UND having name changed?
Heard rumors that the Sioux are having to change the name. Not exactly reliable sources but have heard it a number of times, so just wondering if anyone else heard or knew anything about this?

Re: UND having name changed?
What I've heard is that the NCAA is letting the university use the name if the Native Americans in the area approve it. I'm not 100% sure on this, but I've heard it from more than one person.anotherGRhockeyguy wrote:Heard rumors that the Sioux are having to change the name. Correct. UND doesn't own the Ralph; the Englstad family leases the facility to UND. In addition, it does state in their contract if UND changes the name or logo, UND can no longer use the arena as their home ice.EREmpireStrikesBack wrote:Not gonna happen. UND is also changing their school song to:
O Canada.
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love
in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts
we see thee rise,
The True North
Strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada,
We stand on guard
for thee.
God keep our land
glorious and free
O Canada
we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada
we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada.
O Canada!

glorious and free

we stand on guard for thee.

I propose we trade North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin and future considerations to Canada in exchange for Quebec.

This seems like it has been going on forever. From what I understand, there really is only just enough opposition to keep this fire burning. Most of the locals are proud to be recognized. Rumor has it tho that the Englsted family set aside enough money to destroy the Arena if the name gets changed. They would almost have to. If you have never been there, the place is plastered with the Indian head. Its on every seat, almost every wall, and much of the floors.

It would be a shame if they would demolish that building, but believe me they will if it happens...ggophs7 wrote:This seems like it has been going on forever. That would be a disaster. Such a great building.Indians forever wrote:It would be a shame if they would demolish that building, but believe me they will if it happens...ggophs7 wrote:This seems like it has been going on forever. Hey Judge I guess you didn't see the latest standings--that's UND hoisting another WCHA Champion banner up. But to a Gopher fan, I suppose that doesn't rank up there with hoisting the "DODGE CLASSIC banner" you must be so proud of. Think of it, you guys beat Rochester John Marshall and Shakopee to win it ( I know last year you lost to Rochester and tied Navy to lose it). Will you start the season next year hanging the banner? I love the fact that you are soooo jealous of UND and their winning tradition. Did you see how Holy Cross did last night, or were you too busy admiring your Don Lucia poster you have hanging on your ceiling?

2)I don't think that gopher fans are "soooo" jealous of UND and their winning history. Have you seen the gopher rink it is full of all of their own history.
3)At least there not playing Wiliston and Fargo Shanley
4)Upsets happen look at Bemidji State and Miami, quit living in the past
5) I was actually still admiring my poster of Haxstall flicking off the ref...classsyy

Dear Campus Community:
Thursday, May 14 [2009] the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education passed the following unanimous motion:
"Consistent with the terms and conditions of the October 26, 2007 Settlement Agreement entered into with the NCAA, the Board directs UND officials to retire the 'Sioux' nickname and logo, effective October 1, 2009. Full retirement of the nickname and logo shall be completed no later than August 1, 2010. In the event a new nickname and logo is adopted by UND, they shall not violate the NCAA policy regarding Native American nicknames, mascots and imagery.
UND is further directed to undertake actions consistent with the Settlement Agreement to protect its intellectual property rights in the 'Fighting Sioux' nickname and mark. UND is further directed to address the imagery at Ralph Engelstad Arena and other venues pursuant to the terms, conditions and timelines set forth in the Settlement Agreement.
This directive shall be suspended, if, prior to October 1, 2009 the following should happen:
1. The Standing Rock Sioux tribe and the Spirit Lake Sioux tribe give namesake approval consistent with the terms of the Settlement Agreement; and
2. The namesake approval be binding upon the tribes for a period not less than thirty (30) years."
[Blah, blah, blah…]
If an agreement is not reached with the Standing Rock Sioux and the Spirit Lake Sioux Tribes prior to Oct. 1, I will call on ALL members of the University community -- both on and off campus -- to work with me, administrators, faculty, staff and students, to create new traditions based on our continued and shared vision of academic and athletic excellence and success.
Sincerely,
Robert O. Kelley
President

Actually, there are only 2 NCAA teams I follow with Pride.
The Green and the Maroon/Gold.
The question is where do I sit when they meet?

I think the Sioux tribes should be proud such a great team is named after them. If they change the name they literally will have to tear down the ralph. They say the reason they chose to put so many logos in the arena is to make a name change less likely and more difficult to do.
