Good to know I'm loved here...

DC has a lot of crime, yes. But the city is split into a rich yuppie side and a side with extreme poverty. (They threw all the government buildings in the middle to keep it all separate.) I'm on the rich yuppie side of the city.
Of course you're on the rich yuppie side

 Despite being neither rich nor much of a yuppie myself...

However, I can't see them sticking a university over in the middle of the projects. In general the rich people dislike the college students.

So one of the guys I watch hockey games with is a retired IBM engineer, we were talking about NASA and some proposed budget cuts which brought up the Apollo missions. He told me 6% of the population believe the moon landings were a hoax and 25% of those between 18 and 25 believe they were faked, the next day he sent me a story on CNN.com supporting his stats. Seriously 25%, citing lack of technology, and government manipulation as the biggest reasons. I suppose these young people also believe long divison and calculus were also impossible pre calculators. Good grief what is happening in our schools?

If you ever want to watch a pretty good documentery watch "For all Mankind" (you can get it on Hulu) the images and stories told by the Apollo astonauts will make you fell both small, insignificant, and patriotic.

I hear you...

Not only are the schools going down hill but also society itself.

Kids these days (an overwhelming number) are growing poorly. Lack of education, manners, and work ethic are putting our country in a hole. Not to mention our country is starting become a bunch a babies.

Solution (just one of many): Parents should start getting off their butts and raise their kids like in the early days. Put the backbone back into the US.

I see you point; however, many parents have become softer these days... Sometimes you need to give them a kick in the butt.

So true. Way too many parents are letting their kids a little too far of their leashes. They need to have more discipline Image

I shouldn't be getting into this because I have a million other things I should be doing, BUT...

We definitely have a problem with lack of intelligence (stupidity, ignorance, myopia, what ever you want to call it). But I'm not sure it's any worse now than it ever was. There were probably just as many clueless people back then, if not more. The difference:

People used to rely on one or two sources for their news. The local paper, a handful of TV networks, maybe the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal for the particularly urbane. Those people controlled the narratives on current events, whatever their biases, and they didn't need to worry about public opinion of them all that much because they were the only news sources.

With the advent of cable TV, and especially now the internet, anyone who wants to can now be a commentator on current events. This isn't necessarily a bad thing--it's helped some brilliant people get attention they wouldn't otherwise get, and brought some variety to reporting--but it also lets any idiot with a computer say whatever they want. The traditional media outlets have been forced into competition, which does make them more accountable, but also means they often try to cater their product to gain viewers or readers or advertising dollars. There are now very few voices of authority, and an awful lot of people trying to shout louder than the next to get more attention.

This board is the perfect example. 20 years ago, we'd have been the people who stood around the rink and chatted a lot, but the only real reports of the game would be sent in by a reporter. Now we go on this board and blather away. Enough intelligent things have been said on this board over the years that it gets a lot of traffic, even by some very respected people in the MN hockey establishment, who look to it for opinions. But again, we've also seen how anyone can just wander on here and spew whatever nonsense or libel they choose to throw out.

The media has been democratized, and for good or ill, there's probably no going back.

Nice post, Karl. I have a feeling you have already been educated/thought of this before. You're right that this forum, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc. are prime examples of media that have become available to everyone. Yes its a great source of news, information, and entertainment, but there are also A LOT of morons out their who use it as well. All of these capabilities are great, as well as new/current technology; however, it appears many users, especially ones who are grow-up, are becoming desensitized by all of it.
