Labor Day tournaments

An annual rite of passage for girls high school hockey - the labor day tourneys. What used to just be NAHA has now splintered into two events over the last couple years, as Kathy Pippy took advantage of an ownership transition at NAHA and resulting turmoil to start a competing tournament in Pittsburgh. She has been pretty successful, in the sense that she draws a much tougher field than NAHA does (with Little Caesars, Jr. Flyers, Jr. Penguins, Mission, Mid Fairfield, East Coast Wizards all choosing Pitt - pretty much the only strong team (not from MN) that plays NAHA is NAHA). There are Canadian teams at both events for the first time in awhile - should be interesting to see how they do. These are both marquee national recruiting events. Winny has chosen not to take sides, so sends teams to both.

NAHA (https://www.winter-hawks.org/page/show/ ... ament-2021 - the link says '21, but it takes you to the '22 page):
U19: JWC Black (primarily '05 '23s - most of the team that won U16 nationals - heavy overlap with Tradition elite league team this fall), JWC White
U16: JWC White
U14: OS Black

Pitt (https://labor-day-girls-fest.premiericeprospects.com):
U19: JWC Black (primarily '04 '23s - most of the team that lost a 1 goal game at U19 nationals to the eventual champion - heavy overlap with Empowers Performance elite league team), JWC White, Northern Elite Green
U17: JWC, Northern Elite Green, Northern Elite White
U14: JWC White, Northern Elite Green

I would expect Minnesota teams to do well at all levels.

You must be in the inner circle of the Brodt/Brown group. Nice of them to post the "Girls" Elite" League rosters for the rest of us. The Boys have been posted for 6 weeks. Some things never change.

I feel your pain. Not inner circle, but know a few things and just trying to share a bit of information for fans of the girls game.

Thank you. Too bad Brodt/Brown group doesn't feel the same.

Wow, this board has some juice in the hockey world. Elite League rosters are now posted...at least the locals.

Interesting that the Tradition Mortgage team - which has already won the league and will represent MN in the 19U Division National Tournament in the Spring - only has 8 forwards rostered. I'm surprised St. Martin didn't get placed with that group...she's on the MSP Magazine team that has already won the league and will represent MN in the 16U Division at the National Tournament in the Spring.

The short roster for Tradition is puzzling, but I’m guessing avar, Leonard and Sandberg are the missing parties. Sandberg is hurt, not sure about the other two. Empowers us missing boerger and brown from the Andover line.

Assuming I’m right about the eventual full rosters, I don’t think Tradition wins u19. They might, but empowers is better in goal, the top end forwards are better, and traditional is probably slightly better at d, on average. Regardless, should be very good hockey when they play. Both should be better than shattuck, in my opinion.

You have to go into GameSheet, it's all there, but a bit of a pain to extract (and it's too nice of a day for me to attempt that today)

Ahh! Thank you - they publish "standings" on the main website with links to stats, etc, but they're empty. Found it now - standby...

At NAHA (tier 1 only):

U16
JWC White - 5-1

Notable performances:
Horton (Edina), Mack (Tonka), Gray (BSM) among event leaders in scoring.

Just for reference on tourney quality:

NAHA
# of teams with (+, -) double digit goal differentials:
14s (2, 1) (OS +22)
16 (4, 5) (JWC +10)
19 (7, 6) (JWC Black +10 and JWC White +14)

Pitt
14 (5, 2) (JWC +16)
17 (5, 2) (JWC +11 and NG +10)
19 (2, 2) (JWC Black at +16)

From this stat (which I made up, but seemed like a reasonable way to look at it), looks like the 14s may have been more competitive at NAHA, and the OS team just steamrolled through it. The 16/17s was a bit more balanced at Pitt, and Hemp's goaltending (and the team D) led a solid but unspectacular offense to victory, and the 19s field at Pitt was much stronger than NAHA.

In terms of overall performance, JWC teams went:

14s
10-2

16/17s
10-2

19s
15-6

Overall
35-10

Minnesota represented itself pretty well

Not sure if you meant Proctor as in the Mirage, but Taylee is from Hermantown and still skates with the boys, but figure she will be moving back to the Mirage after this year...

Thank you! Was guessing on high schools for some of the younger kids - appreciate getting it cleared up (and the spelling).

Absolutely no worries; thank you for pushing these updates. I only commented as I know the Proctor/Hermantown discussion can generate a ton of responses. :D
