I have a family member looking at applying for their JV baseball job and they told me about this. It looks pretty officially open to me.

Girls Varsity Hockey Coach
Job Summary –
• Oversee the development of the 7-12 program.
• Supervise and evaluate coaching staff
• Order and inventory equipment and make yearly report to Activities Director
• Direct pre-season and post-season meetings with parents, athletes, and coaching staff
• Closely follow the rules set forth by the MSHSL
• Teach and communicate proper fundamentals and strategies of the game
• Communicate with the media results and statistics when needed
• Be an advocate of good sportsmanship
• Maintain detailed stats, and records for post-season and hall of fame awards

Qualifications –
• Minnesota Department of Education valid coaching certification or valid certificate from the National Federation Coaches Education Program
• Head coaching experience preferable with knowledge and experience in their sport
• Must be a positive role model and provide an enjoyable experience for their athletes

Working Conditions:

• WORK DAY/YEAR: Winter season, approximately November 1, 2010 - March 15, 2011

Selection Procedure:
All applications will be reviewed and the administrator / supervisor will select a number of candidates from the applicant pool to be interviewed. Once an employment offer has been extended and accepted, all applicants will be notified of the decision made.


This implies that Kasson-Mantorville is the hiring school. The other members of the co-op may or may not have any say in the hiring process. No mention of this being a one year job.

I would not recommend taking a head coaching job to my worst enemy, in any sport, especially hockey! I think what these female coaches have figured out that it is much more satisfying to be an asst coach. You get to coach, help young people develop, often times have closer more meaningful relationships and more fun. Sure you get a little less money (most don't do it for the money anyway) but you avoid all of the hassles. No meetings with annoying parents, no booster meetings, no meetings with the AD about playing time, no youth hockey issues, etc. Avoiding all of these hassles is "priceless"!

It would be great to have more female head coahes but I think this trend will continue. They are just too darn smart and they don't need to feed their enormous egos like the men.

2006 = 32 of 124 jobs opened this year (25.8%)
2005 = 25 of 122 jobs opened this year (20.5%).

I haven't followed as closely, but the turnover seems to be down. This is good for the game.
