I don't know if they're sticking with these, but over the summer it was:

Olson-Toninato-Randolph
Valesano-Forbort-Lundgren
Holappa-Toscano-Campion

I wouldn't read too much into who gets the start in goal tonight, since they probably won't see 10 shots. This one has a chance to get very ugly. I'm more interested to see who gets the start on Saturday against Wayzata.

According to Howie Hanson. Trevor Olson is out for awhile. And senior defenseman Nate Repensky will step up to first line forward. I don't know if this is true or not. Howie Hanson has been known to blow smoke. But this will hurt the Hounds for the meantime.

Anyone have a score for the East game against Cambridge? Did they break 20 goals...

I did have some fun with his NE MN preseason rankings, which would have been funny if they weren't so sad.

East at #3 in the region is ridiculous enough, but I thought his ranking of Grand Rapids was worse. 7th in the region! Congrats GR, Howie thinks you're one spot better than Moose Lake, and says East has a cakewalk to state.

Just to be clear, I'm not Howie Hanson. Who is this Howie Hanson and how in the world is He deemed qualified to do ratings in high school hockey? In all my years involved in the sport I've never seen ratings so far off. Wow.

Yeah, I know you're not Howie Hanson...some time ago, Mr. Hanson made himself a few different user names and tried to post links to his blog all over the forum. He didn't react well when a few people pointed out his glaring errors.

When Mr. Hanson is not making up nonsense about Duluth-area hockey, he spends his time as a "full-time blogger." Once can identify him at the Heritage Center by finding the man wearing the "Howie Blog" sweatshirt. He writes about community events and the schools and so on; his site might be interesting if not for his unfortunate attempts to be a hockey analyst.

He's a Denfeld guy, as you'll be able to see if you ever look at one of his all-area teams. I was first introduced to him when he did an internet radio broadcast of an East-Denfeld game in 09. He got the players' names right on the third try usually, and did some rather epic moaning about the referees when East pulled ahead in the third period. Since then, his exploits include an incredibly long post that slammed the 09 East team as arrogant, an abortive career as a radio analyst, conning the Duluth school district into paying him a lot of money to set up a website on the schools, and several bizarre attempts to start a story about a group of Russian hockey star exchange students coming to Duluth.

Have I made my opinion on him clear enough?

Thanks for the clarification Karl. Any future articles attributed to Howie Hanson will not be associated with Hound Nation. Clearly his takes are off the grid.

Lundgren played first line with Toninato and Randolph. All five goals scored by the first line. Will need more scoring from 2nd and 3rd lines until Olson returns.

I may have to eat my words on this one. With East, Central (are they a team anymore?), Marshall, and Denfeld, maybe there is a lot of competition for talent in Duluth?

Central is now closed permanently. Denfeld closed last year while its students went to Central. With the new Denfeld reopening, the Central students were sent to either Denfeld or East. Part of that huge project called the Red Plan in ISD 709.

Duluth East has its own youth program within DAHA. (They’re technically not associated with the high school, but the two are very close.) There are occasional transfers to Denfeld, Cloquet, and Hermantown but these aren’t a serious drain on the program. The big competitor for players coming out of the system is Marshall--all things considered East does a good job of keeping most of the top players at East, but there have been some high-profile players out of the East system who went to Marshall, and it’s really not a coincidence that Marshall became a good team right after East’s run of great success in the mid-90s. Marshall gave opportunities to a number of players who might have spent a year or two playing JV at East, or playing less than they do at Marshall. It’s also probably not a coincidence that since Marshall’s resurgence about a decade ago, East has not been as good as they were for the previous decade, though there are other reasons for that as well.

The Elk River youth hockey program has one more team than East’s at both the Bantam and PeeWee levels, which is not insignificant. They also co-op with Zimmerman at the HS level, which may add a few more players. Also, Elk River has grown a lot over the past two decades, which means lots of young families. Duluth, on the other hand, has not been growing, and is getting older. East has several hundred less students than most metro schools, including Elk River, and was steadily shrinking. For most of the past decade East was small enough to be a Class A school, and opted up to AA. (That’s changed now that there’s no more Central, though given the state of Central hockey, the closure won’t affect the HS teams much.)

Should be a good game vs WBL, we will be in town for the Spirit. I 'm going to try to get to that one. WBL has the top 9th grader inthe state.[imo]
