have to agree with puck nutz, villeneauve is a crazy kid, and if he does play it wont be long before he will get suspended. Any word on MV, I swear they might actually be decent

FLAKE has a pretty good goalie and Jake Kogler proved himself to be a contender on the ELITE I team this year........why isn't FLAKE on the map?

I agree moberg was solid last year as a sophomore, FLAKE has the potential to cause some problems for the top teams this year.

Are they deep enough to go every game? Or will they just have 2 lines to throw at teams and use the 3rd line sparingly?

I got the chance to see kogler during the elite league and I would agree that, yes, he is a talented player, but a single goal scorer won't get you far in the SEC. If I remember correctly, Forest Lake graduated 13 seniors last year, not necessarily a strong senior class, but the core of the varsity team none the less

Pucknutz - What kind of traditons did they get rid of they have always been pretty solid at the younger ages. What changed?

Interesting. My sister lives in Hastings and has a son who plays at the youth level so I always have tried to pay attention to Hastings a little bit. Shw was telling me that the youth group was starting to do soem different things with training and stuff to keep up with other programs. I guess we will see if it works. She said that it was still very old school, but was starting to change a little.

They changed up the in-house league and now have an A Squirt team.

Interesting don't all programs have an A Squirt team? Why is that so different?

They used to have a tournament team. But all of the kids skated in the in-house league. The in-house league would spread the good coaches around and more kids got a better start. They would select the tourney team in Dec. and take the best kids.

Now they just skate an A team and the rest play in-house which takes 5-6 of the dads with hockey knowledge away from the other kids that might improve with better coaching and better kids to chase.

It worked well for Hastings due to the size of the association, now you have a group that is only worrying about their team and not the whole age group.

The problem is not the youth program. The problem is that Russ Welch does not do a thing for the youth program. The A squirt and A Pee Wee teams this year will be alot better than they have been in the past. The reason that these two teams will be better is because they have a couple of dads that do not want to be part of the 4-22 High School sesaons. They have kids that have left the program only because Russ Welch is there. Just look at the players that have left there in the last 4 years. Taylor Chorney (probably the best 22 year old D-Man in the Country) Micheal Girgen (Second rounder to Pittsburgh) Derek Stepan(Full ride to Wisconsin) Charlie Raskob (Captain at Holy Angels) They are leaving for one reason. You guessed it. The quicker Russ Welch leaves the better off this program will be.

I have "heard" so I could be mistaken but does anyone know about mounds view's goalie situation? I heard that both varsity goalie's went to juniors instead of playing there senior year? should be a interesting year if they did lose them.

MV lost one of their goalies to the Hudson Crusaders.
The other, Tony Civello, played with the St. Paul Lakers for about a month before quiting to play high school.......so they will have one returning varsity goalie. the other will most likely be evangelist off there JV unless one of the sophs trying out can beat him out.

Charlie Walters colum todays said that Derek Stepan from Hastings is projected to go in the first round. Could not happen to a greater kid. Congrats, and I wish I was going to watch this kid as a Gopher. Badgers stole one here. Another SEC player moving on.

hockey nut, I dont get it.

Russ Welch was avery successful coach in Cowtown; going to state tournaments. Then was very successful at Hastings when he had the horses with Taffe, Welches and so on.

Why is it his fault? Did he forget how to coach?

I remember Stepan as a sophomore at Hastings as a very good offensive player, who didn't much like to come back and help out in his own end. Must have improved his game at SSM.

He won at SSP when it was Region 4. The Region was the worst in the state. He won at Hastings with hands down the best group of athletes ever to graduate. Taffe (Gophers) Welch (Gophers) Tharp (Gophers) Derek Garcia (Secect 17 top 51) Adam Gerlach (Mankato State) Ben Utech (Indy Colts in the NFL) Dustin Vogelsang (Starting Qurterback River Falls). My 6 year old could of coached this group. All these kids also won the Baseball title that year, and I believe they were also in the Football Title game. He has done nothing for the hockey program but piss and moan. Call the local youth program, they will tell you all about him.

Nobody wins without players.

He has had to have coached 8-9 teams to the State Tournament.

I don't know how many guys have that many but its probably not a lot.

Id put Woodbury over Highland for the parking.

HAHA, have to agree that aldrich is a great minnesota arena, and also that shoreview (MV's arena) is terrible, after playing there for 3 years it got quite nippy in practice and just waiting around for games. I would think Hastings arena would be up higher though. It has a great atmosphere to play in with the wood ceilings and seamless glass.

Aldrich...although old and rundown...still is great to watch hockey at...also holds many memories for hockey fans!

It's a great arena because all the seats are good to watch the game from. But the best feature is that it holds enough people to have a big game at. I'm tired of arenas that are having big games and can fit all 300 of us into the seats. I know that's not why arenas were built, but it's a shame going to watch a game at Highland...

I was thinking the same thing as I sat in Aldrich with about 150 people at the HM-Moorhead game last year.

Aldrich is a great place to have a game and I agree with Sparlimb about Highland.

It would be a pain but it would be nice if games could be moved around to accomodate the fans. Play big rivalry games at Aldrich or even the Fair Grounds and send the not so big game over to Highland. Probably not doable.
