That being said, I still don't think Luverne is going to make it out of this section. Willmar is a very skilled team with great coaches. Coach Tollefson gets these boys working hard all year and come playoff time they will be the most prepared team in the section.

My rankings so far:

1. Willmar
2. Luverne
3. New Ulm
4. Hutch
5. Litch
6. Marshall
7. Windom
8. Morris Benson
9. Worthington
10. Redwood Valley
11. Fairmont
Please don't lump me in with the Scout, my opinion is that the top 3 teams in the section are Luverne, Hutch, and New Ulm. I went on record a couple of years ago that Luverne gained respect by making it to the section finals. But if that is upsetting to you I'm sorry.
The top three teams in the section are NOT in fact Luverne, Hutch and New Ulm. it is Luverne, Willmar and new Ulm. Hutch is overrated and has a sub par goaltender in Allan (sp?) I see New Ulm lighting him up for at least 4 tonight. This section comes down to what goaltender is playing well at the end of the year heading into sections. As of right now, I see Meyer for Luverne and Goosman for Willmar being the front runners. Willmar just beat a good Fergus Falls team. Also interested to see what the seating capacity at Blue Mound is. I know Hutch is around 700, Willmar is approximately 3,000, Litch is around 600 and NU is around a grand.

Good game tonight in Hutch. I see NU's forwards finally exploding for some points and Kraus finding his stride in net. Look for Davis and Reinharts (younger brother of Kyle?) to shut down Hutch's top line. After that, Hutch falls off in depth way too much to keep up with NU.

I see the Litch vs. Redwood game being a blow out. Not much to talk about here. Look for Stromberg to have a nice night for Litch. He seems to look like a good player for them.

Marshall vs. Windom is the game I will be most interested in tonight. With Litch and Hutch both blowing out Windom, it will really show how Marshall compares to the other two this year. I see this being a 5-3 game, going in Marshall's favor. Depending what goalie plays for Windom. If Monson plays, this game could get out of hand. He struggles to make a solid first save, and kind of flops after that.

Hoping for some good games tonight with seeding implications early in the year!

Good additions to the game notes will be interesting to see line match ups tonight. Dont forget Hutch gets last change see if they use it or not. Hutch is a deeper team then you give them credit for and I dont think they are over rated by any means. New Ulm's Dmen will need to be stronger.

Goaltending will be the key Kraus has a more proven track record then Allen does..... This will be something to watch all night.

Should be a fun game with HUGE Seeding Implications!

See you up in Hutch

I agree with Gopherfan...Goalie play is a huge factor in this section, especially in the playoffs. As Luverne rode Meyer to the section finals a few years ago and as Marshall rode Campion to the state tournament last year. Kudos to you if you have a few good lines, defense and goaltending wins championships!!

Here is an article about the new conference that will force New Ulm to play Luverne next year. This article comes from the Rock County Star Herald.

Luverne High School athletic teams will compete as members of the Big South Conference starting next fall.

With recent approval coming from 13 school boards representing the current Southwest and South Central Conferences, the new BSC makes its debut during the 2014-15 school year.

All in all, very little will change for most of the LHS programs.

While some LHS teams compete in one big conference, most of the LHS squads will be members of the BSC’s Western Division, which includes all of the current SWC schools.

Luverne will compete in the BSC Western Division in volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, wrestling, golf and tennis.

The basketball and volleyball teams will play two games each with every team within the division during the regular season. At the end of the year, a game pitting the division leaders against each other will be staged to decide the conference championship.

As well as the title tilt, interdivision games involving the teams that finish second through sixth in the respective divisions will be staged at the end of the year as well.

Luverne’s football and hockey teams will compete as members of one big conference.

The conference team with the best winning percentage during the eight-game regular season wins the BSC football title.

The LHS hockey teams play each conference squad twice during the regular season, with the team sporting the best winning percentage at season’s end earning the BSC title.

Two different champions will be crowned at the end of one big meet for the cross country and track.

Luverne will be competing with the smaller schools in the league (Blue Earth, JCC, Pipestone, RWV, St. James and Windom) for conference title at the end of the season meet.

The LHS gymnastics and golf teams, members of the BSC’s Western Division, will play one match with each team within the division during the regular season. In order to win the overall BSC title, an LHS team would need to win the division title and beat the other division winner at BSC meets at the end of the season.

Luverne will be a member of the BSC Western Division as well, and its regular season record against the other six teams within the division will determine the seed LHS takes into a team tournament that will settle the overall championship at the end of the year.

The LHS boys’ and girls tennis teams are members of the BSC Western Division along with RWV, St. James Pipestone and Worthington.

Marshall also is a division member in girls’ tennis.

The LHS teams play each division member once during the regular season and two interdivision matches against teams from the Eastern Division during the regular season.

The leaders of each division will play for the conference championship at the end of the year.

The LHS baseball and softball teams are members of the BSC Small School Division along with JCC, Blue Earth, Pipestone, RWV, Windom and St. James.

LHS plays each team within the division twice during the regular season. The team with the best record in the small division takes on the team with the best record from the Large School division for the overall championship.

Marshall was beating Windom 8-1 when I left with about 1:20 remaining. Devin Nielsen spoiled Campion's shutout with about 2 minutes left.

Scoring for Marshall were Sebastian Landry (3), Taylor Rasmussen, Derek Rasmussen, Andrew Bell, Casper Larsen, and Blaine Moran. Shots weren't that far different. Garrett Schumacher played in goal first period for Windom and Nate Monson took periods 2 and 3.

Yikes hutch let's in 5 goals on 17 shots? WOW that is absolutely pathetic....... Either Krause got a lot better for New ulm, or Hutch's first line is overrated!! What'd it look like tonight in Hutch?

Hutch's D zone coverage was horrible. Krause played great.

Kraus has always been a good goaltender. I mean he led new ulm area to state as a sophomore! He just doesn't get help up his defense and does have his moments

We'll put it this way. Hutch outshot New Ulm 26-3 in the second period and 18 to 8 in the third. Absolutely dominated the 2nd period, controlled the zone, just couldn't get the puck past Kraus. Cowger had two goals tonight, top line still producing. But giving up 5 goals on 17 shots...ouch. Might need to give one of the sophomores a look. If memory serves right, Nelson had a good year for the Bantam A team last year.

Hutch needs to hope to God Allan plays better or they put in a different tendy and their defenseman really need to play better. Congrats to New Ulm on the win. Thats got big section implications for them. Kraus had a huge save in the second on a short handed break away. Not sure who the player for Hutch was. New Ulm looked good in their D zone tonight, just can't give up that many shots.

Woofta. According to follow the puck, Luverne won 13-0 and marshal powers by Windom. I'm going to try and make it down to Luverne Friday night to see them play Minnehaha Academy, then to New Ulm Saturday to see them also play Minnehaha.

Hutch had roughly 6 kids quite playing after their first year of bantams and 1 kid left the program to play his last year of bantam hockey for Woodbury and is now playing for Holy Family.

New Ulm Area 5 Hutch 3

As mentioned on here already story of this one was GOALTENDING. Kraus was great for the Eagles and Allen was shaky. Hutch controlled large parts of the game especially in the 2nd period. They were never able to capitalize enough to take over the game though.

Allen will need to be better in the nets for Hutch to be a serious contender come playoffs. Was not his best game. Hitch's Dman got lost at times in the Dzone and left some people wide open. New Ulm's Dmen were not much better both teams D unit will need alot of work. It is early though.

Fun game to watch lots of intensity out of both sides a very good 3A Hockey game. Would love to see these two face off again when it matter come playoff time.

Other 3A Scores
River Lakes skated by Morris Benson 6 to 1
LDC Hammered on Redwood 9 to 0
Luverne routed Fairmont 13 to 0
Marshall got a big confidence booster hammering Windom 8 to 1

It is early but right now it looks like in 3A
Top 4
Willmar
New Ulm Area
Hutch
Luverne

Middle of the Pack
LDC
Marshall

The Rest
Windom
Morris Benson
Worthington
Fairmont
Redwood

Wow, 7 kids out of about 11, if 4 are left, all at the same time. Odd, for a group that went to regions as peewees, to quit as bantams.
