Thanks for pulling that together. The only point I'll argue is Northfield as the #4, I think there is a less than 1% chance that happens.

Northfield is definitely a solid team with superstar power and has a win against BSM (AA #4) and Orono (a very good Class A team), but I can't imagine they will slot in above Edina and frankly even MG who hasn't lost to anyone ranked below #7 in the final rankings has a legitimate chance to come in as the #5. I don't think it's inconceivable that Northfield is unseeded in this mix.

For what it's worth, here's the strength of schedule data

https://www.leepagen.com/strength-g.htm

I'm not suggesting that Northfield isn't very solid, just becomes a more difficult sell to seed them when Edina's SOS is #2, MG's is #6 and Northfield's is #70.

Certainly could be. I was trying to decide if you reward a team for being 27-1. We'll see. And to be fair, SOS aside, we don't really know how good Northfield is. They did beat Lakeville South and Benilde, which isn't nothing.

Agree, it's fun to debate and will be interesting to see how it shakes out. I do think there are probably 3 tiers in this with Tonka, HM and Andover on the first tier, Edina, MG and Northfield in the 2nd tier and Rosemount and Roseau on the 3rd tier. In spite of that, still should be a couple of close QF games.

Girls hockey is definitely getting deeper, there should be a couple of competitive QF and the semis should be very interesting.

First time in a while its looked like a random draw as Tonka, as the #1 seed, gets Maple Grove. A tough first round matchup for sure.

Minnetonka had the same tough 1st round match-up last year against Centennial/SLP, and barely got by them. Here’s the field with their rankings, for what it’s worth:

Code: Select all

Hub	School/Team - Sec	LSQR	QRF	SOS
1	(1) MINNETONKA – 2AA	1	1	3
2	(2) HILL MURRAY – 4AA	3	2	4
3	(3) ANDOVER – 7AA	2	3	1
5	(4) EDINA – 6AA 4	7	2
8	(5) NORTHFIELD – 1AA	11	9	70
10	(8) MAPLE GROVE – 5AA	10	10	6
-	(7) ROSEAU – 8AA	25	23	20
-	(6) ROSEMOUNT – 3AA	26	21	33

Talk about a stacked tournament. Tonka, Hill, Andover, & Edina could all win it. Who knows what Northfield might bring to the table. MG is no slouch either. Interesting that, unlike the boys side of things, the distribution of really good teams in separate sections is shaping this tourney up to be amazing.

I know some other sports have now gone to seeding all 8 teams. It's been going on forever, but does anyone know the logic around only seeding 5 teams?

Star Trib story says they are considering changing it again this summer. They chose 4 originally, changed it to be 5 because they didn't want anyone to be ranked 8th of 8. But this is the state tournament, which is definitely a achievement in of itself. So there is no shame to be the underdog.

Take the ratings and bias out and go back to the old way the boy's tournament used to be set. The tournaments were set up years in advance by a random rotation of sections playing each other in the first round. Certainly made for some fantastic tournaments!

I miss it too. And I'd be all in favor of going back to leaving the Friday sessions with one semi-final and one consolation semi-final. Granted we'll never get that with Class A on the same day, but I thought it was more fun.

There is a reason we have progressed as a society. Going to this archaic way of tournament play is a disaster if you actually care about finding who the best teams are. If you are one of these "we need graphical representation" people then I guess it works. But for those who want the best teams playing each other on the biggest stage in women's high school hockey IN THE WORLD....then ranking 1-8 is the only reasonable solution.

I still stay home during A qtrs though. Will see how the other games go. It's usually only 4 vs 5 that's interesting. The Orono game is Zzzzz....

I'll go with Andover to win it. I'm more or less tossing out a name, but if I remember right Tonka doesn't seem to really play to their full potential of late. I think the loss that hurt was the year they lost to Andover in the final. Tonka had such a fantastic PP that was so fun to watch. I know nothing about HM this season.

It's ok to rank a team 10th in a ten team section. But if we rank a team 8th in an eight team state tournament, we all start clutching our pearls.

Not too bad of a crowd for the first game. It’s thinned out quite a bit for the second one.

I can think of 8 Section Runners Up who would LOVE to be the #8 seed. 😃😃

So question for those of you paying more attention than me. Should we be worried with the plethora of 8th and 9th graders on the varsity teams of the state participants? Andover is the only team I've seen made up of mostly juniors (a ton) and seniors. Which is what you normally see on the guys side. I know there are talented younger players that make varsity here and there, but not usually 6-7 per team. Makes me wonder if the youth numbers are falling too much that teams have to go to all grades just to make a varsity team. I would think this gives Andover a huge advantage as their players are just older, stronger and bigger. Thoughts?

Andover on a 5-5 power play pretty much the entire game. On the bright side, this won't help them prepare for tomorrow.

I'm watching the 2nd OT between Wilmar and Fergus as its more entertaining.

Did the depth reduce the amount of underclass over the years? I remember 7th and 8th graders years back but cannot speak to now. Plus I wish they still sold programs to have a closer look.
