New Rules
I was wondering why we have 15 minute stop time for D6 and 12 minute stop for D8.
All Leagues should be the same for each age class.
I think different leagues call penalty's more often. Interference is really enforced in D6.
I watched a couple of games at Burnsville Tourney and some teams had 10 penalty's in game . 8 for Interference 2 for Boarding for the team that Won 8-4 and the losing team had 2 tripping 6 for interference 1 checking from behind. Wow 20 minutes for the winning team & 30 minutes for losing team. Way to go Mn Hockey. Take the game from the kids and give more attention to the skill of how the refs can blow their whistle. If it's violence I would understand but, you can't even lift a stick of another player. So this sucks.
Good Teams will always have the advantage over weaker teams with the rules this way. If the other team has more speed how can you slow them down if you don't tie them up. Put them on the powerplay and they will eat the weaker team up. Then add in stop time to powerplays and that's how the game can really give the weaker team no chance to compete.
Another great rule is limit the # of games for Peewee's. The Teams that are great play AAA all season long and When it's hockey season and the Kid that plays other sports is told he can only play 35 games for his association and if his team sucks and isn't allowed in playoffs. Season over while EDINA GETS TO PLAY 12 more games in playoffs, regionals. Not counting all the scrimmages that don't get counted against game limit. So in summary 60-70 games or 100 (if you count preseason) for the great teams and 35 for the bad. More Powerplays for the faster teams and more penalty's for the weaker team trying to slow the Machine down. Sorry Edina Team down.
This isn't about sour grapes. This is MN hockey says give the game back to the kids. Well my kid wants to play more games and team isn't likely to go very far. So now he has to wait till the start of baseball season to play more games. Showcase league is 10 more games less true PWA talent and now will interfere with Baseball. So again what is the point of the rule to limit the # of games.
Enforcing penalty's so they understand they can't do that when they get to the NHL. Well good because my kid won't make it to the NHL since it's about 1 out of million that have the abilty to play at that level. He won't want to play hockey anymore because you can't try to stop the good teams from scoring. So again change the rules back and only enforce the violent stuff and Tripping. This is not a rant about Edina or any other great teams. They were used as examples of how Mn Hockey rules will make the great teams stronger and the weaker ones will just have to play B-Hockey. So please if anyone reply's about if My kids team is that weak they should just quit. Grow up.

Not sure where to start... I like the fact that they got rid of some of the clutching and grabbing but I have not gotten to a youth game yet to see how weak some of the game calling has gotten or if it is even a complaint yet.Statsman101 wrote:I was wondering why we have 15 minute stop time for D6 and 12 minute stop for D8.

As for the amount of games, well its skill development as well as fun. If you have a weaker team practicing more, they should be able to catch up with the better teams via practice and decent coaching. Its the same for every team other than playoffs. I am sorry you are not lucky enough to live in a good hockey community but there are others who are in the same boat. While I agree that more games should be implemented at some of the levels (ie peewees and bantams), there needs to be skill development as well. Take your kid out to the outdoor rinks and have him skate against the older kids, he will love those games and could learn some decent moves as well as some skating skills...
Re: New Rules
So I'm just going to tackle the rules aspect of your argument. First of all, once upon a time, the game was the way that way that we are trying to get it back to. Sticks were used for playing the puck. Stick lifts aren't illegal, just some officials get a little confused and some players tend to lift at the hands instead of the lower part of the stick, which is illegal. Secondly, only call the violent offenses? I hope you are kidding. Let's look at a broader spectrum of life. You have now just said that it's wrong for people to drink and drive, but it's okay to ignore seat belts or speed, since those are minor offenses. How bout we just teach the kids the rules and expect them to follow them instead of picking and choosing which ones we want to follow.Statsman101 wrote:Enforcing penalty's so they understand they can't do that when they get to the NHL. As for growing up, coming on to a website to vent is one thing, but a baseless rant followed by "grow up" says to me that you should probably take a look in the mirror. Become part of the solution, don't continue to be part of the problem.

What the hell are you adding to the post.
Are you kidding Me!
Drunk Driving compared to lifting kids sticks.
I said violent hits and checking from behind should be enforced.
I watched 18 penalty's get called in a game and only about 4 of them should have been called. A Tournament game. Penalty's are 7th tie breaker. I would be shocked if the tournament has ever used it to break a tie.
So please understand Dear Ref ol' Mighty. Give the game back to the Kids and Most Parents won't have to get drunk after watching a game you called. 18 penalty's.
All the rules did is make a Team lose a point, if they get 6 interference calls against them & now the game gets more Violent because they already lost a point. So they will go out and hit the otherteam as hard as they can. I have witnessed this everytime and if they would have added at the end of the game if the REF feels the game was never out of control they can still earn the point. If The Coach knows he still can gain a point back, he should call off the dogs. Otherwise I don't think he is going to say alright Kids we lost our point now and the Ref is really upset that we need to stop lifting kids sticks or else. What your going to put them in the penalty box again. Well instead of lifting a kids stick it turns into slamming a kid against the Boards to slow them down.
Throw a Coach/Player out if you feel he hurt someone on purpose. Don't call a kid on a faceoff for lifting a another kids stick and then compare it to Drunk Driving.
If you sign game sheet and on the form it has a spot for Game remarks.
That's where I feel if teams are being cheap then the league can monitor each team and take it up with Assoication/Coach.
Just Ref the Game the same. Not District 6 gets 9 more minutes of Ice time because the refs will be calling more penalty's. Thats all I was trying to show the difference in leagues. Sorry Dear Ref please get thicker skin and thicker Glasses. You REFS ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM , BE PART OF THE SOLUTION. Call the game the same.

I am not sure where to start, either.
I believe you are upset about the implementation last year of the stricter adherence to rules adopted by USA Hockey (MN Hockey for the most part cannot and does not adopt rule changes).
The calling of penalties is done by each group of officials (yes they have been instructed to call the interference, holding, slashing closer), but it is NOT a change in rules. It is just coming from the top that kids need to skate better to play the game better.
Yes, you are right, this method of reffing a game makes it harder for weaker teams to slow down strong teams, but it is not a rule change. It IS a directive to coaches and associations to work on skating and proper checking methods.
The game still belongs to the kids (most of the time, I have seen refs put the spotlight on themselves). But the game has not changed.
I believe you are also referecning fair play points. The point of chasing/head hunting (whatever description you wish) after taking the limit in penalties is so flagrant I hope it is absurd. Any coach that wluld allow it, and worse, call for it; should be suspended. And are suspended if it occurs in D16.
There is no MN Hockey limit on peewee and bantam games.
Each district establishes how its league games will be handled. D16 plays 17 minute stop time, with resurface at 1st or 2nd period for peewees and bantams. Girls (14 & 12) play 15 minutes. We have the opportunity to do this and based on the amount of time spent in the car it makes sense.
Invitational tourneys can pretty much do what they want as teams participating in scrimmage games.
My suggestion to you is to get involved with your local program on some volunteer basis, obtain a copy of the MN Hockey handbook, and talk with some hockey people that have been around for more than a couple of years.
I understand your frustration, but you should remember it is a kids' game, not their parents'.

Thank You. Again this is only about some refs take the rules to the extreme. Police don't pull you over for doing 31 in a 30 MPH, Just so you don't get any Idea's about doing 55 in a 30MPH. Refs should always call things that impact the play and if a team is playing dirty should let the Coach Know this needs to stop. The game I was Talking About was never dirty and Had 50 minutes in penalty's and a checking from Behind came after a handfull of penalty's had already been called. No my kid didn't get the penalty. Thank you again for your insight.

Your topic is misleading, but following new or old rules has been a point of contention for teams as long as I can remember.
To use your analogy of the 31mph in a 30 zone, coaches and teams "should" be able to read the officials inside of the first 5 minutes of a game. If you go through an area with stricter enforcement, what do you do? Adjust your behavior, right?
If the awareness is raised by the teams to the new standards of play, which everyone should be zoned in on by now, there should be no problem playing the game inside of the officials calling style for that game.
It would be great if we had perfect and consistent official for all youth games, but then reality would have to set in..
If you've ever witnessed a youth level coach yelling at a young official, it should help everyone understand why over 50% of those young officials figure out it's not worth the hassle and don't turn into a more experienced, more mature game caller.

Go to the USA Hockey web site and view the New Standards of Play video. I believe USA Hockey did a great job of getting the word out to officials and coaches, they are required to watch it and it is part of the seminars and annual meetings. Unfortunately, the parents, and players are not required to watch the videos. Remember, USA Hockey Officials are required to certify annually, coaches every three years, parents and player never. There is a great deal of information out there to assist in educating the public on USA Hockey initiatives, at what point does USA Hockey call their efforts good enough? This goes back to one of my posts in which I encourage the review local associations with regard to their ACE coordinator to assist in these issues. As previously stated, the rules have not changed only the standards in which they are called. Think about the ripple effect if the strike zone where changed in baseball. I am not entering this argument; I am only trying to help point people in a direction that may help better understand what has transpired over the past couple of years. Is it frustrating, yes but it is what it is. If you have additional concerns that you would like to vent, feel free to contact Matt Leaf directly, Officiating Supervisor USA Hockey.
strict rules are one thing but their is alot of really bad calls. what can be done? its really to bad that it has to be that way but heck i see it watching the wild games. they will show a replay and its just a joke on some of the calls and this is at the pro level! i live in the north and its called pretty loose with the exception of thief river falls. the refs their are terrible!
Statsman101, the officials should only call the violent stuff and let the kids play? Let me give you a situation that happened this weekend that should open your eyes a little.
My son is a junior and plays HS hockey and we had a three scrimmages on Saturday. Near the end of the first game, he was injured and had to sit out of the rest of that game and the next two. A player from the other team took his skates out three times with his stick while skating to a loose puck in the corner. On the the third trip in the same shift, my son laid on the ice in obvious pain. After the whistle blew and he made it to his feet, the official raised his arm and called a penalty on the other player.
Now if the official would have called the first or second tripping offense instead of "just letting them play" my son would not have had to take a trip to the emergency room to x-ray for a broken collar bone. The team would not have to figured out who will replace him in the lineup for this weeks opening games and wonder how long he will be out.
Call the freakin penalties as they are instructed to call them by USA Hockey and we could avoid a lot of injuries.
BTW, if your pissed off because a team might lose out on a trophy because the seventh tie breaker had to be used, I got a bunch of trophies collecting dust that you can have. If your a player, learn to skate better and develop your skills to keep yourself in position. If you're a parent, just sit back and relax. Its just a game and enjoy watching your kids play. They will be out of youth hockey before you know it.

i see your point rlstars. i like the games called tight but the refs have to have clear guidelines. i was in thief river falls for a bantam tourney this year. two penalties where called for no reason what so ever. three minutes later my son was skating down beat a kid so he sticks his knee out (which we all know can cause serious injuries) what do you know no call. so what people complain about when they call these games under the so called new rules it just gives the refs more leway to make stupid calls and they still miss calls that should be made. really how do you miss someone throwing a knee on a puck carrier at center ice? so all im saying is cut the B>S and make the calls that should be made.

Sometimes the best indicator of a 'badly called' game is how many penalties were called compared to other situations. In the case referenced from this weekend where there were 50 minutes in penalties in one game (peewee level), I checked and those same two teams in other games had very few penalties (I believe it was 8 minutes each in there other games). It seems highly unlikely that those teams were that much different in the one game so the more likely thing is that that particular set of refs were calling things much tighter and probably making some bad calls in that game.
Although it is very frustrating for players, coaches and fans it is one of many human elements in a fast pace game and no matter what we do or say, it is going to continue to happen. There are times that you will even hear a ref say that they made mistakes in a game and admit that they made a bad call. It is what it is and it is part of the game.
I agree with the earlier post that said that teams need to recognize early on that, for whatever reason, the refs are calling things 'tight' and make the adjustment. It's always easier to blame the refs (and sometimes they deserve it) but a well coached team will be able to make the adjustment.

They will be out of youth hockey before you know it.
I also believe that the game needs to be called consistent and fair from the 1st drop of the puck, a penalty is a penalty call it.
By having control of the game right away it prevents the game from getting out of control later.(In most cases)
It's better to have a 1/2 dozen trips or slashes, or interference calls early, then to end up with misconducts later on in the game, because players will start taking it into their own hands to settle things up.

Biggest complaint about refs in D16 is Warroad.
But the biggest problem in reffing in D16 is coaches. Some parents are problems but it is not easy to categorize by community - only certain aage and level groups within certain communities.

Sorry to hear about your son. If My kid would have done that to your Kid He would not have been allowed to play hockey anymore. Not By Ref, By his parents. My Kid plays hockey he doesn't try to put a kid into the Hospital. So I'am sorry if you didn't see that I said call the tripping Penalty's and any Violent stuff. If the Ref feels these are intentional. Throw the Kid out of game. I saw 14 penalty's for Interference. Not knocking Kids down or trying to hurt anyone. All the Other games we had 2 penalty's in 1 game and 4 in the other. So I was trying to point out the difference in Refs. Same Team (different Refs). I have seen these Refs and they call a ton of penalty's. I just wish they stayed consistent. Tie breaker for Penalty's listed 7th to me the Tournament doesn't take it serious by putting it 7th. Put it 1st and you will see coach's change how the Kids act on Ice. But puttings Goals Scored, Goals Allowed shows where they rank in importance. I hope you can look at what I'am saying and understand we both want the same thing. 36 minute Game 50 minutes in Penalty's. That's not the Hockey game I watched. 50 minutes in penalty's is something out of the Movie Slapshot. Not A Pwa Game.
As it turns out, nothing is broken but he will be out for at least a week. Can't Never Tried wrote:RLStars... One thing parents and spectators need to realize is while they are watching one or two players around the puck, the officials are watching 10 skaters. Your view from the stands is much, much different from those on the bench and the ice.
Statesman, thanks for your comments, but do you really want interference to go uncalled? I for one do not. I'd rather see speed, skill and positioning win out over size, reach and stickwork. I still say relax and enjoy the few short years you have to watch your children play the game. After all, it is a game.
Better yet, have your player start officiating when and if they are old enough. I gareentee you'll easy up on what you believe the officials should and shouldn't call. It changed me.

In some situations, players are tripped through no fault of their own but rather the placement of a stick by another player. Why should the player that is tripped, or the official for that matter be obligated to just say “That’s OK, watch your stick next time”. Furthermore, the player that is tripped is “penalized” (figuratively) for nothing that he/she did. Now, having said that, another role that official’s play is that of a coach/teacher. As it has been pointed out, there are times in which you need to look at the situation, age, and level of the players involved. There is a great deal more calls that could be made at the lower levels than what I think people are aware of, and “yes” there are calls that are made that maybe shouldn’t have been made. As the players age and the skills improve it makes it much easier to make these types of calls. Upper level players know stick control. They are also matured enough mentally to know when they are bending the rules.
I don’t want to nit pick, but one point of clarity that I would like to make is the intentional part of your statement. As a ref, I am obligated to insure that the game is played as fairly, and safely as possible. There are situations that intent cannot be discerned, nor at times is it relevant. With regard to tripping, there are times in which a player trips another player unintentionally. This is an important point to make, as there are times in which players, coaches, and spectators don’t understand why an official would call tripping on the player if A) it didn’t appear to be intentional, or B) it did not effect the outcome of the play. One initiative of the increased standards of play is to get the stick under control. Un-intentional trips, and high sticks are to be called, obviously with some common sense applied. It’s one of those tough love things that we have to do. I am left to assume that penalties like these are not being corrected during practices or controlled scrimmages due to the amount of time and focus available. This is not to put the blame on the coaches, but rather acknowledging the fact that time is limited and these are easy penalties to over look, when all of the other tasks are considered. Players and coaches are left to learn these lessons through trial and error. The net result is the players, and coaches are getting these lessons during games in front of parents, and spectators that get to witness the learning process first hand.Sorry to hear about your son.... So I’m sorry if you didn't see that I said call the tripping Penalty's and any violent stuff. If the Ref feels these are intentional. Throw the Kid out of game.

As one of the announcers in District 11 and working closely with the refs, I can tell you one thing.....
There are refs out there that shoot for 2 pages of penalties. I've gotten to the point, where I ask the refs before the game to keep it on one page in the book. Most are willing to cooperate if they can, but some make an effort to get two pages. They continue to skate over and ask how many lines are left. Its pretty amazing.
Let the kids play to a point. No need for our kids to take an ambulance ride.

Hmmm, I'm out of District 11 and I can tell you that it is not our goal to shoot for 2 pages. We may take a look at the book to see how things are shaping up or if anyone is getting close to 5 or a team close to 15, but we definately don't strive for it. I'm at all the meetings for the NEHOA and I can't recall where we have ever told our officials to call 2 pages. We know the new standard and we stick to it, end of story.bigpoppababy wrote:As one of the announcers in District 11 and working closely with the refs, I can tell you one thing.....

Those refs that are blatant about it should be reported to the DD and district RIC. They can discuss policy with them and get things straigtened out without a big incident. Or talk to the 'theref', he has his head on straight.

You want to know what # My son is? Call Me.
Why are you trying to pick up little boys on this website?
I think you traded in your old user name Gaborick 33 for Don Morelli. Good one. I thought you saw me at Burnsville Tourney, so you should know who I'am. Are you the father of the other Goalie on the Fire and worried that your Kid will not be back next year. You seem to be concerned with our goalies & the fires. A true parent of any AAA Team wouldn't be worried about little old Rosemount. Good luck to your Son. He will need it with you leading him through life.
