Hooking

Post by AHAAlum »

I admittedly hadn't watched a HS game until the tournament yesterday. I went to every game except Wayzata/Tartan. That said...

What's with the hooking? Was it this prominent in the regular season games as well?

I don't recall seeing it anywhere near this much last year and I was at every AA state game at the X. There are guys out there that don't even try to skate with a forward when they're beat. They simply try to get a hold of them with their stick and hold on for the ride until they give up the puck or lose it trying to fight them off.

Maybe I've been away from the game for too long, but to me that isn't skilled hockey.

High School hockey is becoming a clutch and grab sport. I know several coaches and they admit they teach this and "picks" on face-offs. The HS league needs to tell the refs to call it tight, just like the NHL and WCHA has done the past years.

Why do you think the Centennial vs. AHA game was so boring??

The NHL and WCHA have called tight games the last few years?

I must be watching some weird bizarro NHL and WCHA games then, because its just as bad as it always has been, in my mind.

Hooking

I haven't seen the WCHA or NHL crack down on this at all. If anything, I think they're also worse.

In regard to the Cent/HA game, I think it was more prevalent in that matchup than the others from yesterday. Although it happened a fair amount in each of them. I personally didn't find the game boring. There was some strong defense on both sides(yes, hooking helped each team).

Hell, the only little tricks I remember actually being coached were getting my stick under the forwards' breezer's and lifting up to throw them off balance and clear the front of the net. Oh, and doing the reverse along the boards to hold them in place for someone else to pick up the puck. Compliments of a couple former Bemidji State players from back in the day.

Hooking

Pretty pathetic. How can the players with skill stand out when this crap is allowed. Last time I read through the rule book grabbing is called holding, a penalty, and using your stick to impede a player is called hooking.

What a joke! It is no wonder that Europe produces so many skilled hockey players. Clutch and grab is the North American style of hockey.

I noticed that a lot so far this weekend. Very apparent when a defensive player knows hes been beat and outskated. I don't know how many times plays have been broken up and players hooked to the ice.

BTW, is scheids no longer a "legend in his girlfriends mind"? Just a simple mistake I hope

wbl_hock, not to fear. The legend of the legend still stands strong. The words need not be posted for it to continue...<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

The hooking and the non-calls in general are worse this year than I ever remember.

No wonder Forsberg is going to give up the NHL to go home and play in Europe.

Climbing up on my soapbox, so beware!I think it is just another example of the liberalization of society. You see it everywhere. In academics, schools try to bring the slower kids up, and the smarter kids down. Make everyone equal. After all, little jimmy will feel bad because he is not as smart or skilled in sports as other kids, and you can't have that. So, the answer is to bring everyone else down to that level. "Everyones a Winner" remember that Simpson's episode, when Bart was put in the remedial class, they played musical chairs with the same number of chairs as students. I think it has become the same attitude in hockey. Let the weaker skaters clutch and grab and hook, because then they can compete with the skilled players. The problem I see is that I think it arrests the further development of the truly skilled players, and those that work harder to get there.

I agree this hooking and holding is making the game of hockey ugly. I was absolutely sick to my stomach in the Breck vs Orono championship game. Orono got hauled down from behind on odd man rushes at least 4 times in the second period with no call, and I think it produced a goal the other way for Breck 2 or 3 times in the game. Also I think the fact that there was no call was a momentum killer for Orono who came to win the hockey game. I didn’t even see Breck throw a decent check that whole game, and every time they tried they got a penalty because they didn’t seem to even know how to check. But congrats to Breck anyway, they won by bending the hooking and holding rule every chance they got, good job, I’d be proud if I was them. Knowing that my team got outskated and outshot but won because we used our sticks in a way they weren’t meant to be used.
