Mike Lee would have to be my first pick to. Yea he sees few shots every game but when the team needs him to step up in close games he does. And he has never lost a varsity hockey game. He is right around 30-0 and has obvoiusly played a few toughs games example the state tourney last year.

Too bad Hjelle decided to make the jump otherwise this thread would already be over and done with.

Hill has the 27th toughest schedule according to PS2 rankings. Doesn't look like they have too many "horrible" opponents on their schedule.

Mike Lee Argument:

I believe only a senior can win this award. That means he should not be involved in this topic.

I believe just Mike Lee and No. Most goalies play juniors first. I think the only goalie playing D1 this year from last year's senior class is Reid Ellingson (Cloquet) for Northern Michigan. That stat could be wrong, however.

anyone know when this is announced? and how many goalies are invited to the banquet as finalists?

There isn't a banquet to present the award. The winner attends the Mr. Hockey Banquet and is honored there. I believe it is announced very late in the season.

2005-Alec Richards-3 year starter for Yale.
2004-Matt Lundin-two years at Maine and is now playing for Mercyhurst
2003-Jon Anderson-two years for the UConn
2002-Josh Johnson-four years at UMD and is rising star in the ECHL (South Carolina)
2001-Eric Aarnio-starting goalie in his fourth year at University of Nebraska Omaha
2000-Jake Brant-played four years at UND
1999-Adam Laaksonen-played at St John’s (Mn) University
1998-Adam Coole-played two years at UMD, forced to transfer to St. Cloud beat MUD
1997-Kyle Kolquist-played four years for Notre Dame
1996-Karl Goehring-played four years at UND, playing for Syracuse Crunch in AHL
1995-Todd Kelzenberg-played two years at Minnesota State

They may not have all made in pro hockey, but each had a free ride at a scholarship (don't know about Yale). One had a pre-med on his mind, most had opportunities to play D1 hockey, and one is in his senior year at Yale. I call that a success.

i would be in agreement with Benedict from Burnsville but Mike becker gets the majority of reps over at burnssville. with the season coming down the stretch it would not shock me to see benedict play a lot more as he is getting hot.

If it comes down to straight ability and talent...career wise

My top 3.

1. Yumusaklar
2. Morgan
3. Phillippi/Cachetta

the only thing yumusaklar has against him is the fact that he's never had a winning season. Phillipi, Morgan, and Caschetta have all had multiple winning seasons.


sorry if it's already been covered, but what factors play into deciding who wins it? career achievements? senior year only? anybody know?

yeah, thats the hard part, how is it scored? yumusaklar hasnt had a winning season, but is it his fault? he has had numerous 50+ save performances in his career..the other goalies havent..its all based on how good your team is in front of you....Thats why I say, talent alone, and Ive seen all the top SR goalies play...Id give it to yumusaklar..but I dont know what the criteria is

If this is an award for goalies on strong dominate teams then of course Cashetta wins but if this award is for the accomplishments of an individual goal tender, continued skill development (CANI) and relevance to team success then my vote is for Morgan.

Morgan is a transplant from Mississippi who came to MN as a Bantam.
After a successful single A season in Northfield where he was the starter his sophmore year posting very impressive numbers, he made the jump to a AA Rosemount team that was struggling with its identity. (a very young team, 2nd year Coach and the loss of two of its stars (Sainty-Walters). An impressive move on Morgans part as many talented players seek out high profile private schools (STA/AHA/Blake) rather then the rigorous sechedule of any Lake conference team.

The transition was tough and the sechedule was one of the toughest in MN hockey that season. The Irish went head to head with the toughest teams in the state. Morgans personal numbers suffered but that is what developement should look like and this season he came back for more.

Irish have developed well as a team and as a team they are enjoying an impresive year, early on due to tremendous offensive talent but of late (since x-mas) due to very impressive goal tending.

It is one thing to be a power house team like Edina or Roseau or AHA in years past, but it is quite another to develope into a top team through hard work ethic and heart. The story in Rosemount is what High School Hockey is all about.

There are many fine senior goaltenders competing this season but as I stated in and earlier post my vote is Morgan and I hope I've helped to make his case.

agreed, they are both on display tommorrow night against each other..Im still trying to get the wife to let me go haha

In the end I think Joe Phillippi will win the award. A lot of us can agree though that he isn't deserving. I would like to see cashetta, morgan, or yumu win though.

IMO cashetta letting in 5 goals against wayzata takes him out of the running

I always get a kick out of how misinforming the Star Trib is when listing goalie stats.

Hakan and Morgan are both have over 900 minutes and are not listed due to gaa.

Hakan at 2.94 and morgan at 2.70

Both these guys have just above a 90 Save % which means they are seeing 29.4 (Hakan) and 27 (Morgan) Shots per game respectivly.


Cashetta and Phillipi are listed
they too have over 900 Min

Cashetta with a 1.74 Gaa and Phillipi with a 1.59 Gaa
Coupled with save % Cashetta at 91.9 and Phillipi at 92 indicates they are seeing 19 to 20 shot respectivly pergame.

While these guys certianly deserve recognition they are listed next to guys who have played less then 500 Minutes and have seen less the 300 shots.

Makes no sence and neglects the Metros top performers.
