Edina 2010's All-Decade Team

Post by Brodziak Fan Club »

Welp, this is what I did with my "Social Distancing Tuesday." Thank you to Karl for providing inspiration in the form of his Minnesota and Duluth East all-decade teams. Thank you to the Hockey Hub and minnesota-scores.net for their respective statistics archives. Karl mentioned he would love to see this done for other teams, and so would I!

off the top of my head, I might suggest you left off a couple that might be more deserving than some on the list:
Clayton Phillips
Marshall Everson
Ryan Zuhlsdorf
Zack Budish

Weren't Budish and Everson 2009 grads?

Budish and Everson graduated in 2009. Zuhlsdorf and Phillips both would likely have made the list if they had stayed in high school longer than one and two years, respectively. There were definitely some tough cuts, but ultimately this list is geared more toward impact on the program as a whole.

Good list. Thanks for doing that. Only person I could see being added is Dornbach. GB

He was definitely up for consideration. Looking back at his high school statistics, his point totals were lower than I remembered. I know it's not all about points. Casey was a leader and played a 200-foot game. Honorable mention for sure.

Good list. Only change I think I'd make is having Connor Girard over Willie Benjamin. That's totally just a nitpick though.

Interesting thing about Edina is when is the last time they've produced a goalie? Matt Bertram? Steve Carroll? Larry Thayer? We're going back 40-50 years at this point.

That defense.....my Lord!

What would be fun is to pick all decade teams from several of the AA and A teams and have a simulated playoff.
anybody have the skill to pull that off?

Any way, let's build all decade teams from these teams and see how they look :)

That is interesting about Edina's goalies. I was born in the late 80's so started following Edina hockey in the mid-90's. I remember thinking Jeff Hall was a super hero, but I was 8 years old. I don't remember how good he actually was.

I was thinking the same thing. I would be willing to create the tournament, but not sure I have the depth of knowledge on other programs to create their all-decade teams. Is anybody willing to make one for their program? It's a solid amount of work, but fun to dig back into old seasons.

Andrew Rohkohl was a bit underrated in net at Edina , filled in when Benjamin was hurt in 2012-13, then was in net all season for Edina’s 2013-14 championship season . Above 90% his whole career I think . Played some at Univ of St T

Hey, glad someone else went in on this. We'll have to find a free Friday night at the X to match these Hornets against my all-decade team Hounds. Hard to argue with that assemblage of talent.

BFC, I do have a very, very large spreadsheet where I try to track post-HS careers of players from prominent teams (basically, anyone I can get a roster for prior to the Hub, and most major programs since the Hub came to be). Having a few more free evenings than usual lately, I've started to make some updates for the first time in a couple years. It doesn't have stats and will of course miss a few good players who may have chosen to do other things with their lives post-HS, but it may be in shareable form in a week or so.

Otherwise, I hope some other people venture to do this. If the Hermantown thread is any indication, there are a few people out there with a lot of time on their hands these days...

I would add Mike Vacanti to your list: a 2-time state champ at Edina East played 30 games for the Gophers from 1982-84. But you're right, there haven't been many.

And Jeff Hall was a super hero.

Above average goalie, but turned into Jesus Christ for a brief period midway through the 2nd period against Hill Murray until 00.0 on the clock in the 3rd against Duluth East the next night....

Good call on Rohkol. I had forgotten about his fill-in stint for Benjamin.

I’m with Doc and think Girard probably get the nod for me over Benjamin.

I also think Benny Walker might deserve a spot on the list over Jordahl. Probably doesn’t have the points Jordahl did, but he didn’t benefit from playing with Hurley and Malmquist.

For what it's worth, Girard and Benjamin are pretty much equal in my mind. Looking at the numbers, Benjamin's are slightly better across the board. There's not much of a difference, so I can't fault anyone for giving the nod to Girard.

Willie Benjamin 37-11 2.25 0.906
Connor Girard 27-11-3 2.29 0.901

You make an interesting point on Benny Waker. I agree that he was the more talented player than Jordahl. When it came down to it, I favored players who stayed through their senior seasons, unless they made a major impact before they left.

Jordahl may not have been an obvious all-decade star but was the catalyst for Malmquist and Hurley. Giles moved him off the line after Christmas in 2013 and they tanked. Giles reversed the move before the playoffs and they instantly took off and played the way they had previously (and in 2012 as well). He'd definitely be on my team, although had a few of Edina's several early departures stayed (including Ben and Jack Walker) he may have been edged out. My list for Edina stars leaving early that decade include:

Matt Van Voorhis
Calvin Pugh
Ryan Zuhlsdorf
Clyton Phillips
Peter Tabor
Ben Brinkman
Ben Dexheimer
Louie Nanne
Ben Walker
Jack Walker
Conner Hurley
Kieffer Bellows
Garret Wait
Ben Copeland

Had that group had a goalie they would have been favorites to win state most years. Most of the top programs could produce a nice list as well and it'd be interesting to see how they stack up.

And T. J. Moore and Dan Labosky (and I think Chris Student) were Edina players who opted for Benilde after bantams, winning state in 2012 after beating Edina 3-2 on a final minute goal of the state quarterfinals.
