The truth will set you, LEE!!

Slappy's assessment of Brian Lee's "puppy paw" talent questioned by the NHL.....

Lee has earned his notoriety
By Russ Cohen | NHL.com correspondent
Jan. 26, 2006

When defenseman Brian Lee was drafted ninth overall in the 2005 Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators, it was a nice ending to a tumultuous couple weeks leading up to the event.

Lee was expected to be a first-round pick. The NHL's Central Scouting Service ranked him as the 16th best North American skater and then his rating fluctuated with some other services. After all was said and done, Lee was in the top ten and that started the next phase of his career.

In his first World Junior Championship in 2005, Lee was highly regarded by Team USA coach Scott Sandelin. Lee was playing for his Moorhead Minnesota high school team -- and eventually was named "Mr. Hockey" in his senior year -- at the time and the coach thought he would round out that team's defense because of his ability to move the puck up the ice.

"We have the ability to move the puck and we have mobility up front," said Sandelin, pointing to Lee's puck-moving ability.

Defenseman Brian Lee, who recently competed
in the World Junior Championship, should be
on the Senators blue line in a few years.

The USHL graduate was a solid player for the Lincoln Stars and has continued his well-rounded development with the University of North Dakota. Lee is one of the Fighting Sioux's leading scorers on a roster that includes Buffalo first-rounder Drew Stafford, Jonathan Toews (will be a top-five pick in this year's Entry Draft), and Team USA teammate T.J. Oshie. Lee is a "steady-as-she-goes" kind of player who makes players around him better.

In an important preliminary game against Finland in the 2006 WJC, Lee deflected in a goal to give Team USA a 3-2 lead in an eventual 6-5 win. Lee wasn't expected to score for this team and he came through in the clutch against a great goalie in Tuukka Rask. Team USA didn't medal this year, but Lee could play again in a third tourney like Ryan Suter of the Nashville Predators did last season for Team USA.

"We were one of they youngest teams in this tournament, so a lot of these guys will get another kick at it and to those guys I certainly hope they have an opportunity to win a medal next year," said 2006 Team USA coach Walt Kyle.

The former AP Minnesota High School player of the year can be a first or second pairing defenseman in the NHL in a few seasons.

Defenseman always take longer to mature in the NHL, so Lee has plenty of time to make his mark. Lee is on track to join the Senators in three seasons. He should finish out his college career, get his degree (which will be in business or medicine), and take another shot at winning a medal for his country before he sets his sights on Ottawa. When Lee gets there, he will be joining one of the best defensive teams in the NHL, so he will likely start at the bottom and work his way up.

There is always a place on the roster for smart players and Lee fits the bill. You will be hard pressed to find him out of position in a game and he has more offensive ability than the average defenseman.

At 6-foot-3, 190 pounds there is plenty of room for Lee to fill out. When Lee is on the ice, he is usually responsible for the opposing team's best offensive threat. Those kinds of defensemen aren't easy to find.

Senators GM John Muckler compared Lee to perennial All-Star Wade Redden on draft day and that's another flattering assessment of his talent.

The truth will send you Lee

Great article

My only question is if you think he will play college for all four years, or will he leave earlier. It sounds here like they want him to stay, but I remember when he got drafted they were thinking two or three years tops.

Its disturbing when men (or boys) french post on the Internet - really distrubing. In case you blowhards and post accumulators hadn't noticed, the top of this page says "Forum" and not "Chat."

hitting

Post by Mnhockeygod »

He can hit when needed, and if you've watched him play you know that. He plays smart hockey and that means not just skating around and looking for someone to layout. Does anyone want to answer my question from earlier, or just keep talking trash?

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ckeygod at: 1/28/06 1:21 am
