties. The people that are saying that it was such a poorly officiated game are obviously from little falls or are little falls supporters. Ben Hanowski got two penalties that were very warranted. There was maybe one penalty that little falls got that was a dive on an alex player. Another thing I noticed is that some of the times teams were trying to hard to take penalties. Both teams were taking dives and the crowd would errupt in rage when a little falls player dove because they thought that it was a penalty. And same with the alex fans but obviously they were out numbered. It was a good hard fought game that was not influenced by the reffing. It was the special teams coaching by little falls that one the game. They killed off the penalties very well and Alex did not seem to do anything on powerplay. To be honest they were better off when it was 5-5.

I was also surprised with the depth that little falls had. I thought that might be one of their achillies heals but they seemed to do very well. They rolled three lines for most the night and that helped them get the victory. In the the third period Alex seemed to switch up the lines and run with just two lines which hurt them. They seemed to be running tired at the end of the game and that is why little falls was able to get the late 4th goal. I was very confused to see this from the alex team because they are a very deep team. Once again it comes down to what i said in one of my previous posts. Coaching won the game for little falls.


Also just to comment on the sperl and hemingway thing. It is alright for people to say that Hemingway is better. The scouts have recognized this. He has been drafted by the Fargo team and is getting looks by WCHA collegiate teams. The thing that makes sperl look good is the supporting cast around him. Dont get me wrong he is a good goalie but he has more firepower to help him out. He will get more wins becuase his team scores more goals than that of the alex team. Hemingway will be consistant night in and night out which is shown by his numbers. Both goalies are good but hemingway is the better goalie.

Yes i will agree one of the best single a games i have ever seen, but waytashek was hit with the puck before the end of the game there was still 3 seconds on the clock. Also there was no one who kicked him from alex, and he was faking that to the extreme

I had a very good look at the clock when Waytashek got hit with the shot. There was less than a second left, but there was time on the clock yet. I'm pretty sure it was a legit shot although totally uneccessary.

Yeah I agree, the shot was after the buzzer, I mean come on I don't care how loud it is in there you can hear that buzzer, it was something that should of never happened. The officiating was horrible and the skinny ref should be put in the corner with a dunce hat on. Though I really don't know about not shaking hands at the end, this might just carry on to the next time LF & Alex play.

Oh ya, Hano does some amazing things on the ice, each game I watch it seems that he gets better and better, which is going to be a scary ordeal for the next few teams they face!

Wow officeman no disrespect but in the approximately one hundred games I have officiated over the years I have never had a game like that one, they were terrible!! A believe me this will be the first and last time I say anything more about officiating it is a very difficult job. And hemmingway I agree is a very good goalie and he did try out for fargo this summer but they went with another kid I think it was the mankato west goalie and he is very good. Alex has a good supporting cast also but what is spearls record over the years against alec? I would like to see that stat. It really doesn't matter if there was a second on the clock or not, if your not shooting at the goalie it's a bush league play

Gopher-I would love to know if you are an official or have read through all the books those refs had and know the rules inside and out like they do.

Oldskates- from the sounds of it you are older( judging by your name) and may not be as acustomed to some of the new rule changes like younger(meaning age not experience wise) officials are, in that case rules have changed and have become much more strict (sticks, holding, interference etc...). Given that it was a HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY game of course the refs will let them play to a certain extent as long as it doesn't get out of hand. You can finish checks! Office man said Alex wasn't as physical which could be why they didn't get as many penalties. Second senario- 100 games really isn't that many for you to be acting like the "judge" of all officials now if you were to say you are a 30 year reffing vet than I would believe every word you were to say about the game but your not. Me thinks that you are just a pissed off LF fan or player who didn't get to go out on the PP because that's the only time you get. Now unless you are an officiating guru that reviews these refs than I would say your opinion would have some credibilty but until then your opinion is just as bias as anyone elses.

For the record I have been reffing 5 years and know my rule book like the back of my hand, and come from a family of refs who know their rules also.

And by no means, from what I hear, the officials calls didn't decide the game.

NippenTopChed08 that was very well said. You are never going to please everyone at a hockey game. Its part of the nature of the game.

Goopherpuckplayer- I dont know how alex takes over as the cheap team in the section when little falls was the one getting called for all the penalties. But good logic behind that

Also to ou oldskates about the hemingway issue. He did not try out for that team. He has been drafted by that team and will be going to play for them in there next season. He wanted to come back to play his senior year. Somebody told you wrong or you completely mae that up. Another thing about the spearls record. He has a better supporting cast around him. You have to look at save % and the competition that the two teams play throughout the years. Hemingway has a better save % and is being looked at by top Div1 schools. Spearl i believe has got nothing. Scouts focus more on save % and the teams that you are playing as opposed to wins.

Bruce you make a great point about save % and teams played. An average goalie can have a .097 save % and play bad teams and have that save % only because they are bad teams or he has a great supporting cast. I think it's the goalie that has a .090 save % and plays extremely hard teams, loses because he doesn't have the supporting cast like the other goalie. The latter of the two is probably a much more skilled goalie and gets peppered every night and still manages to have a .090 save %.

That whole scenario is hypothetically speaking if course.

I keep hearing that hemmingway is being looked at by top end D1 schools, but who? the U of M, North Dakota, Boston College, Michigan? I know he is a very talented goaltender but I was just curious.

I know Sperl has a better suppoting cast but he hasn't lost to Alex as a varsity goaltender, I think he is like 6-0 against them. You think alex could beat him once out of six times maybe it will be next time who knows.

OK here is the breakdown for Sperl And Hemingway.

Sperl 08/09 season:

Hemingway catches your eye (as a scout or coach).
The classic tender, athletic and sharp. Impressive in try-out/camp settings.
Not that Sperl doesn't. But Hemingway has done a nice job of getting "out there" and getting known.

Wow nippen i never thought of looking at the new rule changes what a concept and i never said the penalties that were called were bad they were only called on one team. as for bruces comment about finishing the check, one LF kid received a penalty for that too even though the puck was in his feet. I am not a disgruntled fan i do like little falls and they won right ? i enjoy a good physical game. Nippen you are assuming the refs are as passionate about the game as you are, not everyone is, some are in it for the money and really don't spend the extra effort to really learn the game.

Obviously they are in it for the money, but they also wouldnt be doing it if they didnt love the game. And obviously they have to spend the time to know and understand the rules in order to pass their officiating exam. And obviously the refs are not supposed to be biased but maybe they were, from the sounds of it though Alex was a much less physical team=less chances to bring the stick up to the face=less chance of a high sticking call=less penalties. or you could look at it this way Less hitting=less taking runs at people who dont have the puck= less interference calls. I just get really upset with people who think a game was poorly officiated because one team got 8 penalties and the other got 1 and they think its because the ref was "out to get them" which is 99% of the time very untrue. They treat this job just like any other profession.

Another thing, Obviously 2 people cannot be everywhere at once or see everything at once. That is one of the "downfalls" of being an official. You can be perfectly positioned and be doing exactly what you are supposed to be doing and miss a call because of an obstruction of view. It happens.

I didn't think this game was very physical at all.... there were a couple of big hits, but not much. Also, not much roughing type plays or penalties called.... I think the biggest complaint (from me) was the amount of interference away from the puck that was allowed

Bruce, acutally, Hemingway DID try out for the Fargo team. He would have been one of 3 goalies and decided to stay in school, you are close, but again, incorrect. Keep trying.
