Gophers2487, that's a lose/lose situation. No matter what way you would have gone people aren't going to agree and be happy. At the end of the day you have to do what's right for the majority of the kids not just 3 or 4. So I applaud whoever made the decision and stuck to their decision, even though...

Hey Hockeychopper set up the all girls HDM day and i will be there. At the end of the day the only people that go to girls HS hockey games are the parents-grandparents-boyfriends and a few other people. My daughter plays and im at every game along with most of the other parents. I took my daughter ...

Doesn't appear there is much interest in this topic. Anybody else notice that FSN wouldn't even put a girls game on TV during HDM, at a time that was watchable at all. Pitiful statement about the value of girls hockey in Minnesota. Agreed! I believe in order to get girls hockey "part" of ...

If an association has board positions for a Mites director, a Squirt director, a Peewee director, a Bantam director, and a Girls director; inequality is built into the by-laws. Maybe, but... A lot of mites are girls, so the mites director serves girls and boys. A few squirts & peewees are girls...

Re: Taking Girls' Programs Seriously in Association Hockey

Here's my original post: At least the Girls' Program is taken seriously in Edina. We just had to switch our daughter from the Girls program in her association (in an unmentionable very large nearby city adjoining Edina) because that association just doesn't put the resources into its Girls program -...

2014 Duluth IceBreaker's Tourney Predictions

The Duluth IceBreaker's Tourney is coming up in a week, any predictions? Looks like a strong field as usual at all the levels.

Re: Slight variation on the topic

Great thread and the board is very informative. Thanks to all who participate. Our association has no U12A or U14 anything. My daughter is playing Peewee instead and made the Peewee A team instead of playing 12B. She has 1 year of Peewee remaining or can tryout for the HS team next year. Would you ...

How often is it the kids that decide to play HS vs the parent, especially as an 8th grader? Let's be honest, HS hockey is much cheaper than association hockey and practice is usually done by 5pm. I believe convenience is a big part of the equation. Let's look at a U14A team where the system is worki...

Tigers33 I have not coaches at the JV level but I tend to agree with others that JV in most cases (not all) is lower than that of U14A teams (some not all). One comment you made was about all good 8th and 9th graders play HS, there lies the problem. More so with the 8th graders. Why not have them pl...

I really think MN Hockey needs to work with all of the associations on recruiting new players and retaining the players we already have. It has to start with that U8/U10 level. From a Girls Hockey perspective we need to make sure we are building at the younger levels. I think there tends to be more ...

What about it flipping the other way, eliminating JV and having U14 as that feeder program for the HS Varsity? I know the likelihood of this ever happening are slim to none but why not? Increase U14 to U15 or even U16 and go that route. I know there are some very strong JV programs out there but tha...

Royals great commentary. Each situation is different from a demographic perspective, spot on there. I truly believe if every HS/Community had an association that could support an A and B team at each level through U14 that would be preferred by 90%+ of the HS coaches. I do agree a bit though however...

Does anyone remember a number of years ago why they went from a U15(I believe) to U14? Some of the things I've seen repeated in this thread is more on the social aspect. Why rush having a 13 or 14 year old kid in the locker room w/ an 18 year old. There was a previous thread a few years back that ta...

Girls JV vs U14A - Which is Better?

Looking for some opinions on what is better purely from a development perspective, playing U14A as an 8th/9th grader or playing JV as an 8th/9th grader? Throw out cost and convenience for the purposes of this conversation.

I have to agree with both of you on this one. Everyone in the state knows the programs Edina has both girls and boys. They also have population in which to pull kids from as well. I think they do a fantastic job in getting these kids into their programs and keeping them playing. Some of it is reputa...

We need more perspective like MammaLlama! These are the issues kids today have to deal with that weren't around years ago. All these different AAA teams, rankings from 20 different publications, the ranking of kids as young as 10 years old, where does it stop. There are many kids that choose to open...

I would say the bigger tourneys such as Edina Cake Eater, Duluth IceBreakers are the 2 "marquee" tourneys that come to mind. WBL, Wayzata, Stillwater, Fargo do a good job as well. There is a flavor for all teams depending on what you're looking for from a competition perspective vs a well ...

Some of the things we have done and are planning on doing are the community parades, try hockey for free day, etc. Those work from a marketing perspective and get the word out about girls hockey but not sure how effective it is in recruiting new kids to the program. Girls hockey has made huge strides over the years. No doubt Krissy Wendell was a super-star during the years she played. I truly believe win at all cost is front and center and player development is no longer important. As was mentioned in previous posts, Minnetonka has a fair play policy, which I believe is great. Let ALL the kids experience all the phases in a game. If we don't allow them to do so, they will never l...

Unbelieveable, but something that seems to be trending the wrong way when it comes to parent behavior. This is an extreme case but if things aren't done to deal with these types of issues, it will continue to happen and more often. In my opinion, these instances should ALL be investigated and it sho...
