FINAL RESULTS: 2001 Internet Wooden Tracked Roller Coaster Poll
Tonnerre de Zeus edged Shivering Timbers for the top spot this year,
claiming the title of top wooden coaster for an unprecedented third
consecutive year. Shivering Timbers shares Tonnerre de Zeus' lofty status
as having never finished lower than second in this poll, and the Michigan
ride gained considerably this year, leading for almost the entire month
and losing the head to head comparison by a single vote after a very
clearcut victory by the French ride in 2000.
Boulder Dash climbed to finish a strong third this year after debuting
last year at #5. Tremors regained the #4 spot after having slipped to #7
in 2000 and Megafobia overcame a head to head loss to its megaclone Rampage
to edge it for a spot in the 2001 top 5. On the other hand, it should be
noted that Megafobia was two narrow losses to non top five rides away from
retaining the #3 spot it had held for the last three years.
As seems to be the case each year, places 6-9 were very closely contested.
The Legend needed just one more person to have preferred it to Rampage to
break the 23-23 head to head tie and it would have edged ahead of Rampage
into 6th place. GhostRider overcame its head to head loss to Comet to edge
it for 8th place.
This year's new rides did not disappoint. Colossos, Cheetah, and
Cornball Express all made the top 20. Thundercoaster and Loup Garou were
rated by only a few riders with limited experience, but those few rated the
Norwegian coaster highly and the Belgian coaster as considerably less beloved.
Other top coasters that placed better than ever this year include
The Legend (Holiday World), which climbed eight spots to #7, The Boss, which
improved its rank by 12 positions from its 2000 debut to #33, Dania Beach
Hurricane jumped 7 spots to #27 and Viper, which had finished as high as #20
in 1999, but nine coasters that placed ahead of its #26 rank this year did
not exist in 1999. The 1927 John Miller gem The Legend (Arnold's Park)
placed a (relative) best ever 46th.
Phoenix, Comet (NY), and Vancouver's "Coaster" waged a close battle for
the top spot in the "Over 40" division. These three designs have been able
to withstand the tests of time. Coaster, the only one of these three
rides still located at its original site, is now threatened with relocation
or worse after the 2002 season.
It is quite amazing to note the number of rides originally designed and
built in the 1920's, 1930's, 1940's, 1950's, 1960's and one from as long ago
as 1917 still in the top 60. Equally amazing is that 32 of the top 44 rides
did not yet exist seven years ago.
Silverwood and Holiday World both have arguments for being the park with
the best wooden coaster duo. Tremors edged The Legend in ranking and
won the head to head comparison but Raven finished several spots ahead of
Timber Terror and won the head to head comparison convincingly.
Among the top five head-to-head: TdZ was preferred 6-5 over ST,
9-4 over BD, 3-0 over Tremors, and 13-1-1 over Mf among those riders
who had ridden both. ST was preferred 39-17-4 over BD, 16-6-1 over Tremors,
and 7-5-1 over Mf. BD was preferred 16-7 over Tremors but lost the comparison
to Mf 5-11. Tremors lost to Mf 1-2-1.

The "Favorite Steel" coaster finished higher than ever before in fourth
place, losing only the head to head comparisons with ST, TdZ, BD, Mf, and
Aska. Tellingly, the most popular of the new steel coasters are non-
inverting designs that exert similar negative and lateral g-forces to those
of a well designed wooden coaster.
Steel coaster fans: Bill Bussone is updating the steel ballot used in
1999 that, when completed, will allow me to conduct a steel coaster poll
for the 2001 season. Look for that poll in early 2002. We would like
to have a couple of knowledgeable people with access to non-US steel
coaster census information (in their heads or elsewhere) take a look at
the ballot when finished for completeness, correctness, and consistency

At the bottom of this file, all the coasters that received number 1
votes and the number of number 1 votes they received are listed along
with a little bit of commentary.
Unfortunately, an attempt at targeted ballot box stuffing by one
individual was detected and dealt with November 30th for the first time in
the nine year history of the poll. It would have affected the results.
Safeguards, likely to include limiting or eliminating access to early
returns by those who have voted, will need to be implemented next year.
Your suggestions on this topic are welcome.
Some changes were made to the way in which the results were calculated
this year in to order better identify coasters whose ranking is based on very
few votes, and to limit the effect those rides can have on the other coasters'
ranks. To that end, the minimum number of riders needed for a coaster to be
included in the official results in 2001 is three. The minimum to not be
flagged as having few riders is increased to five, but I again urge everyone
to always look at the number of riders (it is always provided) of each coaster
when you consider its rank. Also, any coaster pair whose head to head
comparison is based on only one mutual rider is not considered for determining
Wins, Losses, and Ties for ranking purposes.
The changes had little impact on the poll in general, but considerable
impact on a few less ridden rides and were made as part of an ongoing attempt
to protect the integrity of the poll. Thundercoaster was the ride most negatively
affected by the new method, it would have been 6th with the old accounting but
dropped to 23rd now that 1-0 comparisons are ignored. Hopefully, more people
will have ridden this coaster by next November and we will see which of these
ranks is more accurate.
The following results are presented in a tabular format showing 1994
through 2001 placements, giving a better feel for trends and consistencies
in the poll. When viewing this chart, one should expect a coaster's rank
to drop slightly from year to year due to additional coasters debuting in
the poll. Special attention should be paid to the RIDERS column as the
fewer the number of riders, the greater the margin of error.
Many of the coaster names have links to pictures. The pictures are on/from other
websites, contact those sites if you need usage permissions. Thanks to Ken

Below, the 2001 results are listed in more detail.
The columns listed are: RANK, COASTER NAME, PARK, LOC (two letter
abbreviation of state, province, or country), RIDERS (number of polltakers
who indicated they rode each coaster), W (head to head wins versus other
coasters), L (losses), T (ties), WinPct (winning percentage), and TiBk
(tiebreaker..head to head preferences between those coasters tied).
Special attention should again be paid to the RIDERS column when viewing
the results. In general, the rankings of those coasters with more riders
will be more likely to truly reflect the popular sentiment about a coaster.
There is a * in place of a rank for coasters with < 5 riders.
A blank line has been inserted where > (2/#coasters) WinPct gaps exist.
The program was run twice. Once excluding "My Favorite Steel" to get
the results for the wooden coasters so that they would not be affected
by it, and once including "My Favorite Steel" so it could be placed amongst
the wooden coasters.

I also ran the program using only this year's riding experiences. These
results are not very meaningful as there are MANY pairings of coasters
that no rider had ridden both of this year. As you can see, our poll
respondents had ridden an average of 18.9 woodies this year. That sounds
good until it is realized that when there are only about 1/2 as many ride
experiences it causes there to be an average of less than 1/4 as many people
who had ridden each pair of coasters (this year vs. ever).
Therefore, I want to be very clear that the following results based on
only 2001 ride experiences have a much greater margin of error and are only
included here because they may be of some limited additional interest to
some enthusiasts.
Actually, these results look more reasonable than they have in past years.
The Boss did reportedly run much better this year and that is reflected in
its rank. The Beast and Texas Cyclone also did much better with people who
rode them this year.

For an explanation of the tabulation algorithm and much more about this

Below are listed the #1 votes. Note that there are over 360 #1 votes, as
many people gave more than one coaster their #1 ranking. The ordering
approximates pretty well how a standard popularity poll might have turned
out, i.e. highly influenced by ridership.
As an example of the misconceptions this can cause, compare The Beast to
Boulder Dash. The Beast received 16 first place votes compared to only 14
for Boulder Dash so it must be better, right? Not so fast, the data from
this poll shows that 70 people indicated that they had ridden both of these
coasters and those people preferred Boulder Dash 60 to 10.
I don't mean to pick on The Beast (it is actually one of my favorites for
nostalgic reasons), I just wanted to illustrate the folly of using
straight popularity polls for ranking roller coasters.
