Mr. Hockey Finalists Announced
Tiny by WCHBlog on Feb 11, 2009 7:54 PM PST
The ten finalists for Minnesota's Mr. Hockey Award have been announced. The finalists are as follows:
Dan DeLisle, Totino Grace(Minnesota-Duluth)
Marshall Everson, Edina (Harvard)
Ben Hanowski, Little Falls(St. Cloud)
Tyler Lapic, New Prague(Wisconsin)
Nick Leddy, Eden Prairie(Minnesota)
Anders Lee, Edina(Notre Dame)
Danny Matson, Holy Angels(North Dakota)
Zach Palmquist, South St. Paul(Minnesota State)
Tyler Pilick, Centennial(Minnesota State)
Max Tardy, Duluth East(Minnesota-Duluth)
A pretty solid list. I'm guessing that this is the first time all ten candidates have a college commitment in place this early.
Bloomington Jefferson's Casey O'Connor given the Frank Brimsek Award, given to the state's top goaltender. O'Connor had impressive numbers, though he didn't see that many shots on the season. Duluth East's Matt Cooper also had really good numbers, and Alexandria's Matt Hemingway might be the most talented senior goalie, but O'Connor was a nice choice.
Well who is going to win it?

It's a very good list; having now seen most of the candidates I'd say Leddy or Mattson, but I'm no scout or anything.
I'm obviously biased, but I'm a bit disappointed in the Brimsek choice. Isn't it a bit odd that they choose that before the season ends? Seeing how they hold up under the pressure of sections and/or State would probably be very helpful in the decision process.

I am too, this is his first year on varsity, and although his numbers are good, I attribute that to his fantastic defense.karl(east) wrote:It's a very good list; having now seen most of the candidates I'd say Leddy or Mattson, but I'm no scout or anything.

I also agree with your point on the award being too early. Just like 2006, when Jefferson was arguably the top contender in state. It was their Brimsek winner than cost them the section final game. Although, to be honest Lee probably was the best goalie that year and had a fantastic resume (especially compared to O'Connor)
who were the other Brimsek possibles? Fons is a junior right?

Nice list, all winners for staying at school and having great seasons.
Do not underestimate the time and commitment it takes to tweeze Gorg's eyebrows

If it's anyone from Edina, my prediction is Everson. If they don't get to the State Tournament it will be neither.

Well, the runaway preseason favorite bolted for juniors (Lee). Again, I'm biased, but I would have chosen DE's Matt Cooper, who leads the state in shutouts and has had a very solid year. Hemingway in Alexandria is also supposed to be excellent, though I've never seen him play.gophermadman wrote:I am too, this is his first year on varsity, and although his numbers are good, I attribute that to his fantastic defense.karl(east) wrote:It's a very good list; having now seen most of the candidates I'd say Leddy or Mattson, but I'm no scout or anything.

Hemmingway could use a little more size but other than that there's not much bad to say. He's very good.karl(east) wrote:Well, the runaway preseason favorite bolted for juniors (Lee). The only problem Lee could have is Everson could take some votes from him maybe. Sometimes makes it harder to win when a teammate is up for the same award, kinda like the Heisman. So it could be a factor but may not be. I would say there are really 5-6 guys that could get it this year.komada77 wrote:I gotta beleive it's Lee. Not only is he a phenomenal hockey player, he's also an excellent student and already has quite a bit of name recognition due to winning Mr. Football this year.
Lee didn't win Mr. Football that was Varmah Sonie from Apple Valley did.

He was the Metro player of the year, which in football means a little more.hockeyjunkie2 wrote:The only problem Lee could have is Everson could take some votes from him maybe. I would have to disagree with that. However, he does have a shot at this one I'm gunna say Lee, Everson, Hanowski, Leddy, Pilick, and Tardy. Those 6, I know others have Matson I don't know I guess I don't see him winning it. It could also be my faithfulness to the Gophers.scoreboard33 wrote:He was the Metro player of the year, which in football means a little more.hockeyjunkie2 wrote:The only problem Lee could have is Everson could take some votes from him maybe. the list this year is wide open. Great list of candidates, i will pick Hanowski as the winner this year, breaking the scoring record really says alot and in a close race the record breaking will be wants puts him on top. Traditionally the winner has been a potential high round NHL draft pick, if they do the same, the nod goes to Leddy. Tardy has had a great year, really made himself noticed this year, has not received alot of notoriety like the other candidates congrats to all great season
