Kind of grouping all officials into one category there aren't you IP?

After all is said and done, at the end of the day "its only hockey". If everyone remembers that, there's a lot less finger pointing and complaining about any of it.

Just thought I would clarify the subject of evaluators and mentors. I can only speak for the district I referee in.

In our district, we do not pay the mentors or evaluators.
Our mentor program is just 3 years old and getting better every year. Our intention is to hook up all 1st year officials with a mentor for the year. Our mentors are hand picked by the referee board. The mentors are only allowed on the ice for SC and U10 games. They are not there to call the game for any reason. They are there to instruct the new officials and meet with them after the game and offer advice (good or bad).

Evaluators in our district do not get paid either. All games that they attend to eval a referee is done on their own time.

you have no idea who i am. The mentor program is working very well. The new referees did a very nice job this year, and thanks to the menotr program, they made very good improvements from the beginning of the year.

hockeyref1, thanks for the detail on what your district is doing. I think more districts and reffing associations are catching on to the value of this concept.

Don't worry about the people questioning your truth. They are the same people that sit up in stands, watching their player and complaining how someone else is holding them back. Or they are a dissapointed player needing to point a finger somewhere rather than looking in the mirror.

Hockeyref1 -
The TC district really needs a mentor program like you guys have, how would you suggest we get the program set up if the Head Ref In Charge can't be approached.

It's like all the things we talk about at the coaches meeting is what the coaches should be doing different. Never about what the Refs should be doing different.

"Pimp'n ain't easy" <img src=

My brother Joe and I have been coaches and we both were officals for a time. I think you guys need to lay off what the refs do. There is so much stuff that happens and the ref doesn't have time to take it all in. I think if coaches worried more about the players on the bench and teaching, this wouldn't be an issue.

I for one think the refs in our TC district are unique, most do a good job and some are learning and then there are some that hold grudges. But all in all most do as good as any district in the state. Just like coaches some are good and some are bad but in my case I'm both. Keep up the good work and keep pluckin away.
