Oshie Arrested...Again

Post by sinbin006 »

From ESPN:
GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota has suspended the leading scorer on its men's hockey team after he was arrested over the weekend for disorderly conduct.

Junior forward T.J. Oshie, of Warroad, Minn., will miss Friday's game at St. Cloud State for violating team rules, head coach Dave Hakstol announced Wednesday.

"Right now, it's a one-game suspension," Hakstol said. "I can't get into the whole situation ... I'm disappointed right now.

"Obviously, this will be a public issue," Hakstol said.

Oshie was arrested at 2:28 a.m. on Sunday, Grand Forks police said. The Sioux, ranked No. 8 in the nation, wrapped up a two-game series with visiting New Hampshire on Saturday night. Michael Radja, a New Hampshire player, also was arrested for disorderly conduct, police said.

Radja, the leading scorer for No. 7 New Hampshire, will be suspended for at least two games, coach Dick Umile said.

No details were released by UND.

It's the second time Oshie has been arrested since joining UND. He and former Sioux teammate Jonathan Toews, now with the Chicago Blackhawks, pleaded guilty last year to being minors in a bar. Both were placed on probation and ordered to perform community service.

Oshie, a 6-foot, 192-pound forward leads the Sioux with nine goals. He's tied with two other players for the team lead in points with 16.

The Sioux (9-7-1, 6-6 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) will conclude a two-game series with the Huskies on Saturday.

Though this was obviously a dumb mistake by Oshie, it's not like he murdered a bunch of dogs for money when he was already a millionaire. He got in a scuffle with a player from the opposing team away from the rink. If this is the worst problem that hockey has, it's suprising more people don't try to have their kids follow hockey.

A few things...

I would gather Oshie is a decent individual but it is sad that he didn't learn from his prior mistakes with the law. This isn't his first run in with the police and you'd hope he'd learn from his first time. I guess not.

It is also troublesome that these guys don't recognize that they are held to a higher standard than the rest of the students their age. The hockey players (especially at a school when hockey is the top sport) need to recognize that they represent their school in every way because of theior status. By breaking the law, not only does a player draw negative attention to himself but he draws it to his school. Not good.

Finally, it seems to me that the closer these guys get to signing a pro deal, the more they lack focus on doing what is right (whether on or off the ice).

Very well put. At least all the guys in the NHL aren't running around with guns and starting fights at strip clubs though.

Where did it say they were fighting? I assumed that they are buddies away from the rink and were hanging out.

Assuming things aren't we guys...there was no fight. Stupid college deal with two guys stuck in an elevator after many cold ones...you may want to call these two guys..."The Whiz Kids".

He may not have broke a serious law but it is still something that got him arrested. Can't be too sanctimonious considering that fact.

Spinning? How do you spin things when a guy gets arrested?

I'd make the same comments no matter where a player comes from. These guys should be held to a higher standard than the rest of the student population. I don't care if they are a Gopher player or a player of some other team.

Wannabe? I own a bachelor's and a master's degree from the U. I earned my maroon and gold in the classroom. :P

Funny part of this in the Herald today they interviewed the St. Louis Blues president he basically laughed it off if you knew the specifics it's pretty funny the GF police are pretty petty on this one - cop must have been pissed when Osh wouldn't give him an autograph. Davidson also said the kid called him so that he wouldn't hear about it after the fact. Davidson also said he could be making hundreds of thousands of dollars right now playing for him and he sounds like he's ready for him. I bet the Maroon & Gold guys are wishing he'd pull the plug.

Well, not that the Gophers are kicking much ass this year but neither are the Sioux (with Oshie) if you have taken a look lately.

They certainly started off that 2nd half run with a bang last night, huh?

Given the expectations for the Sioux heading into this year, I don't know of any true Sioux fan who thought they'd be below .500 in the WCHA at this stage of the year.

Besides, past seasons don't mean anything in regard to the present. It doesn't automatically happen simply because it did before.

Got to see the Sioux switch gears tonight. Looks like they missed #7 last night as he was the second star tonight behind his linemate the reigning Hobey winner.

This is just what I have heard from a few people that go to UND. The 2 players were stuck in an elevator for a period of time. They had to urinate, so they did. They recieved disorderly conduct for their actions. I have no idea if that is the facts or not.

A couple of college kids caught in a bar last year and this is big news? This is about as newsworthy as that worthless channel nine bust of the Gophers players at Station 19. I know these student athletes need to be held to a higher standard but come on...Oshie and his buddy had a few beers and took a leak in public. I hardly think this is criminal.

Could not agree with you more, must have been a boring night in GF for the guys wearing the badge. i would think this will get thrown out in court, unless their is more to the story.

what makes you think he won't learn?

So he is just like 90% of all college students, has a few drinks to unwind everynow and then. Taking a leak in public probably wasn't the brightest decision but who hasnt been stuck somewhere or been far from a bathroom when theyve had to go before, honestly.

This may come as a shock to everyone on this board but...Gopher players drink too, and yes even the underage ones.

Jacketfan06 must not have ventured off to college yet. Kids get tanked and take a leak if they have to. Not uncommon. Oshie, that criminal!
