Good evening-

Any recruiting news out there for the Dogs?
I asked Boblee and he even was a little surprised there hasn't more activity from the UMD camp. I know they lost out on Connolly and Tyler Barnes from articles i have read. :?:

Anyway, hope someone has heard something no matter how small. They need to get some skilled and top-end forwards to end their dismal offensive attack. :(

Thanks for the feekback,

Are Sandelin's Assistant Coaches working hard on recruiting? Are they being seen regularily at the Elite League, recent USHL showcase, Canada? Are they making phone calls and sending emails to the kids that have visited?

As for who they are recruiting, I would imagine they are going to keep that close to the vest until deals are signed.

Breakout -

I cannot answer any of those questions...but, you raise all sorts of good questions. For me, I thought they would be more active early on on this early recruiting cycle because of the # of holes they need to improve. They have been 9th place for two straight years and I would think that should signal that changes need to be made.

On the other hand, they maybe very active and we just don't hear anything about it. I just think something would happen soon and we start to hear about possible names that they are targeting. Most fan bases have blogs and other communication modes that are talking about this stuff but, UMD fans really don't know what is going on. Being so removed from the pulse of the program, one cannot help to feel a little isolated and unsure of the future. Good points Breakout nonetheless.

End of rant. Later

I know of a few players that took unofficial visits to UMD this past summer. But they are likely going to end up elsewhere.

UMD is a hard sell to recruits these days. I am sure their coaching staff is trying their best but it isn't easy when there have been a lot of negatives going on (both on and off the ice).

One good thing is their goaltending situation should be in very good hands with Hjelle. He had a very good start to his USHL season this past weekend and he seemed pretty happy about it yesterday. He is a good kid and should be a quality starter for UMD. I think he'll keep UMD in a lot more games than what they have had in net in recent years.

How would you guys rate recruiting right in their own back yard for kids up North?

Thanks

Hello guys -

Gopherblog I appreciate your thoughts. I am excited about the addition of Hjelle but, as you know, they need Hjelle caliber recruits to become more regular than they are right now. I understand that UMD will most likely never out recruit the big schools - U/M, Wisco, No Dak, BC, etc.

But, it would be nice to compete at least against St Cloud and Kato. Recently, it seems like they are staying ahead of Kato but, St Cloud has really surged under Motzko. I am hopeful we can have that surge sooner than later. Anyway, thank you again.

Stealth - i like the local kids that they brought in - huttel, Bordson and Schmidt should be quality players. i don't really care where they come from but, I just want high-end talent to say "yes" to UMD a little more. But, like Gopherblog said, they are having problems no doubt.

Take care,

Money, thanks for the feed back.
Seams like the St. Cloud commitments have been media hyped. Do you think this is more for the kid or the school?

Thats what i just came on here to post about. There is more out of state recruitment now and fewer and fewer of the top recruits are finding their way to Duluth.

Hello all-

Just like any college sport...much of the success of a program stems from recruiting efforts and getting guys to buy into your system. Two - three years ago, UMD had some good momentum following their 04 Frozen Four apprearance in Boston. But, three lackluster years later they are struggling. That is why this year is important for Sandelin and Co. They should be on the hot seat come next spring if improvement isn't made.

Just my opinion.
I am hoping they can get some guys like T Johnson from WBL or a Drew Olson from Brainard to commit. There a ton of other guys too but, just giving some names. These are good kids that aren't superstars that should be on our radar. Take care.

I think Jake Jonhson would look good wearing a bulldog jersey. Hopefully UMD is smart and gets this kid. A damm good hockey player.

He is overage to play in the junior leagues. Born in 1986. Last season was the last year 86's could play juniors.
