FINAL RESULTS: 2001 Internet Steel Tracked Roller Coaster Poll

Six Flags New England's Superman - Ride of Steel is the top steel coaster
in North America, Expedition GeForce of Germany's Holiday Park took the top spot
for the rest of the world. Unfortunately, only four people who had ridden the
German ride took the poll, and they only had enough experience for a comparison
to be made to about one third of the top 30 rides.
Cedar Point's Millennium Force and Six Flags Great Adventure's Nitro round
out the top 4. Alton Towers' Nemesis placed 5th, 1999 #1 Six Flags Darien Lake's
Superman - Ride of Steel and Busch Gardens Williamsburg's Apollo's Chariot tied
for 6th.
On the other end of the spectrum, Flashback stood out as unbeloved.
98 people filled out the poll this year (down from 115 in 1999) having ridden
an average of 68.5 of the coasters/categories on the ballot (up from 56 in 1999).
The ride forces 'poll within a poll' was a runaway endorsement of airtime,
preferably of the floating variety. Feeling out of control and the sense of speed
were next favored, with positive G's/loops and lateral forces far behind. The
top coasters among those who favored each of the six sensations are listed at the
end of this file.
The old Magnum v. Steel Force debate is still unsettled with 23
preferring the Cedar Point ride, 22 the Dorney Park ride, and 1 person rating
them as equal (although Magnum finished #13 and Steel Force #27).
Among the top four head-to-head: S-RoS was preferred 22-7-1 over MF
and 21-4-1 over Nitro, MF was preferred 22-10-1 over Nitro. The German ride
did not have a valid comparison to any of the other 3, but the one person who
had ridden it and Nitro preferred it to Nitro. It is interesting to note that #1 S-RoS
was preferred to current #6 (and 1999 #1) S-RoS 18-0-1.
The Favorite Wood Coaster category would be placed third amongst the steel
coasters, with people preferring #1Superman - Ride of Steel to their favorite wood
coaster 15-10-3 but preferring their favorite wood coaster to #3 Millennium Force
by a decisive 34-16-6 vote.
You may see all head-to-head comparisons between the 241 coasters
(including favorite categories) that had riders take the poll this year by
downloading the spreadsheet from the website.
The minimum number of riders needed for a coaster to be included in the official
results in 2001 is three. The minimum to not be flagged as having very few riders
is five, but I again urge everyone to always look at the number of riders
(it is always provided) of each coaster when you consider its rank. Also, any
coaster pair whose head to head comparison is based on only one mutual rider is
not considered for determining Wins, Losses, and Ties for ranking purposes.
The full 2001 results are listed below in more detail.
The columns listed are: RANK, COASTER NAME, PARK, LOC (two letter
abbreviation of state, province, or country), RIDERS (number of polltakers
who indicated they rode each coaster), W (head to head wins versus other
coasters), L (losses), T (ties), WinPct (winning percentage), and TiBk
(tiebreaker..head to head preferences between those coasters tied).
Special attention should again be paid to the RIDERS column when viewing
the results. In general, the rankings of those coasters with more riders
will be more likely to truly reflect the popular sentiment about a coaster.
There is a * in place of a rank for coasters with < 5 riders.
A blank line has been inserted where > (2/#coasters) WinPct gaps exist.
The program was run twice. Once excluding "Favorite Wood Coaster" to get
the results for the steel coasters so that they would not be affected
by it, and once including "Favorite Wood Coaster" so it could be placed
amongst the steel coasters.
Thanks again to Bill Bussone for updating the 1999 ballot so that a steel
poll could be run for the 2001 season.
