Fall Elite League

Post by NoWhining »

Heard that invitations have gone out. Question - are there tryouts? Is there any chance a kid can make a team if they tryout or are these teams locked and loaded.

Any team information available?

Thanks

There are tryouts. I believe you have to be invited to try out.

You have to be invited to tryout. Coaches make recommendations to the league and those are narrowed down by Elite officials based on other information they may have about the players including stats, scouting etc.. The tryouts are a money maker for the league but most all tryouts are usually money makers so you might as well get use to it.

Many spots are already filled with returning players from last year or with players that were given a spot on a team without having to tryout. Most of the 'no tryout' players got their spots based on their season play, performance at other tryouts like Advance 16 & 17, the exposure tournament or because their parents are 'best buds' with the Elite staff . You can look at rosters from last year to see how many returners there are and figure that they give away 3 or 4 spots prior to tryouts and the rest are open. For example, team SE had 9 seniors, 10 juniors and 3 sophomores skating last year. The 13 underclassman are likely to get a spot on the team leaving 9 spots open. Figure that they gave away 3 or 4 of those to skaters who don't have to tryout and you have 5 or 6 open spots for new skaters on that team.

Players invited to tryout will be fighting for those relatively few spots that are left but it is still a great experience and players should take advantage of it if invited to tryout. Competitive hockey with some very skilled players in a tryout helps prepare kids for future tryouts that they will need to do if they want to play hockey beyond high school. Many players also do earn spots from the tryouts but just be aware that many spots are already filled. It's always a good thing to be realistic going into a tryout but you also have no way of earning a spot if you never try.

Seek and Destroy - thanks for the info. Very helpful.
Do you know if tryout letters have all gone out? My kid has not receieved. Even if he did not make it agree it would be good experience. Wondering if it is possible to still get one.

Also, when are tryouts actually happening?

The entire tryout process is a joke for the Elite League. Money maker..period end of story. Any argument that you give me for them being a fair process is a lie. If John Russo likes you, you are in. That is all you need to know.

I am not close enough with the league to know if all the tryout letters are out but I would guess they are based on things I have heard.

One other option is the Elite Prep Development league (formerly Elite II) which is a great chance to play more hockey and get ready for the season. I heard that they now have a similar process where players are recommended by their coaches for a tryout (it use to be an open tryout). I don't think they have sent out their letters yet. Not quite the level of Elite league but still a good chance to play fall hockey.

The Elite II League is now the Elite D League and isn't really another option but the same option if what I've heard is correct. One organization with an Elite level team and a D League team. I even heard D League players may get invitations to play on the Elite League team on occassion. Kind of, well, a developmental team for the Elite team. There was an article in a recent LPH that laid out the plan. Hopefully there will be good information soon regarding how the teams will be named and how the D League fits together with the Elite League. Last year the Elite League was primarily seniors and the Elite II League was primarily juniors.

The Elite league in recent years has not been primarily seniors which is too bad. Most teams typically have more underclassmen then seniors. Many of the younger players that made rosters got there 'mysteriously' and caused people to cry foul over how the league is run. Of course, some extremely good players deserve an early chance to play on those teams but it should be the exception not the norm.

The Elite II league actually did set limits on the number of seniors so their teams were geared to be primarily sophomores and juniors. With the leagues working together now, hopefully they will come up with a way to allow more top seniors at the Elite level with some exceptional juniors and have the developmental Elite team be more juniors/sophomores and some exceptional 9th graders. I also hope they don't call it the "D" league. Call it the Junior Elite or Elite Prep team.

I know that the letters have gone out to let you know that you have a spot already, but not sure on the invited to try out side.

Just wondering if anyone knows who looked good on during Saturdays tryouts. What defense, forwards, and goalies made good impressions.

They must have taken the tryout rosters down after the tryouts were complete. The final rosters for league play have not been posted yet.

So by my count, 36 kids out of about 120 from the tryouts made it. 89 kids had spots because they played last year or did not have to try out.
