Machine -- I dunno 'bout those UMD thoughts. A player from the Cal Selects, more Euro national teamers & some quality Canadians...we'll see, but I'm thinkin' the class as a whole is decent at least, and could prove to be much better than that.

I also think we'll see UND landing better & better talent on a steady / continuing basis and become a WCHA contender in a short time span (relative to the time spans of a few other WCHA teams historically) that is.

I think the current / ongoing recruiting class is a pretty clear indicator of what's to come regarding competition for the talent out of the Minnesota HS pool. Just a theory of mine but I think the U is going to have increasing difficulty landing the top in state talent. Quite a bit of evidence to indicate that already. The competition is really heating up for those players. I think UND & UW (in particular) are very likely to improve upon their previous success at recruiting out of Minnesota HS, the eastern schools too.

Main point, having increasing / larger numbers of quality players to "go around" is nothing but great news for girl's / women's hockey.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ookyone at: 8/26/05 4:58 pm

I am not sold on Ledl or Haskins. The Fin sounds like she has been to the top of what they have to offer what ever there level compares to ours I don't know, but Trepanier is someone that will be solid on D. Someone probably knows more about the girl from Eastern canada they have too. Supposed to be a big scorer but I don't know who she is?

UMD usually brings in old and experienced ladies from Canada who ALWAYS seem to be in the mix. My comment on "BAD" was a poor call but I would say less than exciting until "WE" can see them.

Great comments about the U slowing down and the others moving up. It has begun to happen and will be more evident this year.

WCHA Recruiting

Post by ARM »

On a year-to-year basis, recruiting success must always be measured in part by the number of scholarships available. For example, as of last season, UND was only up to 9 of the allotted 18 scholarships. So if their classes did not compare well to others, they had less bullets to fire. This year, if Minnesota has less to give, that contributes greatly to a "slowing down".

Personally, I'd rank Wisconsin above St. Cloud for sure, and probably Mankato, who have had a harder time retaining recruits.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... nhs>ARM at: 8/26/05 5:59 pm

Lest anyone misinterpret, I'm not implying anything resembling a long term, or even short term recruiting "downfall" for Minnesota. Just that I expect better chances for other programs to land top Minnesota players and increasing instances of that actually occurring. The biggest influencing factor being larger numbers of top talent available. A natural byproduct or sign of growth for the sport...and the Gophers will still get their share.

A little lull in the early commitment frenzy. Is no news good news? I'm hoping so...just three off my original recruiting "wish list" remain.

Edit: Had to update my "remaing wish list" number.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ookyone at: 8/29/05 4:31 pm

I believe Christina Lee has verbally commited to Minnesota State-Mankato.

Having no idea myself how many, if any forwards might fit into Minnesota's current recruiting needs, I'd say Ms. Jones and Ms. Buganski would probably be the top two remaining (possibly) at this point. Keep in mind there are likely to be a number of other quality players the coaching staff is aware of that I / we are not.

They're probably still in need of defenders from this current class...in state I think Berit Johnson is the top remaining (again, possibly) player. Although, as others have alluded to, It's a reasonable "guess" she would be looking at an eastern / Ivy League program. I have two nephews who are graduates of The Blake School and have attended graduation ceremonies for both. I got the distinct impression there that Blake students are prepped for furthering their education at the more prestigious / higher profile institutions of higher learning.

Agreed that all on that list are great players. They (and others) also made this list:

<a href="http://p074.ezboard.com/fmnhsfrm7.showM ...

Yeah, there is a ton of excellent forwards in this class. I said before, if circumstances were ideal this is a time when you'd have room for 5-6 of them. I saw this perhaps less than ideal situation developing a year / two ago (all ya have to do is look at a Gopher game program & the roster). Accordingly I've half begun to shift my attention down the road a ways...hmmm, those SSM twins...Callie Dahl , and many more.

Non ideal is right. This is the most talented class of players I've ever seen in MN, but that doesn't say a lot b/c it seems each year is better than the years prior.

I honestly beleive that this class is loaded, and will be better than the next few sheer depth wise. this year is a strong F class. The following is amazingly deep on D.

Maybe that's the next topic - best class by position...

I just got off the phone with a WCHA head coach and they said they FELT that the U missed the boat BIG TIME and was VERY slow or APPREHENSIVE in their attempt to pick up Thunstrom. This coach felt they were nuts, and thought she will be THE best forward coming out this year and DI speed ready for the big game, unlike many college freshman they said will be good in a "few" years.

U Losing Thunstrom

Post by ARM »

The coach that you spoke to doesn't have 3 players with college eligibility remaining off in pursuit of a spot on the Olympic team. That situation forces Minnesota to be less aggressive in their recruiting than they might otherwise like to be. I'm sure the Gophers would have loved to have A.T. in the lineup next season, and in a more typical recruiting year, they could have backed that up with a scholarship offer. I'd bet that rival WCHA coach would be just as quick to call the Gopher coaches "nuts" if Darwitz or Wendell had a change of heart, decided to play one more year of D-I, and the U didn't have a scholarship waiting for them.

BEST PLAYER U HASN'T GOTTEN

Post by 411HOCKEY »

While I agree that Allie is fast and will do well speed wise in college, she lacks the physical bulk that is needed to really be a Big time player her first year. Hopefully she can adjust to the roughness of play at that level. I've just heard Ms Thunstrom complain too many times after a high school game about how the other team was "cheap" or out to get her.

Maybe some of the knowledgeable HS hockey fans can help me out. I never had an opportunity to see Lindsay Block from Chaska play a game in her HS career. What can Gopher fans look for / expect from Ms. Block?

I think Allie will contribute immediately in college. Just my opinion. I'm not saying she's as big physically as some other players, but from what I understand you can't hit/stop what you can't catch!

I'm too biased on Block to give a fair assessment. I'm just glad I got the chance to work with her at all - even in a limited capacity.

Same too on Johnson f/Way. Every time I saw her play, she impressed me more and more.

Both of these kids are great people too. Hard workers, etc.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ckeyfan at: 9/21/05 3:51 pm

BEST PLAYER U HASN'T GOTTEN

I agree that Allie is a great player with unbelievable speed, but to say that she is THE best player coming out of this class is unfair. She is for sure the fastest, but there are others who know the game better, are stronger, and mentally tougher. All things you need to make it. Best of luck to all of our Minnesota girls wherever they may end up.

I agree that there are more great players than just Allie - and each player is blessed with great, but differnt, strengths/talents/etc. I think that's why it's often hard to pick one "best" player.
