I doubt they will get a big name to come here. We dont like our coaches running things and those guys have to have a lot of autonomy. Our AD hangs out in the locker room. Bobby wouldnt go for that.
Apparently, our AD cant fire the basketball coach without checking with the President. I think Monson lasted as long as he did because no one can make a decision.
Maybe the same circumstances will allow our Glen the Geat to reign forever. One can only hope.

Star Tribune via CNNSI.com wrote:Minnesota alumni are likely to push for Detroit Pistons head coach Flip Saunders to replace Dan Monson, but the former Gophers player would have to take a significant pay cut and said Thursday he wasn't interested in the job. Steve Lavin and Rick Majerus also could be in the mix, and the list of hot young coaches includes Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Rob Jeter, Southern Illinois' Chris Lowry, Butler's Todd Lickliter and Wichita State's Mark Turgeon.
Any of the guys on that list get my heart going a little (considering it isn't pumping when it comes to Gopher's bball). An established name like Lavin or Majerus would bring credibility to our program as far as game goes instead of academics like Monson brought, but a wildcard like Jeter or Lowry might turn out to be huge. What's your thoughts, established veteran or wildcard?
I like the inclusion of the Winona State guy (Mike Leaf
http://www.winona.edu/athletics/mbasketball/1955.htm), but I don't think that will happen.

This is not a good time for Gopher bball. In 1970 when they wer in the tank, what did they do?
Hired a young , hip coach that recruited a bunch of mercenary thugs and filled the place every game.... Bill Mussleman. They played "Sweet Georgia Brown " during warm ups and did ball tricks.
I was there. It was great. Clyde Turner, Flip, Behagan. They were fun to watch.
It was short lived however. They decided to beat the ship out of OSUs Luke Whitty and no one thought that was too cool.
So they hired a vanilla guy and he was fine until his players decided to gang bang a Wisconsin girl in a dorm room. Nobody thought that was too cool.
So they hired Clem and he made sure that they all passed their courses by having the work done for them . Nobody thought that was too cool.
So, Dan Monson rolls in. Not even a whiff of scandal in 8 years. Unfortunately, just barely a whiff of winning too.
Can any of the guys mentioned come in and win with out cheating?

I like the idea of a mid-major coach such as Jeter, Lowry, Turgeon, etc. Coaches from those schools usually have a good pedigree and know how to coach without top-end talent. There's also a good track record of coaches (Bill Self from Tulsa, Bruce Weber from Southern Illinois) so it's not as if we are reaching out for one. They could breathe new life into a program on life-support and hopefully create a buzz around Gopher basketball that hasn't been seen since the (non-existent) Final 4.

Mike Montgomery coached some top ranked Stanford teams before he left for the "greener" pastures of Golden State in the NBA. I realize this isn't exactly Palo Alto, CA, but he got good kids into Stanford. Getting someone admitted to the U of M can't be as hard as getting them through to Stanford.
Admin locked the other thread, but the Novak guy who coaches/recruits at Hopkins High should find a spot on the new Gopher staff, he has the pulse and respect of most Minnesota basketball talent.
At any rate the Gophs are going to have to pony up some big bucks and get a big time coach in here like they did with Lucia, I hope Maturi doesn't go the cheap way and get some mid major guy. Been there, done that.

Here's a few More to throw around
Kevin O'Neil - Marq, NW, Tenn, NBA, well traveled, classic sideline screamer that will kick some tail. Can recruit, afterall he landed William Gates.
Mark Few - dejavu
Brad Dougherty - ND, NC, been exiled to some place in FL?
Dan Dakich - 10 years at Bowling Green, comes from the Bobby Knight tree, was offered WV job a few years back but turned it down.
Tom Creen continues to win at Marquette, has eye for talent that other Majors overlook. Dangle enough $ and he'l at least think twice.

If we got Creen, I would do cartwheels around my apartment. He has found a way to get very good recruits to Marquette and annually has a club with less resources than many others into the NCAA tournament. With Marquette now in the Big East, it may be tough to lure him away for a job that isn't the most attractive one on the market, but it's worth a shot.

Show him the money.
If IN, Kan, UCLA, Tex, or Kentucky thought he was the solution to their woes, they would get it done.

We have talked about "what it takes to win". Is it coaching, is it facilities, is it cheating, is it recruiting or is it attitude. This weekend I made my 2nd trip to the Joyce Center for some live CCHA action.
The University of Notre Dame provides its football team with what it needs to win, the next corner they cut, will be the first one. Let' just say they don't follow that same philosphy with its hockey program.
The Joyce Center is a temporary hockey rink situated on the end of a dome big enough to house football. It has permanent seating for about 700 backsides. The remaining 1,800 seats are temporary removable bleachers and a curtain seperates the hockey game from a Shriners convention that is renting the other side of the building.
Notre Dame has a team, a schedule, a conference affiliation, scholarships, talent, an a great coach. But the Joyce Center simply says that this program is not a priority here. If a recruit must attend a game, I don't see how MN, WI, or North Dakota could ever loose a recruit to Notre Dame or anyone in the CCHA.
When it comes to hockey, the WCHA does it right. The banners at MN, WI, North Dakota, and CC prove it.

People dont care about hockey in Indiana. Never have , never will.
Its basketball.
But basketball is also bigger than hockey in Minnesota.
The Barn is a great place and has great atmosphere. It used to be a place where nobody wanted to come in and play, even in the down years. You could have a recruit come and visit and the place was rockin and had to be an easy sell.
Lately , it doesnt intimidate Winona State.
One thing about Minnesota that we dont talk about too much but might be a factor in doing "what it takes to win" is just the general attitude about all of this. I dont think that the U's success in athletics is as important to people as it might need to be.
Part of that is our make up. We keep things in perspective.
Part of it is the presence of major league sports.
Part of it is the lack of success.
Doing what it takes to win isnt a priority.

Last line I saw showed the Gophers as 6.5 pt. dogs for the biggie on the 29th.
I don't think the Vikes pass defense could cover the 6.5, therefore, I know the Gophers can't.
To all wagers out there, give the points and take the Red Raiders. Should be a lot of balls in the air that night.

Speaking of the Gophers and their backwards Athletic Depatment, anybody else notice the announcement about "out of respect" for other cultures the Gophers will no longer schedule UND in any sport other than hockey. Talk about hypocricy in action, if you're going to take a stand take a stand, across the board. Also anybody else get the irony invoved when one of the teams in the Big Ten has the nickname "Fighting Illini"? he Gophers failed to mention them.
Talk about a bunch of of BS, the U can put on a play bashing the Pope and Catholics under the guise of art and free speech and think Fighting Sioux is racist but Fighting Illini isn't. Our Tax dollars at work.

I wonder how the athletic dept. addressed the question of "Why did you continue to play UND in non-revenue sports during a period of time when you claimed to only play schools within your conference bearing Indian names?"

What a bunch of mushed brained liberals.
Regardless of your opinion on Indian names, how is it appropriate to opt for policy of 'we wont play you'.
If you think that its a bad idea to have an Indian name attatched to a sports team, fine, I can respect that. But it isnt illegal and it isnt immoral and it isnt against the Constitution. So, voice your opinion and move on.
But these mushed brained , self righteous, snobbish, leather elbow patched, pipe smoking , commies think they know whats best for everybody and will deny athletic competition to those that disagree.
What a bunch of condecending axe holes.

It's just too bad that the State of Minnesota hasn't made the same decision and banned public schools from playing privates.

I am asking for that packerboy! Put them back in their own league, have a state private tourney in Duluth with no TV coverage and about 200 fans. Then kids wouldn't want to leave their community programs no matter how hard they are recruited.

A Private School state tournament at tDECC would outdraw the Dogs even when it's Rodent Weekend. Heck, the Marshall faithful would buy a couple thousand tickets. East fans would buy another thousand to root for Marshall's opponent.
