Our daughter had a great experience with NHG last summer. Northland delivered everything promised and more. We would recommend it for any family interested in trying out the summer hockey scene for their player.

Our player had fun playing hockey with new friends (9 from other Minnesota communities and 5 from Canada). Her team may not have been "competitive" in all games, but the players learned, developed their skills and enjoyed their summer experience.

In addition, she was invited to participate in a four hour on-ice clinic hosted by NHG and put on by Gigi Marvin (with two of her Gopher teammates) - at no additional cost. Gigi also visited with the players on another occasion at the invitation of NHG.

Of course, we weren't under any false impressions that this was intended to be an "elite" hockey experience. But, it did give us a chance to see what other programs had to offer and whether pursuing an invite to an elite level program is even of interest.

Its a shame that others would rip NHG for giving more kids an opportunity to play summer (a/k/a "AAA") hockey. Like a poster in the boys' forum put it - "the more the merrier."

I agree 100% Northland provided everything they promised, and then some. If you think your kid is going to the Olympics (you are dreaming), then this program might not be for you.

Thanks for the kind words.

Our goal is to give players opportunities to play hockey in the off season at a competitive level and try to put the teams in tournaments that they will be competitive at to the best of their ability. It is a great way to stay active in the off season, meet some new friends, have fun in the spring and summer months playing the sport they love with not as much time, commitment, and cost as some other programs.

There was a tournament that some of our teams were at last year (not run by the NHG) at the last minute the tournament combined open and invite levels the day before the tournament at two levels so we had no choice other than to still have the teams go. Some scores were not great but the coaches used it as a positive explaining that this is what you need to do to get at the next level. Many elite teams practice much more than most of the NHG teams with some being together for many years.

I know that the Miken Cup Tournament in May last year run by the NHG, virtually every game was decided by just a few goals including an amazing 20 of 24 at the 12U level including every Sunday game being decided by one goal with four going to overtime. That is what is going to make the players better in my eyes, playing in competitive games.

Our teams do strive to improve each year. The coaches tweak their teams adding players during the winter season and at tryouts. Our 14U Loons team in its third season, 12U and 16U Ice Bucks team in its second season and 12U Pike in its first season did very well last year. I would say most of the teams were a pretty competive open level tournament team. I am very pleased with the coaches that all of the teams will have this year as well.

The Coyotes teams from the Mankato and Southern Minnesota region should be competitive right from the get go!!!

Gigi Marvin has also agreed to do some more with us again in 2012. And like last year there will be no additional fee for the girls in our program to for anything that is added involving her!!! That will be posted at www.aaahockey.co soon!!!

We hope to be a fun place for young girls and boys to play again in 2012!!!

Have a good day. NHG

Some parents have nothing better to do, or feel better about the programs they paid for by talkin s it. Keep up the good work Northland!!!! Anything that gives kids a chance to be involved is a plus for the kids.

NHG does offer playing time for players, BUT don't call them AAA then. Our team only played 3 others teams last year that should have been classified as a AAA team. The others were a waste of our time and money. Will not make that mistake again this year! Don't get me wrong, I agree that players should have the chance to play if they want. NHG does that for those payers. AND there were a few of their teams that were competitive last year. BUT the majority of them are just there to play hockey, not a AAA team. And that's OK.
