7AA pre-season

Post by gr19 »

This is a thread for how 7AA teams have looked in scrimmages and jamborees. From what I've observed I think this section is going to be a major dog fight. I hope to get some reviews of Rapids from people at the IRC Jamboree tonight. After seeing that CEC beat Silver Bay 4-0 I think CEC will be what most of us expect. I do think the #12 ranking is a little high. Duluth East, where are your fans? I haven't heard a thing about the Hounds this whole pre-season. Elk River, same thing. Brainerd, yeah I've heard some things that might give reason for them to be an improved team, but I've heard it before and they rarely get out of the first round. So I'm still skeptical. That's not to say I don't have reservations about my own team, I need to see it to believe it. Anyways, enough rambling from me, lets hear from you.

ER in 7AA

Post by JLS 81 »

EREmpire,
Are the Elk River fans, players and coaches pretty upset about having to move to 7AA? Just curious as I have not had time to gather any input one way or the other. Personally I am looking forward to Elk River competing as the quality of your club should force teams in the 7AA to be all that much better should they wish to acquire the section championship. I do realize that it is a bit frustrating to be getting shuttled around so much as has been the case for Elk River and that is not really fair to any program in my opinion. I think you guys will spice up a Saturday at the DECC real nice come February: East, CEC, Elks, Brainerd would be some good hockey to see. That is assuming the "elkoholics" make the bus trip north in large numbers.

LOL..I got it but it took me a minute.

Sarsland said himself in the past that Elk River didn't belong in 7AA. Had nothing to do with how good they were or the comparative strength of those two sections, it was strictly a geographical thing.

I agree, but what were the options? Nobody wanted to move up. Greenway moved down. We needed at least one more team. St. Cloud would be the other choice, moving Tech and Apollo to 7AA. I don't understand the MSHSL's thinking on this. I bet many don't understand it.

It's been said before; declining enrollment numbers up here in the great north will eventually dictate one AA section stretching from Duluth to Moorhead. Just a matter of time. That's both sad and unfortunate.

One other solution comes to mind but I'm not going there...but it'd sure solve the problem of one team not playing another local team

In the meantime, 7AA is stronger this year with these two new additions. Looking forward to seeing some great hockey here at tDECC.

Lee
____________
Message Board arsonist since 2005

JLS 81 will be in for a nice surprise if he still likes a team that shows up with their lunch pail. He himself said the cancers are gone. And he's right.

If you go to section7hockey.com and go to the "grand rapids" page, yeah, you'll be hearing that a lot more than just opening the period. It's hard not to be optimistic with one of the top forwards in the country on the team. I'm just waiting for the games to start, but I'm giddy as usual. I think everyone gets puck fever this time of year.

ER in 7AA

Post by EREmpireStrikesBack »

Pretty much what Lee said. Its not a matter of being part of 7AA, its just that none of the teams are anywhere near ER. 4AA we got to play Osseo, MG, Blaine, Anoka, CR... the teams that were near us and that actually made sense. ER will play no matter where they put 'em and IMO will compete. I will say that it will be nice being able to shut Lee up come Section's time . But yeah, my only major problem with the shift is the pure geographical reasoning. The hockey may even be better than 4AA, but I just don't understand having to drive 2 hrs. Either way, it will be a great season and I can't wait.

Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls

Empire, you'll enjoy the atmosphere at the DECC for Semi's and Title game. It's a nice venue for the playoffs. Only thing is the ice is slow and soft. That's my only gripe, and it's Duluth East's home ice.

I think next year semi's will be in the Twin Cities.

This could be the case with other teams moving up into Class AA (Benilde, etc) and Greenway moving down. If that's the case maybe ER was moved because of the financial part of it. I'm not familiar with ER's program, but maybe they have a lot more money than other programs for traveling, so that would make them the better choice to move into 7AA.

The players in GR realize that people don't expect much of them, and it could prove to be a good motivator. Thing is Jared Smith is injured right now. They need him making plays with White. I don't why he picks Brainerd, a team that has NEVER beat Rapids.

GR19, maybe he picks Brainerd to beat GR precisely for the same reasons you believe GR will do well this year....because nobody expects them to do it.

No, he doesn't think GR has a good coach, and I whole heartedly disagree. Bruce is a great coach. This isn't the same as like CEC or East where I see valid reasons for those teams to be legit. With Brainerd I don't see it. Rapids has been to the Section final two of the last 3 years. Brainerd, what? One semi final appearance and Rapids beat them 7-1.

Grand Rapids & Brainerd

Post by kranky »

Hey FORESKIN, er I mean GR19, it looks like its going to be down to your T'chiks and my Worriers for dat 4th spot in Da section tourny. I know youben braggin 'bout how Da Worriers have never beat Da T'chiks, but your time to eat crow is close at hand! My schedule reads dat they have a game in Da Barnyard this year, get a hold of your buddy V-scout and we'll hook up at Da Elbow Club. Loser buys!

I'm not saying Brainerd won't be good. I am simply unaware of any reason to assume they will do well. One strike against them is all the complaining about their coach. Maybe it's valid. If people are gonna talk about Baker, and Sneep, which are decent players in their own right, why aren't they talking about Rapids that has many players at or better than their level. For instance I'll take Patrick White over Sneep and Baker together. I promise you White will be the most dominating player in 7AA.

Anyways, I have a feeling the folks in Grand Rapids are in for a pleasant surprise on Saturday. Enjoy the opening weekend of hockey peoples.

GR & Barnyard

Post by kranky »

Hey GR19, your right, White is a good player but you forgot Peltoma. I'll take Brainerd's top 3 players over Grand Rapids top 3. It will boil down to the supporting staff, goaltending and attitude.

I'll let Shep know to have baked crow on the menu at the Elbow Club if you come down from the tundra to show up in DA Barnyard for the game.

Hey Zer0, what do you think? You'd probably come down for a frosty one.

Peltoma, Sneep, and Baker aren't in the same league as White, Smith, and Stejskal. Seems Grand Rapids winning streak vs. Brainerd should prove that. That's my opinion. Also, look out for Grand Rapids sophmores, they are a talented bunch.

Not sure if I'll fly down during mid December. I'm thinking I might visit in Janurary. GR plays Bl. Jeff. and East at home, and at CEC. Not to mention the Wild have their longest home stand and the Gophers are at home back to back vs. Colorado College and North Dakota.

Same league?

Post by kranky »

GR19, the previously mentioned players are in the same league! The only question is who will win. Hopefully you can fly down for that crow dinner. Contact V-scout or Zer0 for details if you can make it. May the best team win.

This still leaves Duluth East, Elk River & Cloquet as the cream of 7AA. Anybody from Flake out there to make there case?
