Sports are not about getting as many kids involved as possible, they're about winning.
I disagree with you, sports at the college and professional levels are about winning because of the amount of money involved. At the High School level its about participation and winning is the bonus for those that have worked hard and have the skill to play at a top level. I miss the old days when everyone stayed at home and played with the kids they grew up with and you never knew what school was gonna make a run for the State Trophy but on the flip side more kids have the opportunity to play at the High School level and experience playing on a Varsity team. That is a GOOD thing, and if you feel differently then you are being selfish.

My son has played hockey since he was 5 years old like so many other hockey players. He has worked hard and has always given his best. He is a decent player now and plays U16 as a sophomore. He has a good chance to make JV next year and has high hopes of making Varsity his senior year. If a few of the top kids make a move to another school it might make the difference in making the Varsity team and getting to experience playing hockey at that level. It would mean the world to him, he has worked every bit as hard as the other players but not everyone can be a TOP player. Just to play on the Varsity team even if it is 3rd or 4th line would mean so much to him and I know there are a ton of players out there just like him. So more opportunities for more players is a GOOD thing. NUFF SAID

Unless something has changed in the last week, Mattson is still at AHA no Ann Arbor.
Who is to say that these kids would stay in their cities anyway. Maybe they would have transferred to anothe public. This topic is going to go down the wrong way and needs to stop.

Roseau would have Ness and Lee this year and be number 1.
Have we decided about which Lakeville gets to claim schroeder?

Hockman21, aren't five of those Champlin boys at Breck? They don't seem to be tearing up the Class A schools what makes you think they would make a difference at AA?

That is true, I personally got a chance as a freshmen because a goalie went to Cedar Rapids. But what says i wouldn't have still made JV that year, how much better could i have gotten had he stayed and I could have spent the entire season being mentored by him. It is a vicious circle, but i also put some thought into what schools would be better without private schools and Jr's, and i also threw open enrollment in it too. This isn't in order.

Sibley- Good youth program, loses alot of players to Cretin Derham Hall, St. Thomas and some to Hill Murray.

Duluth East- loses alot to Marshall

Richfield- Loses good players to AHA

Woodbury-Is already really good, but think about the kids that go to Hill

There are alot more, but i dont have enough time to list them. Maybe hockey could be better, but it also could be worse.

High School sports - what a mixed message. When schools are looking to pass a new levy to get taxpayer money, you would think that the sports are creating all of these opportunities for kids to participate. When we have kids who are good enough to play, then it's all about winning. If we have a kid who is a low bubble player, then we push for the sports to "give them all a chance" and have everyone participate. And then when our kids are out of it, winning is #1 again.

AND, if it's all about winning, why are we so concerned with players transferring schools?

It's a set of arguements without a possible winner. I just wanted to throw out a new thought. I'm not looking for a fight, but enjoy hearing what everyone thinks.

just something to consider, in the last 4 years east has lost the following players to marshall

the kozlak brothers, scott is now at airforce
the connoly brothers, Jack at umd Chris an BU
the Mahoney brothers
the Paul brothers
Dano Jacques
Derek Randall
Mark Laskowski
Kevin Jones
Matt Letorneau
Andrew Ritts
Matt Dodd

plus i think its fair to say that ian guzzo, bob gutch, zach mausolf, and probably landon olson would have transfered to east as well

the also lost keegan to jr's last year but other than that they ususaly do a pretty good job of keeping their players at home.

they would have been a pretty scary team if marshall wernt around

Duluth East is just as bad as a private school. How many kids have transferred in from another community just to go to duluth east. I bet they have at least one or two this year from the iron range and the same amount from superior.

So dont get upset when kids go to Marshall, because East is just as bad.

Hey, if someone transfers from Superior, the reason is simple...to escape Superior. Image

I think it depends on who you ask, if was only about winning why play? Most lose, in hockey alone there are 156 schools playing, no more than 10-15 have a chance to win a title. Luverne has 0 shot of winning a state title yet the kids there play hockey, and continue to go out for hockey knowing that, the school board continues to allow hockey, etc.

To the kid on the team or probably more correctly the parents of the kid on the team it may be about winning but to most involved in sports it's about participation because that's what you remember. As a longtime official I can say a lot about the places and schools where it's all about winning, the fact is most of those places lose more than they should. The places that treat sports as a life lesson seem to do better. There is a reason Rushford and Caledonia have top teams in all of its sports, why Lakeville succeeds despite how many kids they lose to "winning" programs, why Albert Lea continually feeds top wrestling and hockey teams from such a small school and why some others with all their talent don't.

Joe Cure, Connor Polachek, all the Kaisers, Ryan Lemere. From when I was at AHA, Mark Degidio. Now state your point? Why did they leave Bloomington to play at AHA?

Because Trebil recruited them to go to AHA

Hopefully your defination of far away is a few miles. What do you do when your greyhounds travel into the abyss to play the spartans?

I would have to disagree hockeyhair. Ever wonder why there is so much fog over lake superior? God felt sorry for the "soup town" residents so he decided to rest their eyes every once in a while from the once beautiful hill which the duluthians so rudely invaded and corrupted.
