Most Draft Picks from One Association

Post by Glory_Days99 »

Since the 2000 draft, what association has the most draft picks? I am from Hastings and here is our list:

2000 - Jeff Taffe (Rd 1), Dan Welch (Rd 8)
2005 - Taylor Chorney (Rd 2), Michael Gergen (Rd 2)
2008 - Derek Stepan (Rd ?)

Just curious, will be interesting to see.

Is Holy Angels a new youth hockey organization or a High School that is fed into from multiple youth associations?

GR has a bunch as well. A few notables....White, Stejskal, Goligoski, the Rohloff bros., Marinucci, Nielson, Fairchild, Baker, the Kleinendorst bros., DeGrio, Casey, Kellin, Malwitz, LeVasseur, Lempe. Not sure if that's all of them, but it's a pretty good list.

I believe Joey Martin was from Hanover (small town inbetween Buffalo and St. Michael) He might have started hockey at Buffalo - but finished his High School career with Elk River

Do you have that number?

Don't tell me my post was lost. :( Anyway, here goes.

They probably meant Jeff Saterdalen.

The Edina number isn't even close. We need rules for what it means to be from an association.

1980- Mike Lauen
1981- Scott Ferguson
1982- Wally Chapman, John DeVoe, Bill Brauer
1983- Dan Wurst, Paul Roff
1984- Paul Ranheim, Mike Wurst, Tom Terwilliger
1985- Greg Dornbach, Dave Jecha
1986- Marty Nanne
1987- Ben Hankinson, Bob Mendel
1988- John McCoy, Matt Hentges
1989- Pete Hankinson, Tom Nevers, Noel Rahn
1990- Dan Plante

I know Dave Maley is missing from the above list. 1982 perhaps?

Of course not all of the 22 named above qualify, but who you knock out depends on the rules. If you take off Jecha you certainly have to count Mendel and Plante. (I'd actually count Jecha and not count the other two who moved to Edina for HS hockey.) Seems to me Mike Wurst and Dave Jecha count, but neither could make the Varsity. Does Pete Hankinson count? He was a Supplemental pick.

And the original poster was looking at just 2000 and beyond. My post wasn't responding to that.

What defines association? Looking at the GR site, it appears to be at least 17 draftees from GR.

Thanks Haute, good point. I guess the fact that ANY kid is drafted out of high school in todays day and age is a serious feet in its own right, no matter where they're from.

O-town,

You have Dave Jecha listed as an Edina grad.

Though he came up through the Edina youth system, Edina didn't want him and cut him his junior year. Dave Jecha played for Minnetonka and I know he would consider himself a Skipper and definitely not a Hornet.

Prez...glad you chimed in. I know that cat's story well. The question was "most draft picks from one association/high school". No way does the Minnetonka youth association get credit for him! Of course, Willard Ikola shouldn't either. He also cut Mike Wurst from the above list.

This is why I mentioned that we need rules before counting. Some kids moved from other states to play for Edina. Some Edina players weren't drafted until college so they show in the NHL records as playing for a different school.

Huge Hook is the next guy we need on the thread!

Makes sense O-town. I guess he goes to Edina under the rules.

I played with Mike Wurst (and his twin, Dan). Fun guys and good teammates.

I can say that I believe Dave J.'s favorite moment from his senior year wasn't the state tourney, or the draft, but beating Edina in Braemar and "yardsale-ing" one of their top guys.
