That would be too much of an ego blow to Russo to admit there might be something else besides the elite league.bchlhockey wrote:Question:
Why doesn't the Elite leagues invite the Minnesota Blades to compete
in the Elite 1 and the Elite Development leagues?
IMO, it makes sense to give more MN kids some exposure versus
the Colorado Rampage.

elite
OK, so based on a few chat strings here:
The league is run by HS coaches, coached by others they've come to know thru the sport over the years or their assistants. they put the players in uniforms that making the kids into moving billboards and then have their parents decide who gets credit for the goals and assists and leave penalties off the scoresheets. then that info gets posted on the website for scouts and coaches at the D1 and Jr. levels to see.
nice.

Re: elite
Don't know about Elite league, but this year, the player's parents aren't running the clock or keeping the score sheet during D-league games. The league is paying two or three booster clubs to staff the box and sell tickets (e.g. Eagan Girls Hockey Boosters). The booster clubs, in turn, are getting their parents to volunteer their time as a fundraiser.Sartellcelly wrote:OK, so based on a few chat strings here:

So problems with accurate score sheets might have more to do with people in the box with limited/no previous experience, rather than parents cooking the books for their kids.

Saw the live billboards in Blaine this weekend. Ugly looking jerseys and not much better play.
Who can explain how the Elite D works? Besides having an "All Star" team play, how do kids that played Bantams last year get selected to play in this league as a 9 or 10th grader? How do the political powers that be pick an All Star team when the league has played one weekend? Some noteable names on the roster that played Bantam A last year. Politics perhaps at this level???

My initial thought was they'd know of some players through the Advanced program, but then on second thought I realized that still starts at 15's so viewing of players and/or selection process wouldn't start there either.. I guess they're (apparently) keeping tabs on first year bantams and figuring from that. That is if we're going to say this is done outside politics, which clearly isn't the case...Nuts&Bolts wrote:Saw the live billboards in Blaine this weekend. I'm not entirely sure what the break-down is of players (from high school teams) to league participants, but it'd be interesting to see. For the Elite D League that is.
If you look at the roster (and the player stats) of this "Elite D 'All Star'" team, and have been around hockey very long, ... perhaps little Johnny didnt make the Elite team so Daddy got his insider buddies to put this team together.Nuts&Bolts wrote:Saw the live billboards in Blaine this weekend. Just a thought but seems that any extra team that should have been put together should have been kids that actually tried out for Elite League.

My understanding is that high school coach recommendations do influence who gets invited to tryout for Elite D. And while a high school coach wouldn't have coached a 9th or 10th grader coming out of Bantams, at least some of them run summer training programs that include the younger kids.Nuts&Bolts wrote:Saw the live billboards in Blaine this weekend. From what I heard, this D-league all-star team was put together rather quickly and unexpectedly because Elite was short a team for the Superrink games. Bit of a mess, since there were already 96ers and 97s in D-league playing in the U-16 tournament this weekend, as well as the "normal" number of D-league call ups to fill the Elite rosters.
A lot of really short benches in the D-league games this weekend, even with all of the alternates playing. Perhaps the ample playing time was a nice consolation prize for the kids who didn't get the call.

Wasilla, interesting idea that would never happen but would be fun and actually competitive to have a team of senior "have nots" that were cut or didn't get the "Elite" tryout to play in this showcase against the "Elite" teams. Would be way better than an All-Star JV/Bantam team, and would probably fare no worse than 500.
