I here you but I think it is a myth at the HS level.
If TRF is good next year it is because an above average cluster of players is converging on the HS team at the same time.
Warroad's mere presence will not elevate TRF to any higher level.

Disagree whole-heartedly, Mr. Shanty. Warroad's 236-1 female-to-male ratio could motivate several teams in 8A. I, as a fan, would go to a Warrior game just for the scenery. I change my mind - stay in 8A, Warroad.

schwang17 wrote:gottago wrote:I respectfully disagree that section 8a would be better without Warroad. Every sport needs a top dog for everyone else to come gunnin' for every year and Warroad has earned that status, albeit through questionable means at times. Defending champs serve as positive motivation for everyone else to achieve higher standards. If Warroad opted to move up as you suggest, who's to say Bemidji, TRF, or EGF wouldn't go on a 5 or 6 year run as Warroad has? Would you demand that their success require them to move up, too? Cudos to Roseau for opting up, but their independent decision has not and should not influence anyone else.
No disrespect but I think that's silly talk. Warroad is a top 15-20 school at the very least every year. None of the schools you listed are. If you were good enough to compete at the AA level, why would you settle for playing Class A? Especially when your so-called arch rivals and kids you grew up with are playing at a higher level than you are? Roseau won state 2 years ago and Warroad is right with them most years. They can beat Moorhead and Roseau on any given night, but they would rather play TRF, EGF, etc. knowing they have a better chance. Fine and dandy - just don't tell teams you won't play them for lack of competition.
I've been away for awhile Schwangy.
But, based on your logic, if it was Warroad's purpose to play teams that they have a better chance of beating, they would play PR 24 times a year.
And for all of you commenting on the attendance numbers, they may be incorrect, but they are right out of the MN boys hockey website, in the archives.
They may not be entirely accurate, but I expect they are close.
Now I know that the Warroad faithful are going to get all worked up, but, if the Bantams and PeeWees are any indication of the future, I would say it looks very bright for Bemigi very soon and then EGF soon after that, in 8A. And not so bright for the Warriors.
PR, well, that's another story.

Incorrect. They'll play top tier A and AA teams, but only if it's during the regular season. Your quote is completely off base from what I said. Warroad has dominated the Section for years - who cares about challenging yourself at the next level?

Why would the Warrior Faithful get worked up over that comment? People have been saying that exact same thing since about 1996. Warroad will do just fine...

Since 1996?
Good year to start:
To state in:
1998 = EGF
1999 = EGF
2001 = EGF
2002 = EGF
(None for PR by the way)
I'm expecting that to start happening again in 2-3 years.
I know that just terrifies the Warriors.

So they gave Warroad a challenge 4-5 years out of 20. Sad but it's better than anybody else in the Section. This has been my point from day 1. Why move up and play Moorhead and Roseau when we can lay down 15 years out of 20 and still compete for a state title?

So since no one else in the section will man up and put up a challenge, Warroad should leave? Maybe the rest of the teams in the section, at least those with twice the population or more, should figure out how to put a competitive team out there once every couple years.

Yeah, since population means so much...
Teams in this section could have the best group they've had in years and Warroad can be down and still win it easily. Wake up and smell the roses.

So we will try for you one more time.
Last 20 years?
Lets go last 30+
State tournament appearances from 1971 to 1996 =
Warroad 5, EGF 3.
Not too bad. Then EGF took 4 of the next 5 to take the lead 7 to 6 through 2002.
A little better than Sad.
I'll admit that I expect more from my home town. but compared to the rest of 8A they have held up pretty well.
Give it a rest Schwangy.

From 1971-1996 Warroad had 6 appearances, EGF had 3. EGF won in 97,98,99, 01. Warroad went in 00. That makes Warroad 7, EGF 7 from 71-01. Since then? Warroad has 5 appearances and EGF has 1. That makes it 12-8 in the last 30+ years.
So Gallery, why no call for EGF to move up?

Nice job UNS.
I missed one.
I would like to see both EGF and Warroad in AA, but that is an individual town decision.
Anyway, who cares. It is still good hockey.

Exactly! If all the good class A programs were forced to move up to AA, all we would have is the old Tier system again. For some reason i can't get that through to some of these people. Perhaps its because they weren't hockey fans back in the tier I & II days? I think in any case, the more competitive and close the two classes are, the better it is for MN Hockey in general.

EGF had a nice little 3-4 year run 8-10 years ago. Even when they won they went through Warroad to get there and they were nail biters that could have went either way. I feel Warroad could compete well enough on any ice surface against any team in the state most years. You could maybe say that about EGF 2-3 times in the past 20 years. Comparing these 2 teams and what they've done at State representing 8A isn't even a debatable issue. How many state titles and runner up trophies do the Green Wave hang around their facilities?
