Football just put out their schedules last week,they start a week later than usual...MEA break plays the last week on a Wednesday. This year MEA is week 7 and the next Tuesday is week 8. This will kill athletic budgets! The MSHSL gets dumber by the quarter. The attendance in every school is far higher on a Friday than a Midweek game.

It's true, mid week games are not as well attended, but they need to have time to fit the playoffs in, for the classes 5A and down (6A is on it's own program with the set number of teams and how they roll into the playoffs).

At this point, I'm just hoping they can have a football season!

Years ago, things may have changed....I admit, I was an AD. Football attendance paid my entire athletic budget. Boys basketball was the only other sport to break even or make money. To lose a home football game to MEA Wednesday was a killer to our budget. On average on a Friday we could expect, after expenses, to pull in $6000-$10,000. A Wednesday would be $1500-2000.

They have always played Bemidji for as long as I have been in the Alex area. As for the two point games, it rotates through the CLC schedule. Last year it was Willmar and (??) for the Cardinals, this year River Lakes and Sauk Rapids.

Gotcha, thanks for the explanations. I assumed the CLC handled their schedule more like the Metro East, with stronger teams playing the weaker ones only once, but clearly I was incorrect. Assuming the season starts on time, the Cardinals should have two challenging nonconference contest right off the bat.

Budget concerns? I guess it depends on who they dropped and if they needed to travel. It is not cheap to travel and adding a home game helps the way Rapids draws. Finding someone to go to GR can’t be easy. Adding a home game with Superior gives Rapids 12 home games and 13 on the road, simple math says take that over 11 and 14. If it is a home and home series, it probably isn’t as good compared to Holy Family competition wise but budget wise makes sense.

As always, Mahtomedi’s schedule will one of the most challenging in Class A. While there won’t be a rematch of the epic state final, the games with Denfeld and Little Falls, two consensus preseason top 10 teams, should be entertaining. Unfortunately there is no regular season matchup with expected 4A challenger Gentry.

Of course Mahtomedi plays a tough schedule, they play in the Tradition Rich Metro East (TRME to us old timers). Best Conference in the state hands down....the SEC of high school hockey...they need a break in the non conference schedule.

There are some nice upgrades to the difficulty of the Hunters' schedule. In addition to new conference competitor Rapids, they swap out a few weaker opponents for two top ten Class A foes. There are still some softballs outside of conference/section action (that holiday tournament, woof), but Denfeld should be plenty battle tested come playoff time.
