That's true, it will be exciting. We can't overlook the fact that there is no guarantee that these two teams will meet in the finals either. Hibbing and Virginia are more than capable of putting a good game together in the semifinals. The four and five seed quarterfinal game should be competetive as well.

Here's an interesting tid-bit of info:
In the past 5 years, the #1 and #2 seeded teams did not both make it to the section championship game 51% of the time.

And 35% of the time, the #1 seed does not advance to the state tournament.

My point is seeding really doesn't mean a whole lot.

Another thing I found interesting thats a little more related to this section. The last time Virginia was eliminated from the section playoffs by someone other than Hibbing, it was 2002 against Mesabi East. All of those losses were in the semifinals. The way things are shaping up this year, it doesn't look like they will meet unless they both make it to the finals.

You folks are forgetting about the effect of the flat tire. And, unfortunately, I think that's where the Wild Horses are heading. They're holding on too tight lately and their weakness have come to light; examples are their recent close calls with teams that simply shouldn't have been that close (Greenway, LOW, Virginia). I think the next two and a half weeks will show what I. Falls is made of ( Denfeld, Greenway, Hibbing, Grand Rapids, Roseau). As much as I love those nostalgia trips the Purple and Gold give us when they make the big show, I don't think they've got "IT" anymore when it comes to winning championships, and haven't had "IT" for some thirty years. I'm not ready to deliver the hardware to Marshall either, but my travels have shown that I. Falls needs an inspiration injection to make the matchup we're all hoping for at the Section final.

What was '95 then, since they haven't had "IT" for some thirty years :?:

Those close results you speak of are not what they may seem. Virginia is a good team - They have beaten Denfeld, Little Falls, Hibbing, Rochester Mayo, and lost to Hermantown in OT. Greenway is a very good skating team that just doesn't have good goaltending and has trouble putting the puck in the net. They are not a cake-walk team like their record may indicate. LOW was a fluke. Their goalie single-handedly kept that game close. That does happen from time-to-time in hockey.

As far as the next two and a half weeks goes. Yes there are some tough games coming up. They probably won't win them all, either. Roseau jumps out instantly. They have already knocked off Denfeld. They should be able to get by Greenway and Hibbing. Grand Rapids will be a test and the IRC conference will be on the line. But even if they lose, Roseau and Grand Rapids are AA schools and are not in 7A.

I'm not saying they are going to walk through the 7A playoffs. To say that would be absurd. They will have to play well to win in the semifinals and finals. But there is no reason to think they can't win. Especially since they haven't really lost at all this season.

The Falls didn't lose to Hermantown in overtime. They won that game. Their one loss was to Fort Frances.

When I talk about " IT ", I'm talking about a consistant competitive will to win. The talent to qualify and the heart to get it done. There was a time when getting to State meant going through the Falls one way or another. There was a bit of a stigma to them. Haven't seen that in a long time with any consistancy. Yeah 95 happened, but short competitive stretches once every 20 years isn't "IT". Why they aren't a perennial powerhouse every year anymore like there northern brothers in Roseau, Warroad and East may make an interesting new thread for the Falls residents using this board.

Every 20 years huh? I believe that the Falls went to state in 2000 and 2002 and should have gone in 2003. After that they had a drop off yes, but I wouldn't exactly call that 20 years.

They aren't having one semi-final in Grand Rapids this year?

MSHSL site says they are. GR & Hibbing - flipped depending on where Hibbing fits in.

I don't think The Falls will ever have "IT" again by your definition. Two words. "Open Enrollment". They will never benefit from it. They don't have the power to persuade families from other areas to relocate there. High School hockey isn't what it used to be. Now its all about getting noticed by colleges, so I'm going to play for a team that'll make it to state every year.

Hibbing beating I Falls tonight sure puts a twist on things.. Is Hibbing picking up some momentum or Falls showing their true form?

Both. Hibbing gets a solid defensmen back, Sandstrom is on fire as of late, and "Hibbing being Hibbing", meaning they start to play like they should around the last leg of the season. Don't get me wrong folks, I-Falls is a really talented team, but I think they hit their peak to early. Also watchin that goalie tonight makes me wonder how far they'll get with teams getting 30 plus shots and crashing the net.

I Really dont think Fall's Defense is all that its purposed to be really, allowing a team like Hibbing to get 30 shots, now dont get me wrong, hibbing is a very talented team, but i think Falls hit their peak and now this loss will kill them and it wouldnt surprise me to see falls lose 2-3 more games this year and even not make in past the Semi Finals in the Playoffs.

Agreed. I think Hibbing is much better than their record shows, and wouldn't be surprised to see them in the final game of section play, or even off to state.
