US WHL Draft

Post by farmtown55 »

The US WHL draft is this coming Wednesday. There were many 05’s who played high school this year, and obviously many more who did not. Let’s hear some thoughts on what MN 05 birth years might be drafted and why!

This must be new. Americans were recently just in the general pool, right?

Whitelaw killed it at SSM bantams this year , makes you wonder how he would have done on Rosemount varsity as 3rd liner? (Although he had mediocre BEL last Aug/Sept .) Size would have been an issue I suppose

Take no offense WM but Owen Hendrickson wasn't good enough to play a regular shift on D as a sophomore on Rosemount this season. He was a 3rd liner on the Irish team this past season. Whitelaw was in a good situation this year at SSM but he was no where near ready to compete against late 2001's and mostly 2002's or 2003's as a 2005. Honestly, I think he's has a hard time just adjusting to or competing with an age group up with 2004's.

Oliver Moore is cut from a different cloth IMHO. I would expect USAH to make a visit to Fridley in the near future.

Well, if your asking then power forward Austin Burnevik should be another for consideration.
He's listed at 6'1" but I believe he's actually taller and still has room to grow.
He played Varsity as a top 6 forward at Totino Grace, also as a 2005 Freshman.

There are 44 picks in the entire US draft . MN players have typically not gone high because of their unwillingness to play in the W. That being said I think there are 8-10 05 birth year MN players who have a great shot at being drafted. It won’t fall on talent alone as some players may have told scouts they have no interest and a big factor for WHL clubs is if a player is willing to come to their summer or fall camps. Here is my list of 05 players I believe may get drafted. In no particular order.

William Whitelaw SSM
Gracyn Sawchyn SSM
Austin Burnevik TG
Oliver Moore TG
Wyatt Olson OMG
Aidan Willis LVS
Ashton Dahms LVS
John Novak LVS
Jack Hochsprung LVS
Joey Sylvester Sibley/CDH
Jake Fisher CDH
Carsen Musser Fairmont HS
Ty Hanson Hermantown
Jayson Shaugabay Warroad
Joe Gramer Moorhead

If they want to find him at home, they’ll visit Mounds View. He was an Irondale Youth Hockey player.

If even one plays in the "W" I'd be surprised.... not a normal path for most American dreams.. but again... everyone has a different path...

Normally, you’re right. But we’ll see. This is the first US draft and it appears to be largely a response to NCAA recruiting rules. These kids are 2-3 years away from getting college offers. May not be long in the grand scheme of things, but to a 14/15 year old these days, the W May be an awfully tempting route.
