I still think the quality of the teams has gone up over the past 20-15-10 years despite the early departures. Even without those choosing to leave early Minnesota still produces more D1 hockey players than any other sport here, by far. It's just that today the vast majority of Minnesota players do not go straight from high school to D1 - but that's not something unique to Minnesota.

As to the State Tourney losing some of its luster, this is undoubtedly true. But I don't believe this has much if anything to do with the relatively few players choosing to leave early. There are broader factors at work here, and attendance at high school games in general is way down from what it used to be. Case in point: when my brother played for Henry Sibley back in the 70's and they faced South St. Paul in a section final, they had to move the game from Wakota to the Civic Center downtown, and they ended up nearly filling the place. Also, compare the attendance levels of the Section 2 and 6 finals double header at Mariucci today vs. just five years ago - no comparison.

You are correct it's not unique and frankly even a bunch of them that did go straight to D1 from H.S. probably should have played juniors. I know as a Badger fan that some of the MN kids that we've gotten straight from high school could have definitely used atleast one season in juniors before we got them and it's showing in our record this year (Joseph LaBate is a great example of this. He is now basically an average to disappointing senior whereas a year or two of juniors he'd only be a sophmore or junior this year and he could have high expectations still..... Besse is another such example, should have never came straight to D1 at his size, he needed a year of juniors for sure)

Congrats to all the boys on the list. Always a bummer for those not included and those injured or playing injured. Really surprised to see Jacob Olsen off. Still believe more D should have been included this year, but I have proven more often than not, to be wrong. At least I tied Dilks as he too thought 5 D not 3.

Motzko's turn this year. Maybe he will land Tufto and half the candidates.

Definitely a D1 bound player. It depends who has the need most. SCSU already has a bunch of forward recruits of that type and of a similar age, but it's still a possibility.

Roth has missed the majority of the season due to injury

Further remarks by Chris Dilks:

"Today the Minnesota Wild, in conjunction with the Minnesota Minutemen, announced the ten finalists for this year's Minnesota Mr. Hockey, given annually to the state's top senior high school hockey player.

This year was a little different in that I was given the opportunity to participate in the nomination process. The final ballot didn't exactly match mine--six of the seven names I voted for ended up on the list--but I can't argue with any of the selections made. For the record, my submitted ballot had a few names that weren't on my preseason list."

The issue with the badgers this year is that their team stinks.

Could you imagine how bad they would be if they sent their two leading point scorers to juniors and they each had one less year of college hockey experience? Just cause they played Juniors, that does not mean they would be better this year, I would argue they would be a little bit worse in present time.

I'm hoping this isn't a serious injury...Kobe is a great kid as well as being an outstanding hockey player...what is the nature of the injury? I'd heard something about it being lower body...is that accurate?

Surprised that Jake Olson and Seamus Donahue were both left off the final list. Suppose somebody had to be sacrificed to get 3 from LN on. Feel a bit bad actually for McNeely who probably had the most hype earliest of all. Olson would have been the easy IMO pick since STA had Tufto and Versich. Seems like the winner is generally a forward favored again with the 7F/3D split. I think Malmquist walks away with it this year along with a 3rd state championship.

Btw and since I'm to lazy to try and research was Nick Bjugstad a finalist his junior year since he graduated HS after his junior season?

He'd already made the decisions to accelerate his class and was thus officially a senior. Same for Aaron Ness a couple years earlier.

Was he a nominee? I remember he was a man amongst boys even being technically a junior. Forgot about Ness being in a similar boat. Both tremendous talents at that age.

Yes. He won it in 2010.

The top two for most people seem to be Jaremko and Malmquist so I will break them down a little bit.

Starting with Jaremko

Through 24 games he has 21 goals and 41 assist equaling 62 points.
2.583 points a game on average.

Best Games point wise for Jake
12/02/14: 7 points in an 11-4 win at Maple Grove (3G 4A)
12/06/14: 6 points in an 11-2 win against Champlin Park (0G 6A)
12/20/14: 4 points in a 5-4 win against Grand Rapids (3G 1A)
Four other 4 point games against Irondale, Osseo, Forest Lake and Andover.

Points against Top teams (Edina, EP, BSM, Wayzata and Blaine twice)
In 6 games 4G 7A= 11 points

Against good to middle of the pack teams. (MG, Anoka, Andover, Grand Rapids, Forest Lake, Centennial, Duluth East and Osseo)
In 12 games 12G 21A=33 Points

Against the bottom group of teams (Champlin, Spring Lake Park, Coon Rapids, Totino and Irondale)
In 6 games 5G 13A= 18 Points

Worst stretch:

In the month of January, Jake had 9 points (3G 6A) in 8 games, which included the only times being held scoreless against Andover and Coon Rapids. However, he did post a three point night against Blaine in that time.

Remaining Game: Armstrong/Cooper

Now for Malmquist

Through 23 games he has 23 goals and 37 assists for a total of 60 points.
2.608 points a game on average.

Best games point wise for Dylan
12/19/14: 6 points in a 6-3 win against Elk River (2G 4A)
12/18/14: 5 points in a 8-3 win against Grand Rapids (2G 3A)
12/20/14: 4 points in a 4-3 OT win against Eden Prairie (1G 3A)
Three other 4 point games against Holy Family, Cretin and Holy Angels.

Points against top teams (Holy Family, Wayzata, Lakeville North, Elk River, Eden Prairie, Hill-Murray and White Bear Lake)

In 11 Games 14G 16A= 30 Points

Against good to middle of the pack teams ( Centennial, CDH, Grand Rapids, Burnsville, Minnetonka, Duluth East, Hopkins and Holy Angels)

In 10 Games 7G 19A= 26 Points

Against the bottom tier teams (Champlin Park and Rosemount)

In 2 Games 2G 2A= 4 Points

Worst stretch

11/22-12/04
In 5 games Malmquist had 8 points (3G 5A) but if you take out his 4 point game on 12/02 against CDH, it is 4 points in 4 games against Wayzata, Champlin Park, Centennial and Lakeville North. Malmquist had one point in each of these four games, which is important to note because he was only held below two points one other time in the season (12/31/14 against Hill 0G 1A)

Remaining Games: Minnetonka and EP

Something interesting that I found was in Centennial's three games against these two, they only gave up three points to them. Of course Centennial was outscored 14-1 in those three games, but still.

Im in Edina guy so you can call me biased if you want, but I think Malmquist should win. He has been more consistent and I like how his best game was against Elk River. He also has performed really well when playing against the top teams. His special team play is one of the best if not the best in the state and he is great in his own zone.
Malmquist has a chance to have more points if both maintains their pace. Jaremko playing Armstong in his final game could get him a large amount, though.

I know many people don't think Malmquist should win because Wait is right with him in terms of points, but when you look at the box score, they basically assist each other whenever the other one scores. If having strong chemistry with another talented player keeps people from voting for him, I would be disappointed. Also, Malmquist's 2nd best game point wise came when Wait had to sit out for a previous game ejection, so he has the ability to do it by himself.

Regardless who wins, they are both extremely talented and it will be well deserved.

P.S
I got the information off the Hub so if any of the info is wrong than I apologize.

Green 4:

Good analysis

Would be a difficult vote to cast.

Malmquist has really closed the gap to even, after starting from a ways back production wise and early season perception wise.

Elk River had one Mr. Hockey winner already, Edina none. Maybe if some voters see things being so close, they might think its the Hornets year.

Question: how close is Malmquist to Dan Carlsons all time scoring record for Edina?

Jaremko had 6 points tonight against Armstrong/Cooper giving him 68 to finish off the regular season.
Malmquist had 3 points tonight against Minnetonka giving him 63 with one game against Eden Prairie left. He did have one game already with 5 points against EP, but seems unlikely he will catch Jaremko.

I think it is a long time (if ever again) that we see a 100+ point season by a player in AA with a difficult schedule like Kloos did in 2012. Special player.

As for the other forwards on the list.
St. Thomas Plays Holy Family Saturday. Tufto has 63, Versich 57, Jack 51, and Nick 47 play Shakopee, Bowen ended season at 50.

Green 4,

I think Malmquist must now be 2nd? in all time leading Edina scorers at about 174?, and somewhere around 16? short of recordholder Dan Carlson. I assume Dans number of around 190? included extra season although I couldnt be sure.
You could check me on my figures.

Anyway, I guess its theoretically possible Dylan could catch him if they go all the way to the state final, but realistically that many more points is probably not in the cards. He might come close. Anyway, congrats to Dylan on a much higher potent offensive season than I thought he could ever achieve.
