Re: breck wins
Wow, what a period. That was some exciting hockey! Classic matchup too between the blue collar Packers and the "Daddy's money" private school team.

Re: breck wins
You can't find one much better than that. Just outstanding. Kudos to both Breck for their perserverence and SSP for never giving up, even in the final seconds. Great hockey!

Re: Great Game!
One of the funnest games to watch ever. Alex Stalock was unbelieveable. Good to see his brother Nick get the game tying goal. You hate to see the game decided by a fluke goal like that but that's hockey. I feel fro that poor SSP defenseman that unwittingly put it in. Great Great Game!

enough
I have an idea, how about we get through one thread without blasting private schools? Are you that threatened? Private schools exist all over the world and they're not going anywhere. Get over your inferiority complex. It is clear, especially after watching that game, that an argument about private school advantage is outdated and ignorant. Great game SSP.

Dee
Good thing Robbie Dee got the winner. He was headed for "goat" status after that stupid penalty (late hit; unnecessary shot to the head) which led to the SSP PP goal. That was a terrific 1/2 period of hockey.

Re: enough
Hilltopper9
I think that DoRight was just commenting on the match up. The "rich kids" vs the "lunch bucket kids". Thats OK. Isnt it?

Re: Dee
It should have been a major penalty. The hit took the kid's helmut right off. The refs discussed it, but never ended up making it a stiffer sentence.

For the record, Dee didn't get the final goal, Meyers of SSP did. It was a horrible way for Stalock to lose this game, with Meyers shooting the puck into the net. After all the excellent 1-2 saves 1-2-3-4 saves, and even 5 rebound saves at a time; it is a horrible way for the game to end. The poor kid was outstanding, he had control of the game, and were it not for his own man being on him in the net on the second goal, and the Meyers goal, the Packers win 2-1.

If SSP had played the whole game with the intensity they showed in the last 8 mins or so of the third, the game would have been an easy SSP win.

Breck was not all that impressive, and although I know its highly unlikely they'll win, this is one SSP fan cheering for the winner of the Orono/Hibbing game.

But the game is over, Breck moves on, and for SSP the streak lives on... So many appearances, not one championship. This year would have been their best chance, but the jinx lives on.

As I post this, I just saw Hibbing take the lead, maybe they do stand a chance against Breck! Go Hibbing!
Puckster

www.wildpuck.com

The jinx
It is amazing. They have lost so many games like that to quality opponents over the years. They have also won a lot of them too.

But year after year, they beat say an Edina in the quarters and then lose to a Grand Rapids in the semis in a game just like the one just played.

They have lost more games than anyone in tournament history but they also rank third in wins behind Roseau and Johnson.

Its tough to take. They just cant win 3 in a row

Re: The jinx
Oh and if anyone cares, the record in the back of the program for most goals against all tournaments is now at 242. 1 from the WDC game, and the 3 today.
Puckster

www.wildpuck.com

Daddy's Money
Joe, you are absolutely correct. Just a classic matchup, like the boxer vs the street fighter. If I meant anything negative against Breck, I wouldn't have used the " " around Daddy's money. I was quoting the anti-private school establishment.

Didn't mean to be the one to raise that flag when it hadn't been brought up yet.

Re: Daddy's Money
As far as I heard, neither school's fans went to that level of jeers. I don't remember hearing any of those kind of chants, or the other ones, and I think both student sections should be commended. Then again, I was sitting up higher in the corner of the rink, so maybe I just didn't hear it.
Puckster

www.wildpuck.com

Cheers
You are correct, none of those cheers were used. In fact, I don't recall many cheers coming from the SSP fans. They did not seem too excited and were seated for almost all of the game while the Breck fans were on their feet the whole game.

Re: Cheers
This SSP fan was on his feet and pacing the whole game. What a game!

Re: Dee
The refs don't have the balls or guts to assess a major penalty in that situation. The Breck player cross-checked the player in the head on top of being from behind. Just watch the replays of the hit. That's leadership for you. No balls to make the correct call. Maybe it will take a player to break his neck for people to wake the heck up here.

By the way, what kind of man hits a player from behind?

edgeon
Hey bud, i guarentee Breck would beat your spuds on any givin day. A and AA hockey are becoming gradually more evenly competitive. Brecks a damn good hockey club and the only team i think that can beat them is Centenial right now.

Go Fultons!!!

hitting from behind
REFS THAT HAVE THE BALLS TO MAKE THAT CALL OR ANY OTHER CORRECT TOUGH CALL,DON'T GET ASKED TO REF THE STATE TOURNEY AGAIN.

Another great line...
ChrisJ does it agin! Cracked me up.

The A tourney continues to get better. Six quality teams and two developing programs make for a great tourney. Roseau, Greenway, etc. take note. No slight to play in this one. Thanks to SSP for making the move, raising the legitimacy of A hockey and giving us a classic performance - even in a loss.

We lose sight sometimes
I didnt get to see the game but your posts and the people Ive talked to describing it are almost as good.

If felt pretty weird when SSP decided to participate in A. It felt like somebody just grabbed the channel changer from me.
But no, seriously, it had an effect. It was like somehthing had ended.

So, they get to the A tournament and beat WDC. Big deal, who cares, what are they doin beatin up on some hyphinated hockey team. Then ,yesterdays game.

Did anybody care if it was an AorAA game? Was the excitement less. The tears less wet. It was 40 kids playin in March. What else is there?

"We need one true champion". What the hell is that? Does that mean we need the team every body thinks will win to win. So, if Centenniel wins tonight, people wont know who the best team is because there is also an A champ? You mean, you cant tell?

Way to go Packers. Maybe somethin has begun.

Re: We lose sight sometimes
My sentiments exactly. I was disappointed when SSP decided to move to A, but yesterday's game was just as exciting as any AA game I've ever watched. It didn't matter one itota if it was A or AA.

Re: We lose sight sometimes
Well they can comfort themselves in the fact that they played well throughout the tournament. They made their fans proud. They played Breck tougher than any team in the tournament, they battled back from 2 deficits to tie the game late, (2 goals against Breck, 3 against Hibbing). Alex Stalock had an incredible tournament. All in all the team played really well, and even though it was the A tournament, it was still very exciting, and I am very happy for the kids to get a chance to participate in it.
Puckster

www.wildpuck.com

Re: hitting from behind
puckstopper 30-

"REFS THAT HAVE THE BALLS TO MAKE THAT CALL OR ANY OTHER CORRECT TOUGH CALL,DON'T GET ASKED TO REF THE STATE TOURNEY AGAIN."

You are exactly right. Refs that call penalties don't get called back because they aren't letting the players decide the game. I've been told that by those in the know. Nevermind that those players have to cheat and break the rules to get the edge.

I get a kick out of people who say penalties shouldn't be called if they are after the play or if it is in the last five minutes of a game. Funny, I'm reading through the rulebook now and I must have passed over that exception. If it is a penalty in the first minute it is a penalty at any time of the game. If you have to cheat to win, you frickin suck. If the refs don't have the balls to enforce the rules, they suck worse. Will it take a broken neck to change the "State of Hockey"?

How about that check from behind in the second period of the Orono/Breck game?

What a game!
Just got a chance to see this game on tape yesterday. Best game of the tourney hands down. Joe, if you want a copy of the game let me know.

I was not a fan of the two class system when it started but I'm warming up to it. We get twice as much hockey over the week and the opportunity to see games like this one. Another point that someone I talked to this weekend made was that there is a greater disparity in talent in Class A so the good players stand out more and get the opportunity to make great plays. Watching Wheeler wheel through and around the SSP defense to set up Breck's first goal or Stalock diving across the crease to make a spectacular stop would seem to prove his point.

You could make the argument that both Breck and SSP should be in class AA and I think a Breck-Centennial matchup would be a great game but in the end all that matters is that we got to see a lot of great hockey this past week.
